TRAIN YOUR SOUL TO FOLLOW YOUR SPIRIT

MEMORISE: “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind…” — Romans 12:2

I. THE GREAT INTELLECTUAL USURPER: THE SOUL IN REBELLION

When we study the writings of the Apostle Paul, we gain an understanding of how we relate to the Creator. In Romans 1:9, he makes a bold statement: “For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son…”

This clarifies where genuine, acceptable service to the Father originates. It does not begin in our physical bodies, nor does it begin in our soulish intellect; it is a function of our recreated human spirit.

However, we must address the other vital, highly complex dimension of our triune being: the human soul.

The soul is the seat of your mind, your will, and your emotions. It is the processor of your thoughts, the architect of your personal choices, and the reservoir of your feelings.

The great danger in the modern Christian walk is allowing the soul to usurp the authority of the spirit.

• Your mind was never designed to rule you.

• Your fleeting emotions were never designed to dictate your actions.

• Your independent human will was never designed to sit on the throne of your life.

When your soul is untrained, you will find yourself constantly tossed back and forth by sensory data, moods, and secular philosophies. To walk in the fullness of your inheritance in Christ, your mind, will, and emotions must be systematically brought under the direct influence of the Holy Spirit and trained to yield to your inner man.

II. THE HOLY PLACE: THE SACRED SCHOOLROOM OF THE SOUL

To fully grasp how the soul is to be managed, we must look at the spiritual blueprint of the Old Testament tabernacle. As we established, the three parts of the temple correspond directly to the three parts of the human being:

Physical Tabernacle (OT)   --->   Human Architecture (NT)
------------------------          -----------------------
1. The Outer Court         --->   The Physical Body
2. The Holy Place          --->   The Soulish Mind / Intellect
3. The Most Holy Place     --->   The Recreated Human Spirit

The outer court corresponds to our physical body, and the Holy of Holies represents our recreated spirit. The middle compartment—the Holy Place—corresponds perfectly to the human soul.

In the Old Testament temple, the Holy Place was the exclusive domain where the Levitical priests ministered daily. And what was the primary, non-negotiable responsibility of these priests? They were the custodians, guardians, and instructors of the Law. Their job was to teach the statutes of God to the nation.

This reveals a profound spiritual truth: Your soul must be taught.

Unlike your spirit, which was instantly recreated in perfect righteousness at the new birth, your soul did not change. It carries the residual programming of your old life and the world’s education. Therefore, your mind must be systematically trained with the Word of God. Your erratic emotions must be governed by the Word. Your stubborn human will must be disciplined by the Word.

There will be times in your walk with God when your soul screams, “This is what I want to do! This is the choice I have made based on my logic and my hurt feelings!” But when the light of the Word of God shines and reveals a different direction, your soul must yield.

You must train your soul to bow and say, “Not my will, but Your will; not my logic, but Your Word; not my way, but Your way.” That is the moment your soul is brought under the control of the spirit.

III. THE THREE FURNISHINGS: THE KINETIC ENGINE OF TRANSFORMATION

Inside the Holy Place stood three highly significant, holy furnishings: the Golden Candlestick, the Table of Showbread, and the Altar of Incense. Each of these represents a critical element in the training and maturity of your soul:

The Golden Candlestick (Divine Illumination): The Holy Place had no natural windows; its only source of light was the candlestick. This represents the illumination of the Word of God in your soul. As you study, the entrance of His words floods your mind with divine light, dispelling the darkness of ignorance and carnal thinking (Psalm 119:130).

The Table of Showbread (Divine Nourishment): This table held twelve loaves of holy bread, which the priests ate. This represents the Word of God as active nourishment for your life. You are not just analyzing the Bible intellectually; you are feeding on it, digesting it, and letting it become your spiritual sustenance.

The Altar of Incense (Intimate Communication): Positioned right before the veil, this altar produced a sweet, continuous cloud of fragrance that drifted upward. This represents prayer—your direct, unbroken communication with God.

Do you see the divine connection? As you study and meditate on the Word, the Golden Candlestick sheds light on your path, and the Table of Showbread nourishes your inner man.

As you are filled with the Word, your spirit is stirred to pray. Your prayers then ascend from the Altar of Incense as a sweet-smelling aroma before the throne of God.

These two twin forces—the Word and Prayer—are constantly working together to recalibrate your soul. The more you receive the Word, the more you are fueled to pray; and the more you pray, the more sensitive your mind becomes to the Word. This is how the soul is trained. By keeping it saturated in this environment, your thoughts, your choices, and your emotional responses naturally align with the perfect will of God.

IV. CHRISTIAN MATURITY: THE COHESIVE TRINITY OF MAN

True spiritual maturity is reached when your spirit takes the lead, your soul willingly follows, and your body obeys.

If you allow your emotions to govern you, you will pray only when you “feel” like praying, and you will walk in love only when people are nice to you. But when you train your soul to follow your spirit, you operate from a higher realm.

You do not pray because you feel inspired; you pray because your spirit is alive to God. You do not love because people deserve it; you love because the love of God is shed abroad in your heart.

