DELIVERANCE FROM THE BURDEN OF DEBTS

MESSAGE BY: Pastor E. A. Adeboye

MEMORISE: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,” — Luke 4:18

I. THE SILENT PRISON: UNDERSTANDING THE SPIRITUAL SLAVERY OF DEBT

Among the many heavy loads that crush the spirit of a person, few are as agonizing, persistent, and humiliating as the burden of debt. Debt is not merely a financial statistic; it is a profound emotional and spiritual prison. It holds your peace of mind hostage, fills your nights with sleeplessness, and constantly whispers thoughts of limitation and shame into your ears.

The Word of God does not mince words when describing the true nature of financial liability. Proverbs 22:7 states: “The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.”

When you are heavily in debt, you lose a portion of your spiritual and physical freedom. You are no longer entirely your own master; you operate at the mercy, whims, and schedules of your creditors. The enemy knows this and loves to trap God’s children in cycles of borrowing to keep them in a perpetual state of psychological servitude and spiritual paralysis.

But I have good news for you: our Lord Jesus Christ is the ultimate Burden Bearer! His anointing is specifically designed to set the captives free, heal the brokenhearted, and deliver those who are heavily bruised by financial oppression (Luke 4:18). God does not want you to live your life under the dark shadow of debt. He wants you to breathe the fresh air of financial freedom.

II. THE SOUND OF LIBERTY: FROM THE UNCONSUMED BUSH TO A NEW SONG

To illustrate the emotional relief that comes with deliverance from debt, I often recall a highly touching story from our own household many years ago. We had a young housemaid who worked with us. Every single time we gathered as a family for morning or evening prayers and asked her to lead us in a song, she would enthusiastically sing:

“The fire is burning the bush, and the bush is not consumed. How great is our God!”

She sang this particular song with such intense passion and repetition that it eventually caught my attention. One afternoon, I called her aside and asked, “My daughter, what is this unconsumed bush that you are always singing about?”

With tears in her eyes, she opened up to me. She revealed that her parents had fallen into catastrophic financial distress. They were heavily in debt, hounded by creditors, and completely unable to pay their bills. Out of utter desperation and survival, she had been sent away to work as a housemaid just to help her family keep their heads above water. Her family was the “bush” that was constantly on fire, yet miraculously not completely destroyed.

Hearing her story, my heart was moved with deep compassion. We took immediate steps to verify and completely pay off the entirety of her family’s debt.

The transformation was nothing short of miraculous. The very next time we gathered for family prayers and asked her to choose a song, her old tune of the burning bush had vanished forever. With a beaming smile and a heart full of joy, she sang:

“He has done it for me. What my father cannot do, He has done it for me!”

The heavy weight of her family’s debt had been lifted, and her song of survival was instantly replaced with a song of supernatural deliverance. I decree over your life today: every burning bush of financial distress in your family is being quenched by the blood of Jesus, and God is putting a brand-new song of victory in your mouth!

III. THE MIRACLE OF THE EMPTY VESSELS: ANATOMY OF A FINANCIAL TURNAROUND

Our Bible reading today from 2 Kings 4:1-7 presents the classic, timeless strategy for divine debt cancellation. A certain woman, the widow of one of the sons of the prophets, cried out to the prophet Elisha in absolute despair. Her husband had been a dedicated, God-fearing man, but he died leaving behind a mountain of debt.

The ruthless creditors had run out of patience. They were coming to take her two young sons away to serve as lifelong slaves to offset the unpaid balance.

Consider her helplessness. She had lost her husband, she was facing extreme poverty, and now she was on the verge of losing her children to the cold hands of slavery. When Elisha asked her what she had in her house, she replied, “Thine handmaid hath not anything in the house, save a pot of oil.”

Elisha gave her a highly unusual, prophetic instruction:

1: Borrow Empty Vessels: Go to all your neighbors and borrow empty containers—borrow not a few.

2: Shut the Door: Go inside your house, shut the door upon yourself and your sons, and begin to pour the oil from your small jar into the empty vessels.

3: Sell and Live: Sell the oil, pay off your creditors completely, and live comfortably with your sons on the leftover profit.

She obeyed the instruction precisely. As she began to pour, the laws of physics and nature were suspended. The small pot of oil kept flowing and flowing, filling vessel after vessel until there were no empty containers left. Only then did the supernatural oil stop flowing.

By crying out to the Lord, her situation was completely reversed. She went from being a heavily indebted widow on the brink of losing her children to becoming an instant distributor of high-grade oil, completely debt-free and financially secure for the rest of her life.

IV. STEPPING INTO COVENANT WEALTH: THE PROTOCOL OF THE LENDER

Beloved, God’s perfect will is for you to be a major distributor of wealth, not a perpetual beggar or borrower. The only thing the New Testament permits you to owe anyone is a continuous debt of love (Romans 13:8).

If you are currently struggling under a heavy mountain of debt—whether it is credit card debt, business loans, mortgages, or personal IOUs—do not give up hope. Turn your eyes away from the threatening letters and look to the hills from whence comes your help!

