DELIVERANCE FROM MATERIAL BURDENS

MESSAGE BY: Pastor E. A. Adeboye

MEMORISE: “And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpiller, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you.” — Joel 2:25

I. THE STRATEGIC TRAP OF MATERIAL SCARCITY

In our continuous study of the various weights that oppress humanity, we must confront a highly prevalent and quietly devastating category: material burdens.

A material burden is not merely a lack of money; it is a heavy, systemic state of financial insufficiency, debt, lack, and economic stagnation. It is a tool that the enemy uses strategically.

The devil understands the vulnerability of the human condition. He knows that when an individual is constantly crushed by poverty, swimming in debt, and struggling to put food on the table, their spiritual resistance can easily be compromised. Scarcity breeds desperation, and desperation makes people highly vulnerable to temptations involving compromise, fraud, greed, and ethical shortcuts.

When you are constantly worrying about rent, school fees, and daily survival, it becomes difficult to focus your spiritual energy on the assignments of the Kingdom. The enemy wants to keep you in a survival state so that you can never step into your destiny as a kingdom distributor.

However, the Word of God makes it clear that Jesus Christ did not only come to save your soul; He also came to lift the heavy yoke of poverty and material insufficiency off your shoulders.

II. FROM THE BRINK OF DEATH TO COVENANT ABUNDANCE

Throughout scripture, we see the Burden Bearer systematically intervening in situations of extreme material desperation. Consider the historic account of the widow of Zarephath (1 Kings 17:7-16).

This woman was living through a catastrophic, regional famine. Day by day, she watched her material food supplies dwindle until she had nothing left but a single handful of flour in a jar and a little olive oil in a jug. Her situation was so bleak that she had resigned herself to a tragic fate: she went out to gather sticks to prepare one final, meager meal for herself and her son, expecting to eat it and slowly starve to death.

But right at the edge of her ultimate collapse, God dispatched a prophet to her house. The prophet Elijah issued a highly unusual instruction: “Make me a small cake from what you have first, and afterward make some for yourself and your son.”

To the natural, carnal mind, this request seemed utterly selfish and illogical. Yet, it was a spiritual test designed to shift her from the frequency of survival to the frequency of covenant supply.

She chose to believe, and she acted in faith. Consequently, the Burden Bearer took over her household. The flour jar did not run out, and the oil jug did not run dry for the remainder of the three-and-a-half-year famine. When you partner with God, your “not enough” is instantly converted into supernatural overflow.

III. THE 14-CAR TURNAROUND: THE DANGER OF UNRESTRICTED WORDS

The reality of material warfare is further illustrated by a remarkable modern testimony. Many years ago, a highly prosperous, wealthy businessman had a bitter, heated argument with his wife. In the height of her anger and frustration, she pointed her finger at him and made a highly specific declaration: “By the time I am finished with you, you will travel everywhere in the massive city of Lagos on foot.”

At the time, the man laughed her statement off. He was incredibly wealthy and had a fleet of fourteen high-end luxury vehicles parked in his driveway. The idea of him walking was practically absurd.

However, a slow, systematic decline began to occur in his businesses. One door after another closed. One contract after another was canceled. He had to sell off his vehicles one by one to pay debts and keep things afloat.

Eventually, he was reduced to having only a single car left, and exactly 50 kobo in his pocket. He found himself in an agonizing dilemma: “If I use this 50 kobo to buy fuel for my last car, I will have no money left to buy food. But if I use this money to buy food to eat, I will have no fuel, and I will have to walk everywhere—just as my wife declared.”

It was in this state of absolute brokenness and material oppression that he ran to the Lord Jesus Christ. He surrendered his life, his businesses, and his financial ruins to the Master.

The Savior took over his case, broke the spiritual embargo over his finances, and systematically rebuilt his empire. When this man stood before the congregation to share his testimony of restoration, he was not just celebrating a new business contract; he was simultaneously dedicating two brand-new, debt-free houses!

No matter how low your finances have fallen, if you can hand the ruins over to Jesus today, He will construct a monument of testimony out of your life.

IV. HAGGAI’S DIAGNOSIS: THE MYSTERY OF THE LEAKING BAG

Our Bible reading today from the prophet Haggai reveals a major spiritual law that governs material resources. The Israelites had returned from exile and had successfully built beautiful, luxurious, paneled houses for themselves. However, they completely neglected and abandoned the construction of the Temple of God, leaving it in ruins.

When confronted about their neglect, they made excuses, saying, “The time has not yet come for the Lord’s house to be built.”

