RIGHTEOUSNESS BY FAITH

MESSAGE BY Pastor Chris Oyakhilome DSc DSc DD

MEMORISE: “For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith”Romans 1:17

I. THE NEW CURRENCY OF THE KINGDOM: BEYOND HUMAN MERIT

Building upon our foundational understanding that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is the raw, dynamic power of God unto salvation, we must now explore the central engine that drives this message: Righteousness by Faith.

Religion has conditioned human minds to believe that acceptance before God is a prize earned at the end of a long, exhausting ladder of human merit. Natural man assumes that if he prays long enough, fasts hard enough, obeys enough laws, or lives a moral lifestyle, God will eventually sign a decree accepting him.

However, the Kingdom of God operates on an entirely different economy.

God does not deal with human beings on the basis of their religious qualifications or moral performances; He deals with humanity strictly on the basis of faith.

Through the Gospel, God announces that through the substitutionary sacrifice of Jesus Christ, you have been legally justified, declared righteous, acquitted of all guilt, and brought into complete oneness with Himself.

The Gospel does not tell you what you ought to do to reach God; it reveals what God has already done, who you have become, and what now belongs to you in Christ. When this revelation dawns on your human spirit, it produces an unshakeable, active faith. You suddenly realize that you are not trying to qualify for God’s presence—you have been qualified by the blood of the Lamb!

II. THE RADICAL CASE OF RAHAB: FAITH THAT REWRITES DESTINY

To understand how radically God honors faith over human pedigree, we need only turn to the great “Hall of Faith” recorded in Hebrews 11.

The chapter lists the undisputed patriarchs of faith: Abel who offered a excellent sacrifice, Enoch who walked with God, Noah who built the ark, and Abraham who obeyed the divine call. These were giant figures of faith.

Yet, right in the middle of this honored list of spiritual champions, the Holy Spirit inserts a mind-blowing statement in Hebrews 11:31:

“By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace.”

Consider that for a moment! The Bible does not gloss over her past; it explicitly labels her as Rahab the harlot. By human and religious standards, she was disqualified. She was a Gentile living in the pagan, condemned city of Jericho, practicing a profession that society held in contempt.

Why is she immortalized in the Scriptures alongside Abraham and Moses? Because she believed!

When the Israelite spies entered Jericho (Joshua 2:1-22), Rahab had heard reports of how the God of Israel dried up the Red Sea and conquered mighty kings. While the rest of Jericho melted in fear, Rahab made a deliberate, faith-filled choice. She believed in the absolute victory of Jehovah before the walls ever fell. She protected His representatives and aligned her spirit with the God of Israel.

That single act of faith instantly erased her past! She was saved from the destruction of Jericho, integrated into the holy nation of Israel, married a prince of Judah named Salmon, and entered the direct genealogical lineage of King David and our Lord Jesus Christ (Matthew 1:5)!

This is the transforming power of righteousness by faith. The moment this righteousness is imparted to your spirit, your past history loses its power over you. You are no longer defined by your family background, your past mistakes, or your societal labels; you are defined exclusively by what you have received in Christ!

III. THE LEGAL AND VITAL IMPARTATION: FROM CONDEMNATION TO CONFIDENCE

In his masterwork to the Romans, the Apostle Paul systematically lays out the spiritual mechanics of this truth. He demonstrates two profound dimensions of righteousness:

1: The Legal Dimension: How God, acting as the Supreme Sovereign Judge, legally declared humanity acquitted and right with Himself through the payment made by Christ on the Cross.

2: The Vital Dimension: How that legal decree becomes an actual, living reality imparted directly into your human spirit the moment you believe the Gospel.

Righteousness is not a badge of good conduct that you wear on the outside; it is a spiritual nature—a divine gift—implanted in your inner man.

As Romans 5:17 declares: “…they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.”

Notice that righteousness is explicitly defined as a gift. You do not work for a gift; you simply open your hands and receive it!

When you embrace this truth, the plague of spiritual inferiority and guilt is permanently destroyed. You no longer approach God’s presence as a trembling, dirty beggar hoping for a few crumbs of mercy. You step into the throne room of grace with holy boldness, knowing that you belong there, standing complete in Christ without any sense of sin, fear, or spiritual weakness!

IV. ABANDONING RELIGIOUS WORKS: THE PHILIPPIAN CONFESSION

To walk in the reality of righteousness by faith, you must make the same radical mental shift that Paul made.

In Philippians 3:8-9, Paul reflects on his impressive religious credentials—his pedigree, his Pharisaic training, his flawless adherence to the Mosaic law. Yet, he writes:

“Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord… and be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith.”

Paul threw away his legalistic self-righteousness, calling it rubbish, so that he could possess the authentic righteousness of God.

Stop measuring your right standing with God by your daily performance, your feelings, or human opinion. Live every day with the calm, joyful assurance that you are fully accepted, completely justified, and firmly established in God’s love.

Your confidence is not rooted in what you did or did not do; it is rooted in who Jesus is and what He accomplished for you. Embrace His gift of righteousness today, walk in its consciousness, and exercise your kingdom authority over every circumstance!

