RHAPSODY OF REALITIES DAILY DEVOTIONAL
THE CHURCH IS MORE THAN A BUILDING
MESSAGE BY: Pastor Chris Oyakhilome DSc DSc DD
MEMORISE: “Greet Priscilla and Aquila my helpers in Christ Jesus: Who have for my life laid down their own necks: unto whom not only I give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles. Likewise greet the church that is in their house…” — Romans 16:3-5
I. THE STRATEGIC BLUEPRINT OF THE EARLY CHURCH
When you embark on a meticulous, deep study of the New Testament—particularly the sixteenth chapter of the Book of Romans—the Holy Spirit unveils a highly striking, revolutionary administrative blueprint that characterized the early Church.
The early Church was never designed as a single, centralized, static congregation locked within a corporate physical monument. Instead, it was an explosive, dynamic network of multiple household fellowships, cells, and active groups of God’s people meeting organically in various locations. Yet, despite their geographic distribution, they operated as one cohesive, single-minded entity.
This decentralized kingdom structure becomes remarkably clear when you examine the structural opening of Paul’s letter to the saints in Rome: “To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints…” (Romans 1:7).
Paul was not addressing a congregation sitting under one roof with a single steeple. The Church of Jesus Christ in Rome was widely distributed across the entire empire, woven directly into the fabric of the community through strategic home fellowships.
When Paul explicitly commands the believers to greet Priscilla and Aquila along with “the church that is in their house,” he is exposing us to the authentic molecular structure of the Body of Christ. The church was not where they went; the church was who they were.
II. THE CELLULAR PRINCIPLE: FAMILIES TURNED INTO COVENANT STATIONS
As you navigate further through the closing salutations of the Roman epistle, Paul continues to highlight this decentralized architecture. In the tenth verse, he writes, “…salute them which are of Aristobulus’ household,” and immediately follows in the eleventh verse by stating, “…Greet them that be of the household of Narcissus, which are in the Lord.”
It is a monumental theological mistake to view these mentions as simple, casual shout-outs to natural, biological families. These households were highly organized, spiritually vibrant local assemblies. They were living, breathing extensions and operational headquarters of Paul’s apostolic ministry.
This reveals an exquisite, profound spiritual reality: The Church is fundamentally a people, not a place; it is a live movement, not a physical monument.
The early disciples beautifully balanced the corporate and the cellular dimensions of fellowship. As recorded in Acts 2:46, “And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house…” They took advantage of the large public temple courts for massive declarations, but the real discipleship, structural care, and spiritual warfare occurred in the smaller, intimate household fellowships. In those living rooms, they shared the raw Word, broke bread, interceded for one another, and accelerated their spiritual growth.
III. THE INDESTRUCTIBLE INFRASTRUCTURE OF THE KINGDOM
It was precisely this cell-based, house-to-house organizational structure that made the early Church completely indestructible, bulletproof, and resilient against imperial assault. When waves of violent, state-sponsored persecution arose under the Roman emperors, the enemy targeted central meeting points, thinking that by destroying the buildings, they could decapitate the movement.
But their strategy failed completely. You can confiscate a property, seal up a cathedral, or demolish a structural monument, but you cannot destroy a Church that lives inside the hearts and homes of its members!
As long as the resurrected people of God are alive, the Church of Jesus Christ remains fully present, active, and operational. This is exactly why localized, intimate fellowship is non-negotiable for your spiritual vitality.
Wherever two or three Christians deliberately assemble themselves together in the Matchless Name of the Lord, His raw, manifest presence is instantly activated—and right there, the Church is in session!
The Lord Jesus Christ underscored the atomic, explosive power of even the absolute smallest assembly when He declared in Matthew 18:20, “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” The presence of Christ does not require architectural grandeur; it requires corporate alignment.
IV. EXPANDING THE REALM OF GLORY
Therefore, you must completely refuse to minimize, reduce, or limit the magnificent reality of the Church to a mere physical geographic location or a concrete, stone structure. Open your spirit to comprehend its true, multi-dimensional nature: it is the living, breathing, walking supernatural Body of Christ on earth, expressed flawlessly through His called-out people in deep fellowship, absolute unity, and focused kingdom purpose.