Because they prioritized their personal comfort over the interests of God’s Kingdom, they triggered a severe spiritual leakage in their finances. The Lord pointed out their condition:

“Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have not enough… and he that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes.” — Haggai 1:6

This is the spiritual diagnosis of many hard-working people today. They work multiple jobs, earn decent wages, and put in massive hours, yet they have nothing to show for it. Unexplained emergencies, sudden car breakdowns, health crises, and mysterious expenses constantly drain their accounts. They are putting their hard-earned money into a “bag with holes.”

The cure for this material burden is simple: reorder your priorities.

Jesus gave us the master key to financial security and abundance in Matthew 6:33: “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”

When you make God’s business your absolute priority—supporting the gospel, helping the needy, and honoring Him with your tithes and offerings—He assumes full responsibility for your material well-being. He personally patches the holes in your financial bag and rebukes the devourer for your sake. If you have suffered material losses, turn to Him today. He is ready to restore everything the spiritual locusts have stolen from you!

V. KEY POINT

You cannot bypass the law of prioritizing God’s Kingdom and expect to enjoy sustained, struggle-free material prosperity. Mind His business, and He will secure your abundance.

VI. BIBLE TEXT SUMMARY: HAGGAI 1:2-8

The Lord of hosts addresses the excuses of the returned exiles who claim it is not yet time to rebuild the temple. Through the prophet Haggai, God questions how they can comfortably live in beautifully finished, paneled houses while His own house lies in complete ruins. He commands them to “consider their ways,” pointing out the futility of their labor—noting that they sow much but reap little, eat and drink without being satisfied, clothe themselves without staying warm, and watch their hard-earned wages disappear into bags with holes. Finally, the Lord commands them to go up to the mountain, bring down wood, and rebuild the temple so that He may take pleasure in it and be glorified.

VII. BIBLE IN ONE YEAR SUMMARY: ISAIAH 1-3

Isaiah 1: The prophet Isaiah delivers a powerful, courtroom-style indictment from God against the rebellious nation of Judah. God expresses His deep disgust for their empty, hypocritical religious rituals, feasts, and sacrifices while their hands are stained with injustice and blood. He calls them to wash and make themselves clean, extending a famous invitation: “Come now, and let us reason together… though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.” The chapter concludes with a promise of redemption for Zion through justice, and the destruction of unrepentant rebels.

Isaiah 2: Isaiah receives a glorious vision of the future, where the mountain of the Lord’s temple will be established as the chief among the mountains, drawing all nations to learn God’s ways. This era of ultimate peace is described as a time when nations will beat their swords into plowshares and learn war no more. However, the scene shifts to a warning about the imminent Day of the Lord, which will bring down everything that is proud, lofty, and arrogant among men, forcing them to hide in caves from the dread of the Lord.

Isaiah 3: The prophet warns of a severe social collapse in Jerusalem and Judah, where the Lord strips away their primary supplies of food, water, and stable leadership. Because of their defiant speech and actions against God, society descends into chaos, where children rule over elders and the weak are oppressed by the strong. Isaiah specifically denounces the haughty, materialistic women of Zion, warning that their expensive ornaments, fine perfumes, and luxury clothing will be replaced by shame, baldness, and captivity.

VIII. HYMN 26: THERE SHALL BE SHOWERS OF BLESSINGS

1. There shall be showers of blessing:

This is the promise of love;

There shall be seasons refreshing,

Sent from the Saviour above.

Showers of blessing,

Showers of blessing we need;

Mercy-drops round us are falling,

But for the showers we plead.

2. There shall be showers of blessing

Precious reviving again;

Over the hills and the valleys,

Sound of abundance of rain.

3. There shall be showers of blessing;

Send them upon us, O Lord!

Grant to us now a refreshing;

Come, and now honour Thy Word.

4. There shall be showers of blessing;

Oh, that today they might fall,

Now as to God we’re confessing,

Now as on Jesus we call!

IX. PROPHETIC DECREE

I decree and declare that on this Wednesday, July 15, 2026, every demonic embargo of poverty, lack, and financial stagnation over your life is shattered by the fire of the Holy Ghost! I command the leaking holes in your financial bag to be supernaturally sealed right now by the blood of the Covenant!

You are delivered from the spirit of “sowing much but reaping little.”

I decree that according to Joel 2:25, the Almighty God is restoring every single year, resource, contract, and property that the spiritual locusts, cankerworms, and devourers have stolen from you or your family.

As you align your heart to seek first His Kingdom today, may the windows of heaven fling wide open over your career and business. You will no longer struggle to survive; you are stepping into a realm of supernatural overflow, debt-free living, and kingdom-advancing wealth, in the mighty and victorious Name of Jesus Christ! Amen! Hallelujah!
