OPEN HEAVENS DAILY DEVOTIONAL
PRAY FOR YOUR CHILDREN
MESSAGE BY: Pastor E. A. Adeboye
MEMORISE: ” As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth.” — Psalm 127:4
I. THE POWER OF PARENTAL ADVOCACY
Welcome to
Sunday, August 23, 2026. Scripture paints a striking picture of children in
Psalm 127:4, describing them as arrows in the hands of a warrior. An arrow does not launch itself; its velocity, direction, distance, and precision depend entirely on the strength, posture, and focus of the one holding the bow. As a parent, you hold divine authority over your children’s
spiritual and physical destinies.
In 1 Kings 1:1–49, a major political and family crisis broke out in Israel. King David was advanced in years, and his ambitious son, Adonijah, staged a coup to usurp the throne. Adonijah slaughtered oxen, won over Joab (the army captain) and Abiathar (the priest), and declared himself king without David’s knowledge or approval.
Solomon was the divinely chosen successor, yet he seemed completely unaware of the conspiracy unfolding in the capital. Had things remained that way, Solomon and his mother would have been executed as political rivals.
Then, Bathsheba stepped into action:
She Confronted the Crisis: Bathsheba went straight into the king’s chamber, bowed low, and reminded David of his sworn oath under God that Solomon would sit on the throne.
She Enlisted Spiritual Alignment: Partnering with Nathan the prophet, she brought divine order back to the kingdom.
She Secured Immediate Action: That very day, David commanded that Solomon be anointed at Gihon, mounted on the royal mule, and proclaimed king across Israel!
Solomon did not have to fight Adonijah’s army; his mother fought the battle for him through timely intervention and advocacy before the king.
II. THE MOTHER HEN VS. THE HAWK: WHY PARENTS MUST CRY OUT
There are positions, open doors, and spiritual elevations your children will miss entirely if you sit back in passivity. A young child or teenager often lacks the spiritual maturity, discernment, or wisdom to navigate the subtle traps laid by the enemy.
Pastor Adeboye illustrates this spiritual truth with a powerful analogy:
“Any parent who does not pray for his or her child is like a mother hen who watches as a hawk carries her chick away, leaving the chick to fight for itself. The chick lacks sufficient strength to fight a hawk; however, if its mother joins in the fight, it would have a better chance of being saved.”
The dark forces of this world—peer pressure, immorality, demonic distractions, bad company, and spiritual coups—are like hawks hunting for vulnerable chicks. If you remain silent, the enemy will tamper with their potential, abort their assignments, and pollute their minds.
You must refuse to keep quiet!
Cry out to God to satisfy your children early with His mercy:
“O satisfy us early with thy mercy; that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.” — Psalm 90:14
When
God satisfies your children early with mercy, they bypass the painful years of trial and error, frustration, and wasted time that many people only overcome in adulthood. Divine favor, protection, and wisdom locate them in their youth!
III. EXERCISING YOUR SPIRITUAL AND NATURAL AUTHORITY
God has invested tremendous spiritual authority in parents. The words you speak over your children, the prayers you send to heaven on their behalf, and the spiritual hedges you build around them hold binding weight in the realm of the Spirit.
Never allow the devil to write the script for your household.
Establish Their Identity: Continually declare that your children are for
signs and wonders (
Isaiah 8:18).
Break Demonic Entanglements: Intercede whenever you sense strange habits, rebellion, or ungodly influences creeping into their lives.
Command Royal Elevation: Pray them into their God-given thrones of influence, excellence, and kingdom impact, just as Bathsheba secured Solomon’s royal seat.
Take up your mantle today as a spiritual warrior. Stand in the gap, demand early mercy, and shield your arrows until they hit their target in God’s kingdom!
IV. TWELVE POWERFUL PRAYER POINTS FOR YOUR CHILDREN
1: Thanksgiving for the Gift of Children: Father, I
thank You for giving me precious children; I acknowledge that they are Your heritage and rewards committed to my care.
