THE DANGER OF THE UNFINISHED STORY – AVOIDING HASTY CONCLUSIONS

I. THE ANATOMY OF A MISCONCEPTION

As we conclude the month of April 2026, the Holy Spirit is shining a searchlight on one of the most destructive habits of the human mind: The tendency to jump to hasty conclusions. We live in an “instant” age—instant news, instant messaging, and unfortunately, instant judgment. We see a fragment of a situation and, with the speed of a lightning bolt, we construct an entire narrative that may be miles away from the truth.

In our Fire Scripture, we see this play out in the life of the Apostle Paul. He was being led into a castle, under arrest and surrounded by chaos. The chief captain, looking at Paul through the lens of political anxiety and prejudice, had already decided who Paul was. He didn’t see an Apostle; he didn’t see a scholar; he saw a criminal. His question in verse 38 is dripping with assumption: “Art not thou that Egyptian…?” Because Paul “looked the part” of a troublemaker in that moment of uproar, the captain assigned him a violent history and a murderous identity. Had Paul not spoken Greek—an intellectual “reset” for the captain—he might have been treated as a common bandit and silenced forever. How many people are we “silencing” today because we have already decided who they are before they open their mouths?

II. THE HIGH COST OF ASSUMPTION

Hasty conclusions are not just mental errors; they are spiritual traps that carry devastating real-world consequences. The devotional points out that many relationships, marriages, and businesses in 2026 are currently in ruins, not because of a lack of love, but because of a lack of verification.

1. The Tragedy of Impulse

Consider the harrowing story of the husband who reacted to his wife’s late arrival with a slap. He didn’t ask “Where were you?” or “Are you okay?” He allowed his suspicion to judge her instantly. His hasty conclusion resulted in a physical altercation that led to her death. The truth—that she was at the clinic caring for her mother—came only when it was too late to offer an apology. This is the extreme end of Proverbs 18:13, which warns that answering a matter before hearing it is “folly and shame.”

2. The Hidden Treasure

Then there is the story of the son and the Bible. He saw a book; his father saw a vehicle. Because the son concluded that the gift was “just a religious book,” he threw away the very car key he had been praying for. Many of us are throwing away our “car keys”—our breakthroughs, our divine connections, and our miracles—simply because the “packaging” doesn’t match our hasty expectations.

III. THE BIBLICAL FILTER: SWIFT TO HEAR

The Apostle James provides the perfect antidote for the 2026 mind in James 1:19–20. He commands us to be:

Swift to Hear: We must be aggressive about gathering facts. We should be “information-hungry” but “judgment-starved.”

Slow to Speak: We must put a “lock” on our opinions until the full story is told.

Slow to Wrath: Anger is almost always the byproduct of a hasty conclusion. We get angry because we assume someone intended to hurt us, ignore us, or cheat us.

The Bible is clear: the “wrath of man” does not work the righteousness of God. When you react out of a hasty conclusion, you are operating in the flesh, and the flesh can never produce a God-glorifying result.

IV. THE DIPLOMACY OF THE SOUL

Why did the chief captain give Paul “licence” to speak in verse 40? Because Paul responded to a false accusation with a calm, factual defense of his citizenship and origin. He didn’t trade insults; he provided information.

To avoid hasty conclusions, we must practice the Benefit of the Doubt.

1: Stop the Tape: When you feel an assumption rising, consciously tell yourself, “I do not have all the facts yet.”

2: Ask, Don’t Accuse: Instead of saying, “You did this because you don’t care,” ask, “Can you help me understand why this happened?”

3: Read the Label: Don’t throw away the “packet” of a relationship or an opportunity just because the first few lines of the story are difficult to read.

V. COMPREHENSIVE Q&A: BREAKING THE HABIT OF JUDGMENT

Q1: What if my ‘intuition’ tells me someone is lying? Isn’t that different from a hasty conclusion?

Answer: Intuition should lead to investigation, not execution. Even if you feel something is wrong, the Scriptural way is to “hear the matter.” If God, who knows all things, still gives us the opportunity to speak before He judges, who are we to do otherwise?

Q2: How do I handle someone who has already made a hasty conclusion about me?

Answer: Follow Paul’s example in Acts 21. Don’t be defensive. Speak the “language” they understand (Paul spoke Greek to the captain and Hebrew to the crowd). Let your character and your facts speak for you. Truth has a way of silencing assumptions over time.

Q3: Is it possible to ‘un-ring’ the bell once a hasty conclusion has caused damage?

Answer: While some consequences are permanent (like the death of the wife in the story), many can be healed through radical humility. If you have judged someone wrongly, go to them, confess your folly, and ask for forgiveness. Pride is the fuel of hasty conclusions; humility is the fire extinguisher.

VI. THE 2026 PROPHETIC CHALLENGE: CULTIVATING A PATIENT SPIRIT

As we conclude this month, the world is more divided than ever. People are being “canceled” based on snippets of video and out-of-context quotes. As a member of the Foursquare family, you are called to be an oasis of wisdom.

• Will you be the one who waits for the full report?

• Will you be the one who opens the Bible to find the key before you toss it aside?

• Will you be “the chief captain” who is willing to change his mind when new facts emerge?

Don’t let a 30-second assumption destroy a 30-year relationship.

VII. REFLECTION & PROPHETIC ALIGNMENT

THOUGHT TO PONDER:

Is there someone I have “cast into the castle” of my disapproval based on a story I haven’t fully heard? Am I holding onto a “shameful” conclusion because I am too proud to admit I was wrong?

ACTION POINT:

1: The Fact-Check: Think of one situation where you are currently angry or upset. Ask yourself: “Do I have 100% of the facts, or am I filling in the blanks with my own fears?”

2: The Open Door: If you have been ignoring someone based on an assumption, send a message today: “I realized I may have misunderstood things. Can we talk?”

3: The James 1:19 Practice: For the next 24 hours, commit to asking three questions for every one opinion you state.

PRAYER:

Dear Lord, I thank You for Your patience with me. I confess that I have often been like the chief captain—quick to judge and slow to understand. Forgive me for the relationships I have bruised with my hasty conclusions. Holy Spirit, teach me to be swift to hear and slow to speak. Give me a disciplined mind that seeks the truth before it releases wrath. Help me to give others the benefit of the doubt, just as You give it to me daily. Let my life be a reflection of Your wisdom and grace, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

PROPHETIC DECREE:

I decree today that the spirit of “folly and shame” is broken over your mind! You shall not throw away your car keys because of the packaging of the Bible. I command every confusion and misunderstanding in your home and business to be cleared away by the light of God’s Word! I decree that you are receiving a “patient spirit.” You shall not make mistakes that lead to regret. Because you choose to hear before you answer, the Lord shall give you the “tongue of the learned” and make you a peacemaker in your generation, in the mighty Name of Jesus!