Call upon the Lord today. Bring your financial ruins to His altar. He is able to make all grace abound toward you, ensuring you have absolute sufficiency in all things (2 Corinthians 9:8).

Furthermore, God wants to give you the supernatural power to get wealth (Deuteronomy 8:18). He wants to bless you so excessively that you will fulfill the prophecy of Deuteronomy 15:6, lending to many nations but never borrowing from any. Trust Him today, obey His instructions, pay your tithes, honor Him with your firstfruits, and watch the Burden Bearer wipe your slate completely clean!

V. PRAYER POINT

Father, I bring every single debt, financial liability, and material burden limiting my life to Your feet today. Please release Your supernatural oil of favor, cancel my debts miraculously, and make me a lender to nations, in the victorious Name of Jesus. Amen.

VI. BIBLE TEXT SUMMARY: 2 KINGS 4:1-7

The widow of a deceased son of the prophets cries out to Elisha, explaining that her husband has died in debt and the creditor is coming to take her two sons into slavery. Elisha asks what she has in her house, and she responds that she has nothing but a single pot of oil. Elisha commands her to borrow empty vessels from all her neighbors, shut the door behind her and her sons, and pour the oil into the vessels. She obeys, and the oil flows miraculously until every borrowed vessel is completely filled. Elisha then instructs her to sell the oil, pay her debts, and live with her children on the remaining abundance.

VII. BIBLE IN ONE YEAR SUMMARY: ISAIAH 4-8

Isaiah 4: Isaiah prophesies a time of cleansing for Zion, where the filth of the daughters of Jerusalem will be washed away. The “Branch of the Lord” will become beautiful and glorious, and God will create a protective canopy of cloud by day and smoke and fire by night over Mount Zion, serving as a shelter from the storm and rain.

Isaiah 5: The prophet shares the famous “Song of the Vineyard,” describing how God carefully cultivated Israel, expecting good grapes but receiving only wild, bitter ones. Consequently, God declares He will remove its protective hedge and let it go to waste. Isaiah then pronounces a series of six solemn woes against those who hoard land, indulge in drunkenness, call evil good and good evil, and pervert justice for bribes.

Isaiah 6: In the year King Uzziah died, Isaiah receives a majestic, life-altering vision of the Lord sitting high and lifted up upon His throne, His train filling the temple while seraphim cry, “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts.” Overwhelmed by his own uncleanness, Isaiah is cleansed when a seraph touches his lips with a live coal from the altar. When the Lord asks, “Whom shall I send?” Isaiah boldly answers, “Here am I; send me.” He is then commissioned to preach to a spiritually blind and deaf people until the land is completely desolate.

Isaiah 7: During the reign of King Ahaz, Syria and Israel ally together against Judah, causing the king’s heart to tremble. God sends Isaiah to assure Ahaz that the alliance will fail. When Ahaz refuses to ask for a sign, God gives a monumental prophetic sign Himself: “Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.” Despite this promise of deliverance, Isaiah warns that because of unbelief, the king of Assyria will bring devastating judgment upon the land.

Isaiah 8: Isaiah is instructed to write a prophecy regarding the swift defeat of Judah’s enemies by Assyria. He warns the people not to fear the conspiracies of men, but to sanctify the Lord of hosts and make Him their only fear. Isaiah admonishes the nation against consulting mediums and wizards, urging them to return to the law and the testimony, warning that those who do not speak according to this word will walk in darkness and hunger.

VIII. HYMN 29: WHEN PEACE LIKE A RIVER ATTENDETH

1. When peace like a river, attendeth my way,

When sorrows like sea billows roll;

Whatever my lot,

Thou hast taught me to say,

“It is well, It is well with my soul.”

It is well with my soul;

It is well, It is well with my soul.

2. Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,

Let this blest assurance control:

 

That Christ has regarded my helpless estate,

 

And has shed His own blood for my soul.

 

3. My sin—oh, the bliss of this glorious thought!

 

My sin, not in part, but the whole,

 

Is nailed to the Cross, and I bear it no more;

 

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!

 

4. O Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight,

 

The clouds be rolled back as a scroll,

 

The trump shall resound and the Lord shall descend;

 

Even so, it is well with my soul.

IX. PROPHETIC DECREE

I decree and declare that on this Thursday, July 16, 2026, the supernatural power of the Holy Ghost shatters every yoke of debt, poverty, and financial embarrassment operating in your life! I command the spirit of constant borrowing and financial lack to pack its load and depart from your family forever!

I decree that according to the covenant of God, your empty vessels are being filled with supernatural oil right now.

Every legal hold, harassing creditor, and systemic trap designed to lock you in financial slavery is neutralized by the blood of Jesus!

You are stepping out of the debtor’s prison into the lender’s palace. You shall lend to nations, you shall build estates, you shall sponsor the gospel of Jesus Christ globally, and you will walk in absolute, unhindered financial peace all the days of your life, in the all-powerful and matchless Name of Jesus Christ! Amen! Hallelujah!
