HE WHO THINKS HE STANDS – PART II

I. THE SELF-COMMENDATION TRAP: WHY GIFTS ARE NOT PROOF OF APPROVAL
Yesterday, we began examining the deadly hazard of spiritual overconfidence, seeing how easily a believer can slip from standing securely in Christ into catastrophic compromise. Today, in Part II of “He Who Thinks He Stands,” we advance to a deeper level of self-examination: the dangerous practice of evaluating your spiritual standing by your own standards rather than God’s divine mirror.

It is one thing to begin standing for Jesus Christ, but it is an entirely different matter to keep standing for Him continuously until the end.
To finish your spiritual race strong, you desperately need divine assistance (Jude 1:24), and you must consistently inquire from the Almighty to know the true status of your heart.
Apostle Paul highlights a profound spiritual truth in 2 Corinthians 10:18:
“For not he that commendeth himself is approved, but whom the Lord commendeth.” — 2 Corinthians 10:18
Many people in the body of Christ today are guilty of commending themselves. They create self-serving benchmarks of righteousness and conclude that because they attend services, give tithes, or preach powerful sermons, God is pleased with them.
Yet, in truth, some who are busy clapping for themselves have already fallen in the spirit!
II. THE TRAGEDY OF THE LAST DAY: MATTHEW 7:21-23 EXPOSED
Our Bible reading today (Matthew 7:21–23) contains one of the most sobering and terrifying warnings in all of sacred Scripture.
Jesus explicitly warns that on the final Judgment Day, thousands of individuals will approach Heaven’s gates with bold confidence, fully expecting an enthusiastic welcome, only to experience eternal rejection!

- "Lord, we prophesied!" - "I NEVER knew you!"
- "We cast out demons!" - "Depart from me!"
- "We did many wonderful works!" - "Ye that work iniquity."
Look closely at the defense these individuals present:

They performed prophesies in Jesus’ Name.

They cast out evil spirits in Jesus’ Name.

They executed dynamic, supernatural works in Jesus’ Name.
Notice what Jesus does not say: He does not deny that they performed these miracles or prophesied!
Charismatic gifts, powerful demonstrations, and public ministerial success are not infallible proofs of a righteous life. A person can operate in spiritual gifts via the authority of Jesus’ Name while living in secret moral corruption!
Because they evaluated themselves by their spiritual accomplishments rather than inward purity and total obedience to the Father’s will, Jesus’ final decree to them will be heartbreaking:
“And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.” — Matthew 7:23
God’s foundation stands sure, having this seal: “The Lord knoweth them that are his” (2 Timothy 2:19). He will never allow anyone to build spiritual falsehood upon His holy foundation.
III. THE THRONE ROOM REVELATION: PROPHET ISAIAH’S LESSON
Consider the experience of Prophet Isaiah in Isaiah 6:1–5.
Before King Uzziah died, Isaiah was already an active, recognized prophet in Israel. He had preached powerful sermons, pronounced woes upon rebellious sinners, and likely assumed he was standing tall in God’s favor.

However, the moment the Lord opened Isaiah’s eyes to behold the heavenly throne room—seeing the holy Seraphim covering their faces and crying “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts”—Isaiah’s self-assessment disintegrated instantly!
He didn’t boast of his prophetic office or past sermons. Instead, he fell down and cried:
“Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.” — Isaiah 6:5
Until you measure yourself against the absolute holiness of God, you will always be tempted to overestimate your spiritual standing!
IV. PRACTICAL HEART EXAMINATIONS: GOD’S WORD AS A SPIRITUAL MIRROR
Beloved, never assume you are standing securely in Christ. You must continuously weigh your daily motives, choices, and reactions against the unyielding standard of God’s Word.

