OPEN HEAVENS DAILY DEVOTIONAL
FEAR GOD I
MESSAGE BY: Pastor E. A. Adeboye
MEMORISE: ” But the Lord your God ye shall fear; and he shall deliver you out of the hand of all your enemies.” — 2 Kings 17:39
I. THE WISDOM OF REVERENCING THE CONSUMING FIRE
Welcome to Tuesday, August 25, 2026. Holy Scripture makes an absolute, uncompromising declaration in Psalm 111:10: “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom.” By direct logical necessity, anyone who refuses to fear God is operating in foolishness.
Our God is described in
Hebrews 12:29 as a
“consuming fire.” Even a wild, untrained animal recognizes the inherent danger of fire and stays away from it; how much more should a rational human being revere the Almighty
God who holds the power over life, death, and eternity? Fearing God is not about cowering in terror; it is possessing a deep, holy awe of His majesty, righteousness, and authority, which produces
a life of obedience.
When a person chooses to walk in the fear of the Lord, divine wisdom enters their heart. They begin to see
life through God’s perspective, make choices that align with His holy will, and avoid the devastating traps of sin and compromise.
II. THE MULTI-GENERATIONAL BENEFITS OF HOLY FEAR
Apart from bestowing wisdom, walking in the fear of
God activates a wide array of supernatural blessings. In
Psalm 112:1–9, the
Holy Spirit outlines the incredible advantages guaranteed to the reverent believer:
Mighty Descendants: “His seed shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the upright shall be blessed.” (
Psalm 112:2). Your holy fear
opens divine doors of prominence, influence, and authority for your children and grandchildren.
Generational Wealth and Riches: “Wealth and riches shall be in his house: and his righteousness endureth for ever.” (
Psalm 112:3).
God trusts those who fear Him with earthly resources, knowing they will steward them righteously.
Invincible Peace and Protection: “He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD.” (Psalm 112:7). While the world trembles at bad news, economic instability, or rumors of war, the reverent believer stands immovable because their trust is anchored in the Creator.
As stated in today’s memorise verse,
2 Kings 17:39, when you cultivate the fear of the Lord, He takes it upon Himself to
fight your battles and deliver you out of the hands of all your enemies!
III. THE TRAGIC COST OF LACKING THE FEAR OF GOD
Conversely, a lack of holy fear makes it easy for a person to commit deliberate sin, inviting severe consequences that can haunt their lineage for generations.
1. Gehazi: Trading Generational Destiny for Material Greed
In
2 Kings 5:20–27, Gehazi, the servant of Elisha, witnessed miraculous healings and
divine power firsthand. Yet, when Naaman was healed of leprosy, Gehazi lacked the fear of God. Driven by covert greed, he ran after Naaman, lied in the name of his master, and collected silver and garments.
Elisha confronted him in the spirit, pronouncing a terrible curse:
“The leprosy therefore of Naaman shall cleave unto thee, and unto thy seed for ever.” — 2 Kings 5:27
Gehazi’s lack of fear did not just ruin his own ministry—it sentenced his unborn children and future generations to carry a painful, contagious disease!
2. Joab: Cold-Blooded Murder and Family Curses
In 2 Samuel 3:27–29, Joab, the commander of David’s army, deceitfully led Abner aside under the guise of speaking peacefully with him, only to stab him to death in cold blood to avenge his brother Asahel.
When King David learned of this treachery, he declared that his kingdom was guiltless, but pronounced a severe, multi-generational judgment on Joab’s family:
“Let it rest on the head of Joab, and on all his father’s house; and let there not fail from the house of Joab one that hath an issue, or that is a leper, or that leaneth on a staff, or that falleth on the sword, or that lacketh bread.” — 2 Samuel 3:29
Joab’s disregard for God’s law purchased poverty, chronic illness, physical disability, and premature death for his descendants!
IV. SECURING A GLORIOUS TOMORROW
Whenever an individual acts in a manner that disregards
God’s holy standards, they rob their children of the opportunity for greatness and expose them to generational curses.
Pastor Adeboye shares his personal conviction:
“Beloved, if you want your future and that of your children to be glorious, you need to have the fear of God in you. If you’re going to have peace of mind in your old age, you must fear God. The reason I am sure that my tomorrow and those of my children will be alright is that I fear the Lord. I pray that your life and those of your descendants will be filled with blessings and not curses, in Jesus’ name.”
