OPEN HEAVENS DAILY DEVOTIONAL
 DELIVERANCE FROM PHYSICAL BURDENS
MESSAGE BY: Pastor E. A. Adeboye
MEMORISE: “And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.” — Matthew 9:35
I. THE WAY TO GOLGOTHA: CO-OPTING A BURDEN BEARER
In the trial and subsequent execution of our Lord Jesus Christ, we witness a highly moving, painful scene along the dusty, hostile streets of Jerusalem. As recorded in the Gospel of John, after being subjected to brutal scourgings, Roman soldiers placed a massive, rough-hewn wooden cross upon Jesus’ raw, bleeding shoulders and forced Him toward Golgotha. He was physically depleted, dehydrated, and weak from a night of torture.
Yet, the cruel Roman regime showed no mercy; they demanded that He carry this heavy instrument of death entirely by Himself.
As He stumbled under the weight, the sovereign hand of God quietly intervened. The Roman soldiers encountered a traveler from North Africa—Simon of Cyrene—and compelled him to carry the cross behind Jesus. This historical encounter presents a powerful spiritual truth: Simon became a physical burden bearer. He stepped into a moment of crisis to lift a crushing weight off another.
If a mere mortal could be positioned by God to assist the Savior in His hour of physical exhaustion, how much more is the Savior Himself ready to step into your life today as your ultimate, supernatural Burden Bearer?
II. IDENTIFYING THE WEIGHTS: THE ANATOMY OF PHYSICAL INFIRMITIES
Life in this fallen world presents various categories of heavy loads. While some carry emotional trauma or financial debt, others are weighed down by crushing physical burdens. A physical burden is any bodily limitation, sickness, deformity, or chronic disease that saps your vital energy, restricts your movement, and attempts to dictate your daily lifestyle.
Throughout the Scriptures, we find clear examples of individuals who carried highly visible, agonizing physical burdens:
Naaman the Syrian Commander (2 Kings 5:1): He was highly respected, wealthy, and powerful, yet his entire life was overshadowed by a horrific physical burden—leprosy. No amount of money or military victory could wash away the agonizing reality of his decaying flesh.
The Bent-Double Woman (Luke 13:10-17): For eighteen long years, this daughter of Abraham was bound by a spirit of infirmity. Her physical spine was structurally bent double, leaving her completely unable to look up at the sky or stand straight. Her posture was a daily, public testament to her captivity.
The Invalid at Bethesda (John 5:2-9): For thirty-eight agonizing years, this man lay paralyzed by a pool. His physical body was completely useless, and over time, his family and friends abandoned him to the elements. He was trapped in a perpetual state of helplessness.
The Man with the Withered Hand (Mark 3:1-6): He possessed a dead, shriveled, and useless hand. He was severely restricted in his labor, unable to work or provide with his full physical capacity.
Each of these individuals faced challenges that natural science and human effort could not solve. Their bodies had become prisons. Yet, their stories did not end in defeat because they encountered the Lord Jesus Christ, who systematically dismantled their physical limitations and restored their bodies to perfect health.
III. THE HEAVENLY EXCHANGE: CASTING YOUR LOAD ON CHRIST
The invitation of the Lord Jesus Christ to humanity is simple:
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28
This is a spiritual exchange. Christ does not expect you to grit your teeth, summon your willpower, and quietly endure a physical ailment that is slowly destroying your body. Sickness is not a blessing from God; it is a physical burden designed by the enemy to steal your joy, drain your financial resources, and truncate your divine destiny.
When Jesus walked the earth, His primary ministry objective was the systematic eradication of sickness and disease (Matthew 9:35). He went from village to village, looking for heavy loads to lift.
When He met the man with the withered hand in the synagogue, He did not offer him theological sympathy; He commanded him to stretch out his hand, and it was instantly restored. When He encountered the invalid of thirty-eight years at Bethesda, He bypassed all protocols, told him to pick up his bed, and made him completely whole.
Jesus is still in the business of lifting heavy physical burdens today. He does not change. If He could heal Naaman’s leprosy and straighten the spine of the bent-double woman, He can easily destroy whatever physical symptom, cancer, chronic pain, or organ failure is currently threatening your body.
IV. STEPPING OUT OF THE CAGE: RECLAIMING YOUR PHYSICAL FREEDOM
How do you receive this deliverance? You must consciously shift your focus from the medical report to the finished work of Jesus on the cross. You must stop talking to God about how big your physical burden is, and start talking to your physical burden about how great your God is!
Approach the throne of grace with bold, unyielding faith. Declare your body a no-fly zone for sickness and disease.
Do not let the enemy convince you that your condition is too old, too rare, or too advanced for God’s power. Fill your heart daily with the life-giving Word of God, confess your healing, and actively cast the weight of that affliction onto the shoulders of Jesus Christ. He has already paid the price for your health, and He is fully prepared to carry your burdens and walk you into complete, physical restoration today.
V. KEY POINT
Jesus Christ is the ultimate Burden Bearer. Do not suffer in silence; cast your physical ailments, chronic pain, and bodily limitations upon Him today, and receive His supernatural rest.
VI. BIBLE READING SUMMARY: ISAIAH 61:1-4
The prophet Isaiah proclaims the ultimate, anointed mandate of the coming Messiah. He declares that the Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is upon Him to preach good news to the poor, bind up the brokenhearted, proclaim freedom to physical captives, and open prison doors to those who are bound.
The Messiah is sent to declare the favorable year of the Lord, comfort those who mourn, and replace their ashes with divine beauty, their mourning with the oil of joy, and their spirit of heaviness with a beautiful garment of praise. Consequently, those who are delivered will be called strong oaks of righteousness planted by God for His glory. They will go on to rebuild ancient ruins, raise up former desolations, and completely repair cities that have lain waste for many generations.
VII. BIBLE IN ONE YEAR SUMMARY: SONG OF SOLOMON 5-8
Song of Solomon 5: The bride describes a night of longing where she hesitates to open the door for her beloved. By the time she opens it, he has gone. She searches the city for him, is mistreated by the watchmen, and describes her beloved’s striking physical beauty to the daughters of Jerusalem.
Song of Solomon 6: The daughters of Jerusalem offer to help search for the groom. The groom reappears, pouring out passionate praise for his bride’s incomparable beauty, comparing her to the morning dawn, the moon, and the sun, and singling her out as his unique, perfect choice.
Song of Solomon 7: The groom describes the physical beauty of his bride in highly sensual, poetic detail. The bride responds by expressing her complete devotion to him, stating she belongs to her beloved, and invites him to go out into the vineyards and fields to enjoy their love together.
Song of Solomon 8: The bride wishes her beloved were like a brother so she could express her affection publicly without shame. The couple reflects on the unyielding, powerful nature of love, declaring that true love is as strong as death and cannot be quenched by many waters or bought with wealth.
VIII. HYMN 19: ROCK OF AGES, CLEFT FOR ME
1. Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee!
Let the water and the blood,
From Thy riven side which flowed,
Be of sin the double cure;
Cleanse me from its guilt and power.
2. Not the labours of my hands,
Can fulfill Thy law’s demands;
Could my zeal no respite know,
Could my tears forever flow,
All for sin could not atone;
Thou must save, and Thou alone.
3. Nothing in my hand I bring,
Simply to Thy cross I cling;
Naked, come to Thee for dress;
Helpless, look to Thee for grace;
Foul, I to the fountain fly;
Wash me, Saviour, or I die.
4. While I draw this fleeting breath,
When my eyelids close in death,
When I soar to worlds unknown,
See Thee on Thy judgment throne,
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee.