Do you flare up in anger Do you bask in pride, Do you demand service,
when addressed without or redirect glory to or humble yourself like
"due respect"? the Giver? Jesus to serve others?
Ask yourself these four diagnostic questions today:
1: How do you react when disrespected? When someone addresses you without the title, honor, or deference you feel you deserve, do you flare up in carnal rage and pride, or do you exhibit the gentle humility of Christ?
2: How do you handle praise? When people applaud your talents, preaching, singing, or achievements, do you secretly gorge yourself on their compliments, or are you quick to sincerely redirect all glory to God, the true Giver of every good gift?
3: What is your posture toward service? When an opportunity to serve arises, do you excuse yourself because of your rank, expecting others to serve you, or do you quickly wash feet and serve lower-ranking brethren as Jesus did (John 13:14)?
4: Who sits on the throne of your daily choices? Do you demand to have your way all the time, or do you yield control to the Holy Spirit, even when it conflicts with your personal preferences?
Apostle James urges us in James 1:23–25 not to be passive hearers of the Word who look at their natural faces in a mirror and immediately walk away forgetting what manner of men they were.
The Word of God is your spiritual mirror! When it reveals a blemish, a proud attitude, or an ungodly reaction, do not rationalize it—correct it immediately through genuine repentance!
V. PRAYER POINT
Father, please search my heart today, reveal any hidden area of spiritual pride or compromise, and help me to stand firm in You until the very end.
VI. BIBLE TEXT SUMMARY: MATTHEW 7:21-23
Jesus explicitly clarifies that entry into the Kingdom of Heaven is not guaranteed by outward verbal declarations of “Lord, Lord,” but by active obedience to the will of God the Father. He reveals that on the final Judgment Day, many individuals will appeal to Him based on charismatic ministerial exploits, reminding Him that they prophesied, cast out demons, and performed miraculous works using His Name. Despite these impressive displays, Jesus will publicly disown them, declaring that He never knew them intimately as true disciples and commanding them to depart from His presence because they practiced lawlessness and iniquity.
VII. BIBLE IN ONE YEAR SUMMARY: JEREMIAH 4–5
Jeremiah 4: God issues an urgent call for Israel to return to Him with sincerity, instructing them to break up their fallow ground and circumcise their hearts rather than relying on outward ritual. God warns of an imminent, devastating judgment approaching from the north—like a scorching wind and swift clouds—that will lay waste to Judah’s cities because of her persistent rebellion. Jeremiah expresses deep emotional anguish, crying out as he foresees the total devastation of the land, which resembles a desolate, void wilderness with darkened heavens, trembling mountains, and deserted cities.
Jeremiah 5: God issues a startling challenge: if Jeremiah can find even a single person in the streets of Jerusalem who executes justice and seeks truth, He will pardon the entire city. However, Jeremiah discovers that both the poor and the great leaders have completely broken the yoke of God’s Law. Because the nation has hardened its face like rock, refused correction, and foolishly declared that no evil will come upon them, God decrees that a distant, ancient nation with a strange language will execute His judgment. Yet, in His mercy, God promises He will not make a complete end of them, rebuking them for abandoning the God who provides autumn and spring rains while their sins withhold good things from them.
VIII. HYMN 8: I NEED THEE EVERY HOUR
1. I need Thee ev’ry hour,
Most gracious Lord;
No tender voice like Thine
Can peace afford.
I need Thee, oh, I need Thee;
Ev’ry hour I need Thee;
Oh, bless me now, my Saviour,
I come to Thee.
2. I need Thee ev’ry hour,
Stay Thou nearby;
Temptations lose their pow’r
When Thou art nigh.
3. I need Thee ev’ry hour,
In joy or pain;
Come quickly and abide,
Or life is vain.
4. I need Thee ev’ry hour,
Teach me Thy will;
And Thy rich promise.
In me fulfill.
5. I need Thee every hour
Most Holy One;
Oh, make me Thine indeed,
Thou blessed Son!
IX. PROPHETIC DECREE
I decree and declare that on this Tuesday, August 4, 2026, the Holy Spirit exposes every hidden area of self-righteousness, pride, and spiritual deception in your heart!
You will not evaluate yourself by human standards or ministerial titles!
I receive for you the grace of perpetual self-examination, genuine humility, and instant repentance whenever God’s Word exposes a blemish!
You will not rely on past spiritual exploits or spiritual gifts as a substitute for inward holiness!
The Lord who began a good work in you will uphold you by His mighty hand, shielding you from falling!
On that final day, you will not hear “Depart from me,” but rather “Well done, good and faithful servant!”
You will run your race with endurance, maintain your standing in Christ, and reign with Him in eternal glory, in the mighty and matchless Name of Jesus Christ! Amen! Hallelujah!
