UNBELIEF, AN AFFRONT TO GOD

I. THE ANATOMY OF AN AFFRONT: UNDERSTANDING UNBELIEF
As we step into this new week on Monday, April 20, 2026, the Holy Spirit confronts us with a sober truth: Unbelief is not a mere human weakness; it is a direct affront to the character of God. To “affront” means to insult someone to their face—to intentionally disrespect their dignity or authority. When we hear the Word of God or receive a divine promise and respond with “How can this be?” based on our physical limitations, we are essentially calling the Creator of the Universe a liar or, at the very least, an incompetent exaggerator.
The tragedy of unbelief is that it often wears the mask of “realism” or “practicality.” We think we are being wise by acknowledging our circumstances, but in reality, we are prioritizing the “facts” of the earth over the “Truth” of the Kingdom.
II. THE ZECHARIAH SYNDROME: PRAYING WITHOUT EXPECTATION
In our Bible reading, we meet Zechariah, a righteous priest serving in the Temple. He was a man of God, performing holy duties. For years, he and his wife, Elizabeth, had petitioned Heaven for a child. Now, in the twilight of their lives, the Archangel Gabriel appears with a staggering announcement: “Thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son.”
1. The Logic of the Flesh
Instead of a shout of joy, Zechariah responds with a clinical evaluation: “Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.” (Luke 1:18).
Zechariah’s mistake was two-fold:
He looked at the biological clock: He allowed the natural laws of geriatrics to overshadow the supernatural laws of God.
He forgot his history: He was a priest! He knew the story of Abraham and Sarah. He knew God had done this before, yet he treated his own situation as “too difficult” for the Almighty.
2. The Discipline of Silence
Because Zechariah’s words were an affront to the divine message, God imposed a “holy gag order.” Gabriel struck him dumb. Why? Because unbelief is contagious. If Zechariah had gone home and spoken his doubts to Elizabeth, he might have aborted the miracle in her spirit. God would rather have you silent than have you speaking words that contradict His promises.
III. THE RHODA INCIDENT: RELIGIOUS UNBELIEF
The devotional points us to another startling example in Acts 12. The church was gathered in a fervent prayer meeting for Peter’s release from prison. When God answered their prayer and Peter stood knocking at the gate, Rhoda—the only one in the house with simple, childlike faith—announced he was there.
The “prayer warriors” didn’t celebrate; they mocked her. “Thou art mad,” they said. When she insisted, they reasoned, “It is his angel.” Do you see the irony? They had the power to move Heaven to open the prison gates, but they didn’t have the faith to believe the gates were actually open. Many of us in 2026 are “Rhoda’s critics.” We attend vigils and fast, yet the moment the answer appears, we look for “rational” explanations that exclude the hand of God.
IV. THE CONSEQUENCES: THE WILDERNESS OF THE WASTED
Unbelief is not just a personal struggle; it is a thief of destiny. The devotional reminds us of the Israelites in Numbers 14. These were people who had seen the ten plagues of Egypt, walked through the divided Red Sea, and ate manna from heaven daily. Yet, at the borders of the Promised Land, they allowed the “giants” to look larger than their “God.”
The Verdict: God swore they would not enter His rest.
The Casualty Rate: An entire generation (except Joshua and Caleb) perished in the wilderness.
Unbelief turns a 11-day journey into a 40-year funeral procession. It robs you of the “Canaan” God has prepared for your career, your marriage, and your ministry.
V. THE CLOUD OF WITNESSES: QUEUING BEHIND FAITH
To overcome the affront of unbelief, we must consciously align ourselves with those who “judged Him faithful who had promised” (Hebrews 11:11).
Rahab: She believed the report of God’s power before she ever saw a miracle.
Daniel: He trusted God’s ability in a lion’s den, refusing to let the “roar” of the enemy silence his faith.
Paul: In the midst of a shipwreck, he stood and declared, “I believe God, that it shall be even as it was told me” (Acts 27:25).
Worship in 2026 is not just singing songs; it is the radical act of believing God against the “shipwrecks” of our current economy and personal trials.
VI. COMPREHENSIVE Q&A: ERADICATING DOUBT
Q1: Is it a sin to have ‘questions’ for God like Zechariah did?
Answer: There is a difference between the “Question of Enquiry” (Mary’s “How shall this be?”) and the “Question of Doubt” (Zechariah’s “Whereby shall I know this?”). Mary wanted to know the process so she could cooperate; Zechariah wanted proof because he didn’t believe. God welcomes your “How,” but He is grieved by your “If.”
Q2: I have spoken words of doubt after my prayers. Is it too late for my miracle?
Answer: No. Like Zechariah, God’s mercy can still bring the promise to pass, but you may experience “unnecessary silence” or delay. Repent immediately. Cancel those words of doubt and begin to speak the Word. The “season” of fulfillment (Luke 1:20) is still available if you return to faith.
Q3: How do I deal with ‘Logical Unbelief’—where the facts really are against me?
Answer: You must realize that facts are subject to change, but Truth is eternal. Romans 4:18-19 says Abraham “considered not his own body now dead.” He knew the facts, but he chose not to “consider” them. Stop meditating on the “deadness” of your bank account or your medical report, and start meditating on the “Life” of the Promise.
VII. THE 2026 PROPHETIC CHALLENGE: SPEAKING LIFE
In this digital age of 2026, we are bombarded with “bad reports” and “expert opinions” that fuel anxiety. This devotional is a call to a higher plane. If your words and actions have been an affront to God, today is your day of realignment.

Heaven is waiting to respond to the believer who treats God’s Word as the final authority. Don’t let unbelief rob you of the “Possibilities” that this year holds.
VIII. REFLECTION & PROPHETIC ALIGNMENT
THOUGHT TO PONDER:
If God was to answer my prayers based on the words I spoke after I left the altar today, would I receive a miracle or a wilderness?
ACTION POINT:
Look back at the prayers you have offered this month. Have you been speaking “doubt, fear, and unbelief” since you prayed?
Identify the Doubt: Write down the negative words you’ve said.
Apply the Blood: Ask God to forgive your unbelief.
Proclaim the Truth: Find a specific scripture that addresses your situation and speak it out loud seven times.
PRAYER POINT:
O Lord, please forgive me for every time my heart doubted Your ability. Forgive me for the words I have spoken that were an affront to Your majesty. Today, I receive Your grace to help my unbelief. Teach me to trust You even when my circumstances are ‘stricken in years.’ I choose to believe Your Word, and I declare that every promise for my life shall be fulfilled in its season, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
PROPHETIC DECREE:
I decree today that the spirit of Zechariah—the spirit of “praying without believing”—is broken over your life! I command your spiritual ears to be opened to the Archangelic announcements of Heaven! You shall no longer be “dumb” and “stagnant” in the wilderness of doubt. I decree that because you have chosen to “queue behind Paul and Daniel,” you shall see the “Possibilities” of God manifest in your finances, your health, and your family this April! Your season of performance has arrived, and no “giant” shall stand in your way, in Jesus’ Name!