Train your mind to think God’s thoughts. Train your will to desire His plans. Train your emotions to respond to His truth. This is how you live the triumphant, higher life in Christ Jesus, ruling your world from the spirit!

V. PRAYER

Dear Father, I thank You for the power of Your Holy Word that actively renews my mind, refines my soul, and disciplines my will. I declare today that I refuse to be ruled by my feelings, natural circumstances, or human philosophies. I surrender my intellect and my emotions to the lordship of Your Word. My mind is illuminated with divine light, my spirit is nourished with Your truth, and my life is in perfect alignment with Your glorious will. I walk in maturity, letting my spirit take the lead and my soul follow, in the matchless Name of Jesus. Amen.

VI. FURTHER STUDY SUMMARY

Psalm 119:130 (KJV): The Psalmist reveals that the entrance and assimilation of God’s words instantly bring spiritual light. It does not require worldly intellect; even the simple and unlearned receive profound spiritual understanding and wisdom through His Word.

James 1:21-22 (KJV): James instructs believers to cast off all moral filthiness and wickedness, and to receive with a gentle, teachable spirit the “engrafted” or implanted Word, which possesses the dynamic power to save and restore their souls. He warns that we must be active doers of this Word, and not passive listeners who end up deceiving themselves.

Hebrews 5:13-14 (KJV): The writer of Hebrews explains that anyone who feeds only on the basic, elementary doctrines (milk) is unskilled in the word of righteousness, operating like a spiritual baby. In contrast, solid food belongs to those who are mature—those who, through consistent practice and application of the Word, have trained their senses to clearly discern between good and evil.

VII. BIBLE IN ONE YEAR SUMMARY: ACTS 24:1-27 & PSALMS 1-6

Acts 24:1-27: Five days after Paul’s arrival in Caesarea, the High Priest Ananias and a professional orator named Tertullus present their formal accusations against Paul before Governor Felix, labeling him a public nuisance and a ringleader of the Nazarene sect. Paul masterfully defends himself, denying any charges of inciting riots but boldly confessing his faith in the Resurrection. Felix, who has a accurate knowledge of “the Way,” defers the judgment. Over the next two years, Felix and his wife Drusilla send for Paul often to listen to him speak about faith in Christ. However, when Paul speaks about righteousness, self-control, and the judgment to come, Felix becomes terrified and sends him away, keeping him in prison hoping for a bribe until he is succeeded by Porcius Festus.

Psalms 1-6:

• • Psalm 1: Contrasts the blessed man who meditates on God’s law day and night—comparing him to a fruitful tree planted by rivers of water—with the ungodly, who are like worthless chaff blown away by the wind.

  • Psalm 2: A prophetic, Messianic psalm depicting the foolishness of earthly kings conspiring against the Lord and His Anointed, declaring that God has established His King on Zion.

  • Psalm 3: David’s cry of deliverance while fleeing from his rebellious son Absalom, declaring that God is his shield and the lifter of his head.

  • Psalm 4: A prayer of distress and absolute trust in God, where David admonishes his enemies to search their hearts and sleep in peace.

  • Psalm 5: A morning prayer seeking God’s guidance and protection against boastful, deceitful workers of iniquity.

  • Psalm 6: A deeply penitent prayer of David during a time of severe physical and emotional distress, begging for God’s mercy and declaring that the Lord has heard his weeping.

VIII. BIBLE IN TWO YEAR SUMMARY: GALATIANS 4:21-31 & ISAIAH 36

Galatians 4:21-31: Paul uses an allegory based on Abraham’s two sons to contrast the Old and New Covenants. Ishmael, born of Hagar the slave woman, represents the earthly Jerusalem and the bondage of the Law. Isaac, born of Sarah the free woman according to the promise, represents the heavenly Jerusalem and the freedom of the Gospel. Paul commands the Galatians to cast out the slave woman and her son, asserting that New Creation believers are not children of the slave but of the free.

Isaiah 36: Sennacherib, the king of Assyria, launches an invasion of Judah and sends his military field commander, the Rabshakeh, to Jerusalem with a massive army. Standing by the aqueduct, the Rabshakeh delivers a highly manipulative, mocking speech to King Hezekiah’s representatives, shouting in the Hebrew language to terrify the citizens on the wall. He ridicules Judah’s alliance with Egypt, mocks their military weakness, and blasphemously claims that the Lord told him to destroy the land, warning the people not to trust Hezekiah’s promise of divine deliverance.

IX. PROPHETIC DECREE

I decree and declare that on this Thursday, July 16, 2026, every trace of emotional instability, mental confusion, and anxiety is permanently cast out of your soul by the authority of Jesus Christ! I command your mind to align perfectly with the thoughts of God, and your human will to submit joyfully to the leadership of the Holy Spirit.

You will not walk in frustration or depression!

Your soul is receiving divine illumination and strength from your spirit today.

As you go out, the light of God’s Word in your mind will guide your decisions, grant you supernatural wisdom, and make you a master over every situation you encounter. You are walking in absolute maturity, reigning in life, and expressing the beauty and excellence of Christ from the inside out, in His mighty and victorious Name! Amen! Hallelujah!
