LOVE SHOULD NOT HINDER GOD’S WILL: THE PERIL OF CARNAL PROTECTION, THE ELIAB COMPLEX, AND THE DISCERNMENT MANDATE
BIBLE READING: 1 SAMUEL 17:26–31 (KJV)
BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: PSALMS 34–37 & ROMANS 6:1–23
MESSAGE BY: PASTOR E. A. ADEBOYE
KEY VERSE: “But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.” — (MATTHEW 16:23)
I. THE PARADOX OF AFFECTION: WHEN GOOD INTENTIONS BECOME SPIRITUAL OBSTACLES
On this beautiful Thursday morning, June 11, 2026, the Holy Spirit brings us a profound, structurally crucial message titled “Love Should Not Hinder God’s Will.” We are forced to look at an uncomfortable but deeply essential reality in our walk of faith: some of our greatest spiritual battles will not come from hateful enemies, but from well-meaning loved ones. It is entirely possible for people who genuinely love you, care for you, and want the absolute best for you to unconsciously become tools of limitation in the hands of the adversary. Because their eyes are fixed on your physical comfort, safety, and survival, they often try to protect you from the very sacrifices, risks, and territorial battles that God has pre-ordained for your spiritual elevation.
To illustrate this, Pastor Adeboye shares a powerful personal experience from December 2018 during the annual Let’s-Go-A-Fishing evangelism initiative. After traveling extensively on extremely poor roads, his physical body broke down completely from pure exhaustion, forcing him to spend Christmas Day confined to his bed. To ensure his safe return to Redemption City, a helicopter was chartered. However, upon its arrival, an overwhelming crowd of passionate church members gathered around. They were not driven by malice; they were driven by intense love and a desire to see their spiritual father. Yet, in their excitement, they clung to the aircraft, creating a highly volatile situation that broke one of the helicopter’s windows and actively endangered the lives of everyone on board. Their affection, though genuine, lacked the wisdom necessary to protect the very person they loved.
II. THE ELIAB COMPLEX: ANATOMY OF FRATERNAL REBUKE
Look closely at what is happening here. Eliab was not necessarily a wicked man; he was a big brother acting out of natural, protective instincts. He knew David had zero military training, lacked body armor, and was completely unequipped by human standards to survive a clash with a seasoned killing machine like Goliath. If you looked at the situation through purely human lenses, Eliab was being responsible.
But from a spiritual perspective, Eliab’s carnal protection was a demonic trap. Had David listened to his brother’s logical, love-motivated discouragement, he would have picked up his bags, returned to his few sheep in the wilderness, and completely missed the historic milestone that launched him onto the throne of Israel. David had to recognize that a higher cause was at stake, prompting his famous reply: “What have I now done? Is there not a cause?”
III. THE PETER TRAP: IDENTIFYING THE SATANIC OFFENSE
An even more sobering example is recorded in Matthew 16:21–23. The Apostle Peter had just received a magnificent, flesh-and-blood-shattering revelation that Jesus was the Christ, the Son of the living God. Yet, moments later, when Jesus began to openly detail His impending suffering, death, and resurrection, Peter took the Master aside and began to fiercely rebuke Him, saying, “Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee.”
Peter’s reaction did not come from hatred; it came from deep, personal affection for his Master. He could not bear the thought of Jesus experiencing agony. However, look at how sharply Jesus responded: “Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.”
CRITICAL SPIRITUAL PRINCIPLE
Jesus did not call Peter “Satan” because Peter was demon-possessed. He did so because, at that precise moment, Peter allowed his human affection to align with Satan’s primary objective: preventing the sacrifice of the Cross. Any voice that tries to protect you from fulfilling your divine assignment—no matter how sweetly it is spoken—is an offense to your destiny.
IV. COMPREHENSIVE Q&A
Q1: How can I distinguish between a loved one giving me wise, godly advice and a loved one who is accidentally hindering God’s will?
Answer: You must judge every piece of advice by its ultimate destination. Godly advice aligns with scripture, encourages obedience to God, and prioritizes your spiritual calling over your physical comfort. Carnal advice, even when wrapped in love, always appeals to your fear, prioritizes self-preservation, and urges you to take an easy path away from what God has instructed.
