THE LAKE OF FIRE
MESSAGE BY: Pastor E. A. Adeboye
MEMORISE: “And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.” — Revelation 20:15
I. THE SHOCKING DELUSION: RELIGIOUS POSITION WITHOUT ETERNAL PURITY
Several years ago, I had a deeply shocking experience that has stayed with me ever since. I heard a man boldly proclaim that he was actively preparing to go to hell!
To make matters worse, he boasted that he intended to drag my Father in the Lord, myself, and another minister along with him.
The most terrifying aspect of this incident was not merely his reckless statement, but his spiritual identity: he was a senior minister in the church at that time!

This tragic encounter illustrates a grave truth: holding an ecclesiastical office, wearing religious garments, or sitting in church pews does not automatically write your name in the Lamb’s Book of Life.
Many people sit under the preaching of the Gospel, witness the mighty signs and wonders of God, and even preach to others, yet secretly nurture a lifestyle that defies God’s holiness.
They live under a spiritual delusion, forgetting the stern warning of Matthew 7:21–23, where Jesus declared that many will say to Him on that day, “Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name?”—only to hear Him reply, “I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”
II. EXAMINING THE ANATOMY OF ETERNAL RUIN: REVELATION 21:8
In Revelation 21:8, the Spirit of God provides a clear, uncompromising blueprint of the traits that lead directly to the Lake of Fire—which Holy Scripture defines as the second death:
But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.” — Revelation 21:8

Let us dissect some of these categories so we can examine our own hearts:
1. The Fearful
These are individuals who are too cowardly to stand up for Jesus Christ in public. When pressed by societal pressure, peer influence, or persecution, they deny their faith.
Jesus gave a stern warning regarding cowardice in Matthew 10:33: “But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.”
2. The Unbelieving
This includes those who proudly label themselves atheists or agnostics. Deep down within their consciousness, they know God exists because creation itself testifies to His eternal power (Romans 1:20).
The Holy Spirit convicts their hearts regularly, yet they deliberately harden their minds, refuse to read God’s Word, and shut their ears to truth because they love their sin.
3. The Abominable, Murderers, and Sexually Immoral
These are people who indulge in perversions, harbor malicious hatred in their hearts (1 John 3:15), or engage in premarital sex, adultery, and all forms of sexual wickedness.
No matter how refined or socially acceptable these behaviors become in modern culture, God’s standards have not shifted by a fraction.
4. Sorcerers and Idolaters
This encompasses those who seek power, protection, or fortune outside of God—witches, wizards, cultists, users of charms, and those involved in secret societies.
It also includes anyone who elevates money, career, self, or family above the total lordship of Jesus Christ.
5. ALL Liars
Notice that God does not differentiate between “white lies” and “black lies.”
Whether it is falsifying documents at work, lying on tax returns, exaggerating stories to gain sympathy, or living a hypocritical life, Scripture explicitly states that ALL liars will have their part in the Lake of Fire!
III. THE UNCOMPROMISING HOLINESS OF THE NEW JERUSALEM
Contrast the horrific reality of the Lake of Fire with the unblemished purity required to enter the Holy City in Revelation 21:26–27:
“And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it. And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life.”

Heaven is a prepared place for a prepared people. God’s home cannot be defiled by unrepented sin, deceptive speech, or double-minded living.
The divine decree is absolute: nothing that defiles will ever set foot inside the gates of the New Jerusalem!
IV. A SOLEMN CALL TO SELF-EXAMINATION AND REPENTANCE
Beloved, today is not a day for self-righteous complacency. It is a day for sober, honest self-examination in the light of God’s Word.
Ask yourself these critical questions:

Am I harboring secret lies, sexual immorality, malice, or compromise in my private life?

Am I serving God in public while serving the devil in secret?
If you discover that any aspect of your life aligns with the eight categories listed in Revelation 21:8, do not panic—repent immediately!
God’s mercy is available right now, but it is only accessible to those who confess and forsake their sins (Proverbs 28:13). The precious blood of Jesus Christ is fully able to cleanse you from every stain of unrighteousness if you turn to Him with a sincere heart today!
V. KEY POINT
Do everything to ensure that you do not end up in the lake of fire.
VI. BIBLE TEXT SUMMARY: REVELATION 21:8, 21:26-27
Apostle John details the explicit boundaries of divine judgment and eternal destiny. Verse 8 declares that eight distinct groups of unrepentant sinners—the fearful, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars—will be sentenced to the lake burning with fire and brimstone, which is the second death. In verses 26 and 27, John describes the holy standard of the New Jerusalem, explaining that while the glory and honor of nations will be brought into it, nothing that defiles, commits abomination, or practices deceit will ever enter. Entrance is strictly reserved for those whose names are inscribed in the Lamb’s Book of Life.
VII. BIBLE IN ONE YEAR SUMMARY: ISAIAH 50–52
Isaiah 50: The Lord addresses Israel’s accusation that He abandoned them, challenging them to produce a certificate of divorce or show to which creditor He sold them, asserting that their own sins caused their exile. The chapter transitions into a prophetic portrait of the Suffering Servant (Jesus Christ), who listens to God morning by morning, gives His back to strikers, and does not hide His face from shame and spitting. The Servant expresses unshakeable confidence that God will help Him, warning those who walk in darkness to trust in the Lord rather than lighting their own self-made fires.
Isaiah 51: God calls His people to look to Abraham and Sarah, remembering their small beginnings and trusting Him to comfort Zion and transform her deserts into an Eden of joy and thanksgiving. He assures them that His salvation and righteousness are eternal, outlasting the vanishing heavens and decaying earth. God commands His people not to fear the reproach or revilings of mortal men who will be consumed like garments by moths. He calls Zion to awake and put on strength, reminding her that He has taken the cup of His fury out of her hand and placed it into the hands of her tormentors.
Isaiah 52: A magnificent prophecy calling Zion to awake, put on her beautiful garments, and shake herself free from the dust of captivity. The Lord declares that His people were sold for nothing and will be redeemed without money. The famous declaration echoes: “How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace!” The chapter concludes with a powerful messianic glimpse of the Lord’s Servant, who will be high, lifted up, and exalted, though His appearance was marred beyond human recognition, ultimately sprinkling many nations and silencing earthly kings.
VIII. HYMN 33: GUIDE ME, O THOU GREAT JEHOVAH
1. Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah!
Pilgrim through this barren land;
I am weak, but Thou art mighty,
Hold me with Thy powerful hand:

IX. PROPHETIC DECREE
I decree and declare that on this Wednesday, July 29, 2026, the Holy Spirit exposes and destroys every hidden trap of hypocrisy, compromise, and secret sin in your life!
You will not play religion while heading toward eternal destruction!
Every spirit of fearfulness, deception, double-mindedness, and spiritual rebellion is uprooted from your heart by the blood of Jesus!
I decree that your name is written firmly in the Lamb’s Book of Life, and you receive the supernatural grace to walk in holiness, truth, and unyielding fear of God all the days of your life!
You will not have your part in the Lake of Fire!
When the trumpet sounds and Jesus returns, you and your entire household will be caught up in glory to dwell in the New Jerusalem forever, in the mighty Name of Jesus Christ! Amen! Hallelujah!
