OPEN HEAVENS DAILY DEVOTIONAL
PRAYERS FOR YOUR NATION
MESSAGE BY: Pastor E. A. Adeboye
MEMORISE: “Rejoice, O ye nations, with his people: for he will avenge the blood of his servants, and will render vengeance to his adversaries, and will be merciful unto his land, and to his people.” — Deuteronomy 32:43
I. THE BELIEVER’S RESPONSIBILITY TO THE NATION
Welcome to Thursday, October 1, 2026—a milestone day marking Independence Day and the dawn of a new month!
As citizens of earth and ambassadors of heaven, believers carry a sacred, non-negotiable spiritual responsibility toward their homeland. Too often, citizens resort to complaining, criticizing leadership, and despairing over national challenges. Yet, Scripture makes it abundantly clear that the ultimate transformation of any society begins on the knees of intercessors:
The Power of Intercession: In
1 Timothy 2:1–2, Apostle Paul exhorts that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings, and for all that are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable
life in all godliness and honesty.
The Promise of Divine Mercy: As highlighted in
Deuteronomy 32:43,
God pledges to show mercy to His land and His people, executing divine justice against oppressors while restoring peace to those who call upon Him.
The Catalyst for Healing: When a nation experiences economic turbulence, social unrest, or leadership instability, God’s directive remains clear: His people must humble themselves, pray, seek His face, and turn from wicked ways so He can heal their land (2 Chronicles 7:14).
Today is set aside as a dedicated day of national intercession. As we celebrate our independence, let us raise a mantle of prayer for our land, trusting the Shepherd of Israel to shine His face upon us and bring total restoration.
II. CRYING OUT TO THE SHEPHERD OF ISRAEL
In today’s Bible reading (
Psalm 80:1–7), the Psalmist offers a heart-wrenching, urgent
prayer on behalf of a nation experiencing severe distress, economic hardship, and external reproach:
“Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, thou that leadest Joseph like a flock; thou that dwellest between the cherubims, shine forth… Turn us again, O God, and cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved.”
This ancient cry mirrors the contemporary reality of many nations today:
The Bread of Tears: The Psalmist laments that the people have been fed with the “bread of tears” and given tears to drink in great measure (Psalm 80:5). Economic inflation, insecurity, and social strife often leave citizens feeling abandoned.
A Strife to Neighbors: Unstable governance and insecurity turn a nation into an object of mockery among neighboring countries (Psalm 80:6).
The Threefold Refrain: Three distinct times in Psalm 80 (verses 3, 7, and 19), the intercessor repeats the vital key to national revival: “Turn us again, O God of hosts, and cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved.”
III. FULFILLING PROPHETIC DESTINIES
However, when God’s light shines:
Darkness is Dispelled: Confusion, policy stagnation, and systemic corruption are exposed and dismantled.
Youth Empowerment: The younger generation—the backbone of any country—is delivered from youthful lusts, crime, and cyber-fraud, rising instead as innovators, upright leaders, and economic pioneers.
Economic Prosperity: The breath of God’s grace blows across agriculture, technology, commerce, and manufacturing, turning barren economic landscapes into fruitful fields.
Let us stand in the gap today with total faith,
knowing that the God who answers prayer is ready to heal our land, restore peace, and fulfill every positive prophecy spoken over our nation!

mighty hand of power that has sustained, preserved, and kept us together through all the trials and challenges over the years!

10: Empowerment and Preservation of the Youth: Father, please strengthen, protect, and guide our youths. Let our
young men and women rise to take their rightful places in every sector of the global economy, delivered from youthful lusts and destructive vices, in Jesus’ name!
11: Total Defeat of Satanic Agendas: Father, please destroy every evil scheme of the devil to plunge my nation into sorrow, war, famine, or bloodshed. Let Your divine joy fill this land, making us fruitful and renowned globally, in Jesus’ name!
12: Personal Intercession for the Homeland: [Take quality time to pray your personal, specific petitions for your nation—covering your local community, state, national economy, peace, and security.]
V. BIBLE TEXT SUMMARY & FURTHER STUDY
Bible Text Summary: Psalm 80:1–7
The Psalmist approaches God as the Shepherd of Israel who leads Joseph like a flock and sits enthroned above the cherubim, pleading for Him to manifest His power before Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh to bring salvation. In a repeating chorus, the writer cries,
“Turn us again, O God, and cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved.” The passage vividly depicts the nation’s severe suffering, questioning how long the Lord of hosts will remain angry against His people’s
prayers while feeding them with tears and causing neighboring nations to laugh in mockery among themselves.

VI. BIBLE READING PLAN
1-Year Bible Reading Plan
Malachi 1–4
Malachi 1: The Lord declares His sovereign love for Israel, contrasting His election of Jacob with His judgment upon Edom (Esau). God rebukes the priests for despising His Name by offering defiled bread, blind, lame, and sick animals upon His altar—sacrifices they would never dare present to a human governor.
God declares that His Name shall be great among the Gentiles from the rising to the setting of the sun, cursing the deceiver who vows a clean sacrifice but offers a blemished animal to the Great King.
Malachi 2: God issues a stern commandment to the priests: if they do not lay it to heart to
give glory to His Name, He will send a curse upon them, corrupt their seed, and spread dung upon their faces.
God recalls His ancient covenant of life and peace with Levi, who walked with Him in truth and turned many away from iniquity. God rebukes Judah for treachery against one another, for marrying the daughters of foreign gods, and for
breaking the covenant of marriage through unfaithful divorce, declaring:
“For the LORD, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away.”
Malachi 3: God announces the coming of His messenger to prepare the way, followed by the sudden arrival of the Lord to His temple. He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, purifying the sons of Levi so they may offer righteous sacrifices. God challenges the nation regarding their economic disobedience:
“Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me… In tithes and offerings.” God issues a challenge to bring all tithes into the storehouse, promising to
open the windows of heaven, rebuke the devourer for their sakes, and make them a delightsome land.
Malachi 4: Malachi describes the coming
Day of the LORD, burning like an oven, wherein all the proud and wicked shall be burned as stubble. But unto those who fear His Name,
“shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall.” God commands Israel to remember the
Law of Moses given at Horeb and closes the Old Testament canon with a powerful messianic promise: He will send
Elijah the prophet before the great and dreadful day of the Lord to turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest the land be smitten with a curse.
VII. HYMNAL 22: SWEET HOUR OF PRAYER
Sweet hour of prayer! Sweet hour of prayer!
That calls me from a world of care,
And bids me at my Father’s throne
Make all my wants and wishes known;
In seasons of distress and grief,
My soul has often found relief,
And oft escaped the tempter’s snare
By thy return, sweet hour of prayer.
Sweet hour of prayer! Sweet hour of prayer!
Thy wings shall my petition bear
To Him whose truth and faithfulness
Engage the waiting soul to bless;
And since He bids me seek His face,
Believe His Word and trust His grace,
I’ll cast on Him my every care,
And wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer.
Sweet hour of prayer! Sweet hour of prayer!
May I thy consolation share,
Till from Mount Pisgah’s lofty height
I view my home and take my flight;
This robe of flesh I’ll drop, and rise
To seize the everlasting prize,
And shout while passing through the air,
Farewell, farewell, sweet hour of prayer!