2: Early Mercy and Salvation: Lord, satisfy my children early with Your mercy! Let them come to know, love, and serve
Jesus Christ from their youth, in Jesus’ Name.
3: Frustrating Satanic Coups: Every spiritual coup or evil agenda designed to usurp my children’s
divine destiny and birthright, be scattered by fire!
4: Delivering Arrows from Hawks: Father, rescue my children from every satanic hawk—evil companions, bad influences, addictions, and worldly temptations, in
Jesus’ Name.
5: Anointing for Wisdom and Excellence: Lord, endow my children with the extraordinary wisdom of Solomon; let them excel in their academics, skills, and talents!

godly Nathans—godly mentors, teachers, and spiritual guardians—into my children’s lives to guide them in Your ways.
8: Breaking Generational Curses: Every negative family pattern, ancestral curse, or generational limitation ends in my generation; my children shall walk in freedom!
9: Positioning for Early Favor: Lord, let supernatural favor align my children with life-changing opportunities, scholarships, and royal positions early in life.
10: Preserving Mental Purity: Father, protect the minds of my children from demonic media, ungodly ideologies, and false doctrines sweeping through this generation.
12: Parental Wisdom and Strength: Father, grant me the spiritual alertness, patience, and financial grace needed to raise my children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
V. BIBLE TEXT SUMMARY & FURTHER STUDY
Scripture Reading Summary: 1 Kings 1:15–31
Bathsheba enters the chamber of the aging King David, bowing respectfully to address him. She informs him that his son Adonijah has usurped the throne, sacrificing animals and feasting with Abiathar the priest, Joab the army captain, and all the royal sons except Solomon. She reminds David of his oath before God that Solomon would reign after him, warning that if the king dies without resolving this, she and Solomon will be treated as traitors. Nathan the prophet enters to confirm her account. King David responds decisively, swearing by the Lord who redeemed his soul that Solomon will be anointed and crowned king on his
throne that very day.

VI. BIBLE READING PLAN
1-Year Bible Reading Plan
Lamentations 3–5
Lamentations 3: Jeremiah expresses profound personal grief over Jerusalem’s affliction, describing his suffering with vivid imagery. Yet, midway through his lament, he pivots to radiant hope:
“It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” He calls the people to examine their ways, return to the Lord, and trust in His ultimate deliverance.
Lamentations 4: Contrasts the former glory of Jerusalem with its horrific condition during the Babylonian siege. The precious sons of Zion, once valued like fine gold, are treated like clay pots. Princes and children starve in the streets as judgment falls due to the sins of her prophets and priests. The chapter ends with a declaration that Zion’s punishment will end, while Edom will face
divine judgment.
Lamentations 5: A collective prayer for mercy and restoration. The remnants of Israel recount their reproach: their inheritance turned to strangers, their mothers widowed, and their labor rewarded with oppression. The prophet concludes with an urgent plea: “Turn thou us unto thee, O LORD, and we shall be turned; renew our days as of old.”
VII. HYMN 28: GUIDE ME, O THOU GREAT JEHOVAH
Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah,
Pilgrim through this barren land.
I am weak, but Thou art mighty;
Bread of heaven, Bread of heaven!
Feed me now and evermore;
Bread of heaven, Bread of heaven!
Feed me now and evermore.
Open now the crystal fountain,
Whence the healing stream doth flow;
Let the fiery, cloudy pillar
Lead me all my journey through.
Strong Deliverer! Strong Deliverer!
Be Thou still my Strength and Shield.
Strong Deliverer! Strong Deliverer!
Be Thou still my Strength and Shield.
If I tread the verge of Jordan,
Bid my anxious fears subside;
Bear me through the swelling torrent,
Land me safe on Canaan’s side:
Songs of praises! Songs of praises!
I will ever give to Thee.
Songs of praises! Songs of praises!
I will ever give to Thee.
Savior, come! We long to see Thee,
Long to dwell with Thee above;
And to know in full communion,
All the sweetness of Thy love.
Take Thy waiting people home.
Come, Lord Jesus! Come, Lord Jesus!
Take Thy waiting people home.