Q2: Does this mean I should be rebellious, disrespectful, or dismissive toward my parents or spouse when making spiritual decisions?
Answer: Absolutely not. David did not exchange insults with Eliab; he simply turned away from him and kept speaking to those who had the answer. You must maintain absolute honor, politeness, and respect toward your loved ones. However, your ultimate loyalty belongs to God. You politely but firmly decline to let human fears override divine instructions.
Q3: What should I do if my spouse or parents object to a major step of faith I feel led to take?
Answer: Do not fight them with carnal arguments. Go to God in deep intercession. Pray that the Holy Spirit will open their eyes to see what He is doing in your life. Often, when God is truly leading a step, He will eventually align the hearts of those around you or grant you a peaceful breakthrough, just as Saul eventually sent for David after David bypassed Eliab.
V. REFLECTION & ACTION PROTOCOLS
THOUGHT TO PONDER
Have I allowed the voice of human affection, family expectations, or a desire for comfort to stop me from taking the bold steps of faith God has put in my heart?
ACTION POINTS
1: The Voice Audit: Think about the major spiritual goals or callings you have stepped back from. Identify if you did so because a loved one expressed fear or disapproval.
2: The Davidic Turn: Practice the wisdom of David. When well-meaning family members speak words of fear or limitation, do not argue with them. Peacefully turn your focus back to God’s promises.
3: The Discernment Prayer: Dedicate time today to pray for an uncompromised spirit of discernment, so you can instantly recognize when human love is being used to dilute your spiritual assignment.
VI. THE CORE PRAYER
Oh Lord God Almighty, the Great Redeemer and Guide of our souls! We stand before You on this Thursday morning, June 11, 2026, thanking You for the gift of family and loved ones. Lord, we ask for an immediate upgrade in our spiritual discernment. Deliver us from the trap of carnal sentimentality.
Give us the unshakeable courage to look past human emotions whenever they contradict Your holy counsel for our lives. Father, help us to honor our loved ones without ever honoring their fears above Your commands. Let Your perfect will be done in us, through us, and around us, completely unchecked by human limitations, in the mighty, matchless, and triumphant Name of Jesus Christ, Amen!
VII. FURTHER STUDY
Luke 14:26: “If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.” (Note: “Hate” here means to love them less in comparison to your supreme devotion to Christ).
Galatians 1:15–16: “But when it pleased God… To reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood.”
Proverbs 3:5–6: “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
HYMNAL: GUIDE ME, O THOU GREAT JEHOVAH
1. Guide me, O my great Redeemer,
pilgrim through this barren land;
I am weak, but you are mighty;
hold me with your powerful hand.
Bread of heaven, bread of heaven,
feed me now and evermore,
feed me now and evermore.
2. Open now the crystal fountain,
where the healing waters flow.
Let the fire and cloudy pillar
lead me all my journey through.
Strong Deliverer, strong Deliverer,
ever be my strength and shield,
ever be my strength and shield.
3. When I tread the verge of Jordan,
bid my anxious fears subside.
Death of death, and hell’s Destruction,
land me safe on Canaan’s side.
Songs of praises, songs of praises
I will ever sing to you,
I will ever sing to you.
PROPHETIC DECREE
I decree and declare that every weapon of emotional blackmail, carnal discouragement, and human sympathy deployed by the enemy to paralyze your destiny is permanently neutralized by the fire of the Holy Ghost! I command your spiritual ears to be opened to hear only the counsel of the Most High God. You will no longer sacrifice your calling on the altar of human expectations or family comfort zones.
I decree that you receive the supernatural boldness of David to face your giants, completely unstopped by the mocking voices of any Eliab in your family tree. Sickness is completely foreign to your body, lack is shattered from your home, and you are stepping into a season of explosive territorial takeovers. You will finish your course with joy, your path will shine brighter and brighter, and you will manifest the uncompromised power, flawless victory, and absolute authority of the New Creation throughout this week, in the mighty, triumphant, and matchless name of Jesus Christ! Amen! Hallelujah!
