I. THE METAPHYSICAL REALITY OF SPIRITUAL SENSITIVITY
On this beautiful Saturday, May 23, 2026, the Holy Spirit brings us a deep look at our inner sight, focusing on the critical theme of spiritual discernment. The invisible world is not a distant place; it is a real environment that constantly surrounds our daily lives. Every physical action, human decision, and material movement is closely linked to invisible forces. Because these two worlds interact so closely, a believer cannot afford to navigate life using only physical senses, human intelligence, or logical reasoning.
To live without spiritual discernment is like walking through a dangerous minefield while wearing a heavy blindfold. The absolute necessity of being spiritually discerning is highlighted by King David’s urgent prayer in Psalm 13:3: “Consider and hear me, O LORD my God: lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death.” David understood that if his spiritual vision became dark or dim, he would easily fall into a deep, dangerous sleep of compromise—a state that leads directly to destruction.
Spiritual discernment is the divine ability given by the Holy Spirit that lets a believer see, understand, and know the true source, direction, and purpose of the invisible forces around them. It is an internal early warning system that shows whether a situation, an idea, or an opportunity comes from the Spirit of God, human ambition, or demonic deception.
When your spiritual vision is bright, you can notice subtle shifts in the spiritual atmosphere before they show up in the physical world. This clarity allows you to walk away from hidden traps, stand strong against sudden spiritual attacks, and stay perfectly aligned with God’s timing. Conversely, when a Christian’s inner vision is clouded, they become blind to the spiritual realities of their choices, leaving them completely vulnerable to unexpected spiritual harm.
II. THE OBAFEMI AWOLOWO UNIVERSITY NARRATIVE: THE LIFE-SAVING PROMPT
To understand how spiritual discernment works practically, we look at a remarkable real-life account from the University of Ife (now known as Obafemi Awolowo University) in South-West Nigeria. A young man who had served as the secretary of a dangerous campus cult group experienced the transformative power of God, gave his life to Jesus Christ, and boldly chose to cut all ties with the cult.
Because he possessed deep, confidential knowledge of their inner operations and secret oaths, the remaining cult members immediately marked him for death. One night, after a long and exhausting study session at the university library, the young man returned to his hostel room completely tired. Feeling the heavy weight of physical exhaustion, he muttered a very short, routine prayer and lay down on his bed to sleep.

(Demon Rebuked & Chased Out)
As he closed his eyes, the Holy Spirit gave him a distinct internal nudge to get up and pray. Overcoming his tiredness, he sat up, offered another brief prayer, and tried to rest again. Instantly, the Holy Spirit gave him a second nudge. Recognizing the persistent weight of this inner alert, he thought to himself, “Well, let me pray just as God wants.” He knelt down and engaged in a purposeful time of prayer.
As he finished praying, he opened his eyes and saw a terrifying sight: a massive demon covered in dark charms walked directly through his locked hostel door. The entity moved steadily toward his bed to destroy him. Because the young man was fully awake and spiritually alert, he immediately stood his ground and rebuked the demon in the mighty Name of Jesus. The demon stopped, lost its footing, and slowly retreated back out of the room.
When this young man later shared this experience with me, I asked him directly, “Are you sure you weren’t dreaming?” He answered, “I would have thought I was dreaming too, sir; however, because of how loudly I shouted when rebuking that demon, my roommate moved on his bed. As he turned, his leg reached out and touched the demon as it was retreating. My roommate’s leg, which made physical contact with that dark entity, swelled up to three times its normal size, and he had to spend a whole year seeking medical and spiritual treatment for it.”
This intense testimony proves that spiritual discernment is often the clear boundary between life and sudden death. If that young secretary had ignored the repetitive nudges of the Holy Spirit, he would have been killed in his sleep, and people would have assumed he died of natural causes. His obedience kept him awake, alert, and fully armed to defeat the power of darkness.
III. THE SAMSON EXEGESIS: THE DANGER OF SPIRITUAL BLINDNESS
In sharp contrast to the alert young student, the historical narrative of Samson in Judges 16:19–21 shows the tragic consequences of losing your spiritual discernment. Samson was a man chosen by God from birth, given supernatural physical strength to deliver Israel from Philistine oppression. However, he repeatedly allowed compromising relationships and persistent disobedience to guide his life. The turning point of his downfall happened in Delilah’s house:
“And she made him sleep upon her knees; and she called for a man, and she caused him to shave off the seven locks of his head; and she began to afflict him, and his strength went from him. And she said, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times before, and shake myself. And he wist not that the LORD was departed from him. But the Philistines took him, and put out his eyes, and brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of brass; and he did grind in the prison house.”
This passage reveals a terrifying truth about spiritual decay: it makes a person completely unaware of their true condition.

Physical Captivity
(Gouged Eyes & Prison House)
Samson lay fast asleep on the knees of the enemy, entirely unaware that the very source of his covenant strength was being systematically cut away. Sin had acted as a powerful spiritual sedative, completely numbing his inner senses. When Delilah called out that his enemies were upon him, he woke up with the confidence of his past victories, saying, “I will go out as at other times before, and shake myself.”