V. PRAYER

Dear Heavenly Father, I thank You from the depth of my spirit for the glorious gift of righteousness revealed in the Gospel of Christ. I rejoice knowing that I have been brought into Your Kingdom, accepted, and justified entirely by faith, and not by my own human works. I cast away every sense of guilt, spiritual weakness, and condemnation. I walk today in absolute boldness, fully assured of my right standing with You, and exercising my legal authority in Christ over sickness, poverty, and every circumstance, in the matchless Name of Jesus. Amen.

VI. FURTHER STUDY SUMMARY

Romans 3:21-22 (KJV): Paul announces that God’s righteousness has now been revealed completely separate from the Mosaic Law, though both the Law and the Prophets pointed toward it. This divine righteousness is imparted directly through faith in Jesus Christ to every person who believes, eliminating all human distinctions and categories.

Romans 5:17 (KJV): The Apostle contrasts the devastating reign of spiritual death caused by Adam’s single transgression with the overwhelming victory given to believers. Those who receive God’s abundant grace and His free gift of righteousness are empowered to reign as kings in this life through Jesus Christ.

Ephesians 2:8-9 (KJV): Paul reinforces that salvation is an act of pure grace received through faith, originating entirely from God and not from human initiative. He stresses that salvation is a gift, completely independent of human works, ensuring that no individual can ever boast of earning their redemption.

VII. BIBLE IN ONE YEAR SUMMARY: ACTS 27:1–26 & PSALMS 21–22

Acts 27:1–26: Paul, along with other prisoners, is handed over to a Roman centurion named Julius to be transported by ship to Italy. After changing ships at Myra, they encounter terrible, opposing winds and reach a port called Fair Havens on the island of Crete. Despite Paul’s urgent prophetic warning that continuing the voyage will result in disastrous loss of ship, cargo, and life, the centurion listens to the pilot and owner instead. Shortly after setting sail, a violent hurricane-force wind called Euroclydon strikes the ship, driving it helplessly before the storm. After days of darkness, surging waves, and discarding cargo without seeing sun or stars, the crew gives up all hope of survival. However, Paul stands up among them and brings courage, sharing that an angel of God appeared to him overnight, assuring him that he will stand before Caesar and promising that God has graciously granted the lives of everyone on board. Paul urges them to keep up their courage, declaring his absolute faith that it will happen exactly as God told him.

Psalms 21–22:

  • Psalm 21: A royal song of thanksgiving celebrating how the Lord has answered the king’s heart desire, crowning him with pure gold, granting him length of days, and establishing his throne through divine mercy and victorious power.

  • Psalm 22: A profound, Messianic psalm depicting the agonizing suffering and ultimate triumph of Christ on the cross. It opens with the prophetic cry, “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” and describes extreme physical torment—mocking crowds, pierced hands and feet, divided garments, and cast lots. The psalm shifts halfway into a glorious song of victory, declaring that the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord, and future generations will proclaim His righteousness.

VIII. BIBLE IN TWO YEAR SUMMARY: GALATIANS 6:10–18 & ISAIAH 41

Galatians 6:10–18: Paul concludes his epistle with practical exhortations, commanding believers to do good to everyone as opportunity arises, especially to those in the household of faith. Writing in large letters with his own hand, he exposes the false teachers who are pushing circumcision simply to make a good physical showing and avoid persecution for the cross of Christ. Paul boldly declares that he will boast in nothing except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to him and he to the world. He affirms that neither circumcision nor uncircumcision matters; the only thing that counts is the New Creation. He asks that no one cause him further trouble, for he bears on his physical body the brand-marks of Jesus.

Isaiah 41: God summons the nations to a courtroom setting, challenging them to consider who raised up the righteous conqueror from the East. While idol-makers panic and try to strengthen their wooden gods, God speaks words of tender comfort to His chosen servant Israel, telling them not to fear, for He is their God who will strengthen, help, and uphold them with His righteous right hand. He promises that those who rage against Israel will be brought to nothing, and promises to turn barren, parched wildernesses into pools of water and lush forests, so that all may see that the hand of the Lord has performed this miracle.

IX. PROPHETIC DECREE

I decree and declare that on this Tuesday, July 21, 2026, every lying whisper of religious condemnation, guilt, and spiritual inferiority trying to weaken your faith is permanently silenced by the blood of the Lamb! I command the revelation of your righteous identity in Christ to burn like a blazing fire in your inner man!

You will no longer measure your worth by past mistakes or human limitations!

Like Rahab, your faith in God has completely rewritten your history and opened the floodgates of divine favor upon your life.

I decree that because you possess the free gift of righteousness, you step out today as a king in this life. Sickness has no legal right to dwell in your body, poverty cannot settle in your home, and failure cannot attach itself to your hands. You are accepted, you are justified, you are established in God’s presence, and you are walking in continuous triumph, in the all-conquering Name of Jesus Christ! Amen! Hallelujah!
