When a believer falls into this mindset, they view every opportunity to give as a potential loss rather than a supernatural seed for future multiplication. Look at the structural pressures hitting the Macedonian church: they were going through a “great trial of affliction” and living in “deep poverty.” By all human standards, these people were the ones who needed financial aid. They had every valid economic excuse to hold back every coin, close their hands, and ask for support.
Yet, because the raw grace of God was working in their hearts, their internal joy rose completely above their difficult external circumstances. Their deep physical lack did not lead to complaints or panic; instead, it overflowed into an incredible wave of generosity.
The Holy Spirit records that the Macedonians did not wait to be asked, begged, or persuaded to give. They were “willing of themselves.” In fact, they turned the tables on the apostles by “praying us with much intreaty that we would receive the gift.” They literally begged Paul for the privilege, the honor, and the covenant right to participate in sending financial relief to the suffering saints in Jerusalem.
How could people living in poverty beg to give away their limited resources? The secret is revealed in verse 5: “And this they did, not as we hoped, but first gave their own selves to the Lord, and unto us by the will of God.” This is the vital foundation of all true giving. The Macedonians did not just give their money; they had already given their entire lives completely to God. When your life is fully surrendered to Jesus Christ, your material possessions lose their grip over your heart, and your hand opens freely to distribute heaven’s blessings.

We must preserve every single drop of honey, every almond, and every piece of currency we have left!” But Jacob, operating by faith, understood that a seed must leave your hand if you want a harvest to enter your house. He went into his private storehouse and packed up the absolute best fruits of the land—balm, honey, fine spices, precious myrrh, choice nuts, and almonds. He then commanded his sons to take double money in their hands.
Jacob had no idea that the mysterious ruler ruling over Egypt was actually his long-lost son, Joseph, whom he had mourned for decades. He thought he was simply sending a desperate gift to a strict foreign official.
But God, who watches over every seed sown in faith, used that act of generosity to orchestrate a beautiful family restoration. The famine could not stop Jacob’s seed, and that seed ultimately unlocked the favor of the highest palace in the world, preserving the entire lineage of Israel.