The most tragic words in this narrative are: “And he wist not that the LORD was departed from him.” Samson was completely unaware that his spiritual protection was gone. His inner vision was so dark that he did not realize the Holy Spirit had left him.
The immediate result of Samson’s spiritual blindness was the loss of his physical sight. The Philistines captured him, put out his eyes, brought him down to Gaza, bound him in heavy bronze chains, and forced him to grind grain like a common animal in the prison house.
The man who was called to be a glorious deliverer became a mock spectacle for his enemies, simply because he allowed compromise to blind his spiritual eyes. He fell into the very “sleep of death” that King David prayed against so urgently.
IV. ANALYTICAL INSIGHT: THE MATING OF SIN, UNBELIEF, AND SPIRITUAL DULLNESS
As we look closely at these two contrasting accounts on this May 23, 2026, we see a clear spiritual law: your level of obedience determines your level of spiritual perception.
1. The Blinding Effect of Disobedience
Spiritual dullness does not happen overnight; it is the natural result of gradual compromise and delayed obedience. Every time a believer intentionally ignores the promptings of the Holy Spirit or chooses to compromise with sin, a thin layer of insensitivity forms over their heart.
If this choice to sin continues, the heart becomes calloused, making it incredibly difficult to hear the gentle voice of God. This is exactly what happened to Samson. He had played with compromise so many times that he could no longer tell the difference between the holy presence of God and the deceptive comfort of Delilah’s home.
2. Complete Obedience as a Clear Filter
Conversely, choosing to walk in quick, complete obedience keeps your spiritual sight incredibly sharp. When you obey God’s instructions without trying to argue or compromise, your heart becomes a clean, clear filter that can easily receive heaven’s signals.
Obedience aligns your mind with the thoughts of God, allowing the Holy Spirit to reveal deep and hidden truths to you. Like the young university student, an obedient believer stays sensitive to the slightest nudge from God, ensuring they are always positioned exactly where safety and victory are found.
V. COMPREHENSIVE Q&A: MAINTAINING SHARP SPIRITUAL PERCEPTION
Q1: What should I do if I realize my spiritual discernment has become dull due to past disobedience or compromise?
Answer: The first step is to immediately repent before God without making any excuses. Ask the Lord to forgive your compromise and to cleanse your heart from all unrighteousness. You must actively return to a lifestyle of complete obedience, starting with the very last instruction God gave you that you may have ignored. Dedicate quality time to feeding on the Word of God and praying in the Holy Spirit, as these spiritual disciplines will wash away inner dullness and restore your spiritual vision.
Q2: How can I distinguish between a genuine prompt from the Holy Spirit and my own human thoughts or anxieties?
Answer: A genuine prompt from the Holy Spirit is always perfectly aligned with the written Word of God. It brings a deep, underlying sense of divine authority and peace, even when it challenges your comfort. Human anxiety, on the other hand, is driven by fear, confusion, and panic. Furthermore, the Holy Spirit’s promptings are consistent and persistent, often pointing you toward righteousness, prayer, and protection, whereas your own passing thoughts quickly change based on your emotions.
Q3: Can a believer rely entirely on the spiritual discernment of their pastor or spiritual leaders for protection?
Answer: While God places pastors and spiritual leaders in our lives to provide oversight, guidance, and prophetic covering, every single believer must develop their own personal relationship with the Holy Spirit. Spiritual attacks and daily choices happen in your personal life, and you need a ready supply of discernment for yourself. You cannot live safely on borrowed light; you must ensure your own spiritual eyes are bright and alert at all times.
VI. REFLECTION & ACTION PROTOCOLS
THOUGHT TO PONDER: If the Holy Spirit gave me an urgent nudge right now to change my direction or start praying, is my heart sensitive enough to hear Him, or am I too distracted by the noise of compromise?
ACTION POINTS:
Immediate Inventory: Sit quietly before the Lord today and review any past instructions He has given you. Write down any areas where you have delayed your obedience and commit to completing them today.
The Vision Preservation: Fasten your heart against small compromises this week. Intentionally turn away from ungodly conversations, media, or habits that cause spiritual dullness.
Consistent Prayer Watch: Set aside a dedicated time during the night or early morning to pray in the Holy Spirit, intentionally sharpening your inner senses and asking God to lighten your eyes.
VII. THE CORE PRAYER
Oh Lord God Almighty, the Holy One of Israel, the Creator of the ends of the earth! I come before You today with a heart that longs for Your truth. I ask that You forgive me for every moment of compromise, delayed obedience, or spiritual carelessness that has dimmed my inner sight.
Lord, look upon me with mercy and hear my cry: lighten my eyes today with the radiant light of Your Holy Spirit! Remove every layer of spiritual dullness, distraction, or complacency from my heart. I refuse to sleep the sleep of spiritual death!
Grant me the grace to obey Your instructions immediately and completely, without any negotiation. Keep my heart sensitive to Your gentlest nudges, so that I may walk in absolute safety, fulfill Your perfect purpose, and remain a burning light for Your Kingdom. In the victorious and matchless Name of Jesus Christ, Amen!