You are called to be an active, participating part of this global, supernatural expression. Do not be a passive spectator in the kingdom. Strengthen your local cell group, build up your home fellowship, and pour your energy into cultivating the growth of others.
That is the exact mechanism through which the Church expands its influence, shatters regional limitations, and advances the glorious Kingdom of God from one level of glory to an even higher realm of glory. Hallelujah!
V. PRAYER
Dear Heavenly Father, I thank You for the glorious privilege of making me an active, vital member of the Church—the living, breathing, unstoppable Body of Jesus Christ on earth. I take my place today to function dynamically in holy fellowship, consistently contributing my spiritual gifts, time, and resources to the growth, edification, and strengthening of everyone around me. Through my life, Your divine nature is expressed, and Your unshakeable Kingdom is aggressively advanced today, in the mighty and victorious Name of Jesus. Amen.
VI. FURTHER STUDY SUMMARY
Acts 2:46 (NIV): The early believers maintained a dual-layered approach to their spiritual lifestyle. Every single day, they met collectively in the large public temple courts, while simultaneously maintaining intimate, high-impact fellowship by breaking bread in their individual homes, sharing meals with pure, glad, and sincere hearts.
1 Corinthians 16:19 (KJV): The Apostle Paul relays the passionate greetings of the global churches of Asia, emphasizing that Aquila and Priscilla send deep spiritual salutations in the Lord, specifically highlighting “the church that is in their house,” proving that their domestic residence served as a recognized center for church life.
Matthew 16:18 (KJV): Jesus issues an absolute prophetic decree to Peter, asserting that upon the rock-solid revelation of His identity as the Son of the Living God, He will personally build His Church—and the gates, counsels, and legal machinations of hell itself shall never be able to overpower, resist, or prevail against it.
VII. BIBLE IN ONE YEAR SUMMARY: ACTS 21:37–22:21 & JOB 32–35
Acts 21:37–22:21: As Paul is about to be brought into the Roman barracks amidst a violent riot in Jerusalem, he requests permission from the commander to speak to the angry crowd. Standing on the stairs, Paul speaks to them in the Hebrew language, instantly silencing the mob. He shares his powerful personal testimony—describing his former zeal in persecuting the Church, his supernatural encounter with the blinding light of the resurrected Christ on the road to Damascus, and his subsequent conversion. The crowd listens intently until Paul reveals his specific apostolic mandate: that God commanded him saying, “Depart: for I will send thee far hence unto the Gentiles,” which immediately reignites the crowd’s fury.
Job 32–35: Elihu, a younger bystander who had remained silent out of respect for the age of Job and his three friends, finally speaks up because his anger is deeply kindled. He rebukes the three friends for failing to provide an adequate answer while still condemning Job, and he rebukes Job for self-righteously justifying himself rather than God. Elihu argues passionately for the absolute sovereignty and justice of God, asserting that God speaks to humanity through dreams and physical afflictions to keep them from pride and the pit. He emphasizes that the Almighty is too pure to commit injustice, and that our human righteousness does not add anything to God, nor does our sin diminish Him, because God is infinitely above human actions.
VIII. BIBLE IN TWO YEAR SUMMARY: GALATIANS 3:23–29 & ISAIAH 33
Galatians 3:23–29: Paul explains the historical purpose of the Old Testament law, describing it as a strict tutor or guardian that kept humanity under guard until the arrival of faith. Now that the era of faith has successfully come, believers are no longer under the custody of that legalistic tutor. Through faith in Christ Jesus, all believers have become authentic children of God. Having been baptized into Christ, they have completely put on Christ like a garment, effectively abolishing all cultural, social, and gender divisions. In Christ, everyone is unified, recognized as Abraham’s true spiritual seed, and legal heirs according to the covenant promise.
Isaiah 33: The prophet releases a devastating woe against the Assyrian destroyer who has dealt treacherously but has not yet been dealt treacherously with. Isaiah prays for God’s grace and intervention in a time of national distress. He provides a magnificent vision of the Lord arising in His majesty to scatter the enemy nations. The text describes God as an absolute, all-consuming fire to the hypocrites, but a glorious refuge to the righteous who refuse to participate in extortion or bloodshed. Isaiah beautifully concludes by promising that God’s people will look upon the King in His beauty, and that the Lord is our Judge, our Lawgiver, and our King—He will completely save us.