Your reverence for
God today is a spiritual insurance policy over your family’s future. When you honor God in secret and in public, you
build an enduring legacy of righteousness that releases blessings long after you are gone!
V. TWELVE POWERFUL PRAYER POINTS
1: Thanksgiving for Divine Majesty: Heavenly Father, I worship You because You are the Great and Awesome God, the Consuming Fire who reigns in holiness across the heavens and the earth.
2: Repentance for Casual Living: Lord, forgive me for every instance where I have treated Your presence, Your Word, or Your commandments with levity or carelessness.
3: Impartation of Holy Fear: Father, deposit a deep, reverent fear of Your holy Name within my heart, that I may depart from sin and delight in Your commandments.
4: Deliverance from Covert Greed: Lord, deliver me from the spirit of Gehazi; root out every form of secret greed, dishonesty, and material obsession from my spirit!
4: Cleanse My Hands from Deceit: Deliver me from the error of Joab; cleanse my heart from malice, bitterness, and cold-blooded wickedness, in Jesus’ Name.
5: Releasing Generational Blessings: Heavenly Father, let my holy fear of You open doors of power, influence, and prominence for my children and descendants!
5: Inheritance of Wealth and Riches: Lord, as I walk uprightly before You, fulfill Psalm 112 in my household; grant us righteous wealth to advance Your Kingdom on earth.
6: Immunity from Bad News: I decree that my heart is fixed, trusting in the Lord; I shall not be terrified by evil tidings, economic hardship, or demonic threats!
7: Total Deliverance from Enemies: According to 2 Kings 17:39, as I fear the Lord, deliver me and my family out of the hands of all visible and invisible enemies.
8: Canceling Ancestral Curses: Every curse of leprosy, poverty, weakness, or premature death operating in my
family tree, be shattered by the blood of Jesus!
9: Securing Peaceful Old Age: Lord, let my fear of You guarantee peace of mind,
divine health, and fruitfulness for me in my old age, in Jesus’ Name.
10: Personal Requests for Covenant Favor: [Present your specific family, career, and spiritual needs to God, trusting His promise to bless those who fear Him.]

VII. BIBLE READING PLAN
1-Year Bible Reading Plan
Ezekiel 5–8
Ezekiel 5: God instructs Ezekiel to shave his head and beard with a sharp sword, dividing the hair into three parts: one-third burned in the city, one-third struck with the sword, and one-third scattered in the wind. This acts as a prophetic sign of the three judgments coming upon Jerusalem—famine, sword, and exile—because she rebelled against
God’s laws more than the surrounding pagan nations.
Ezekiel 6: A prophecy directed against the mountains, hills, ravines, and valleys of Israel. God vows to bring a sword upon their idolatrous high
places, destroy their incense altars, and scatter their bones around their idols. A remnant will escape into exile, remembering God and loathing themselves for their abominations.
Ezekiel 8: Ezekiel is transported in a vision to the temple in Jerusalem. He witnesses appalling abominations hidden in the sanctuary: the idol of jealousy at the entrance, elders burning incense to carved images of crawling things, women weeping for the pagan god Tammuz, and twenty-five men turning their backs on
God’s altar to worship the rising sun.
VIII. HYMN 7: I AM THINE, O LORD
I am Thine, O Lord, I have heard Thy voice,
And it told Thy love to me;
But I long to rise in the arms of faith,
And be closer drawn to Thee.
Draw me nearer, nearer, blessed Lord,
To the cross where Thou hast died;
Draw me nearer, nearer, blessed Lord,
To Thy precious, bleeding side.
Consecrate me now to Thy service, Lord,
By the power of grace divine;
Let my soul look up with a steadfast hope,
And my will be lost in Thine.
O, the pure delight of a single hour
That before Thy throne I spend,
When I kneel in prayer, and with Thee, my God,
I commune as friend with friend!
There are depths of love that I cannot know
Till I cross the narrow sea;
There are heights of joy that I may not reach
Till I rest in peace with Thee.
IX. PROPHETIC DECREE
Because you choose to fear the Lord and delight in His commandments, your seed shall be mighty upon the earth, and wealth and riches shall fill your house!
You shall not be afraid of evil tidings; God will deliver you out of the hands of all your enemies, shatter every generational curse over your family, and establish your future in righteousness, in the mighty Name of Jesus Christ! Amen! Hallelujah!
