AVOIDING TEMPTATION
MESSAGE BY: Pastor E. A. Adeboye
MEMORISE: “Abstain from all appearance of evil.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:22
I. THE UNIVERSAL REALITY OF TEMPTATION: NO ONE IS IMMUNE
Every human being walking the face of the earth will encounter temptation at various points in their spiritual journey. It is not an indicator of spiritual weakness to be tempted; rather, it is a inescapable reality of living in a fallen world.
Even our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, was subjected to intense, targeted temptation by the devil during His earthly ministry. Hebrews 4:15 reminds us that Jesus “was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.”
If the adversary had the audacity to tempt the sinless Son of God in the wilderness, then no mortal man or woman—regardless of their spiritual pedigree, ministerial title, years in the faith, or height of anointed authority—is above temptation!
However, while you cannot prevent the devil from throwing fiery darts of suggestion across your path, you possess complete divine authority to avoid placing yourself in harm’s way! Many believers suffer catastrophic moral falls not because Satan was impossibly powerful, but because they foolishly presumed they were too spiritually mature to flee environments, relationships, and situations that harbored temptation.
II. THE ANATOMY OF TEMPTATION: FROM LUST TO DEATH
In James 1:12–16, the Holy Spirit lays bare the internal mechanics of how temptation operates within the human soul:
Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. Do not err, my beloved brethren.” — James 1:13–16
Notice the explicit stages of this destructive spiritual progression:
1: Unmortified Internal Lust: God never entices anyone with evil. Temptation finds its landing strip on the platform of unmortified internal desires (lust).
2: Enticement & Bait: The enemy identifies these unmortified areas and crafts custom-made traps to draw you out of spiritual safety.
3: Conception & Sin: When an individual entertains the enticement in their mind and will, lust conceives, birthing actual sin.
3: Final Execution (Death): Sin never remains stagnant. When it matures, its final product is spiritual, emotional, relational, and eternal death (Romans 6:23).
To choose life, you must actively mortify—put to death—the deeds of the flesh through the power of the Holy Spirit (Colossians 3:5, Romans 8:13).
III. THE BIRD AND THE NEST: PRACTICAL WISDOM FOR DAILY PURITY
An ancient spiritual proverb states that temptation is like a bird. You may not be able to stop a bird from flying over your head, but you can certainly stop it from building a nest in your hair!
If you allow the bird of evil thoughts to build a nest on your head, it is only a matter of time before your entire life is soiled by its droppings.
This requires total honesty with yourself. You must intentionally avoid people, places, and activities that feed your fleshy vulnerabilities:
Financial Integrity: If a man knows he struggles with financial discipline or covetousness, he should not accept a role that puts him in unmonitored custody of church or corporate funds until that lust has been thoroughly mortified by the Holy Spirit.
Moral Safeguards: Years ago, when some ministers under my supervision acquired motorcycles, I explicitly instructed them never to carry female passengers. Why? Because close, continuous physical contact on a motorcycle can easily sow subtle seeds in the hearts of both riders that could germinate into moral failure down the road!
What precautions look like “over-strictness” to the worldly mind are actually life-saving spiritual boundaries for the child of God!
IV. RUN FOR YOUR LIFE: THE LAW OF 1 THESSALONIANS 5:22
Our memorise verse delivers a short, crystal-clear command from the Holy Spirit:
“Abstain from all appearance of evil.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:22
Notice the Apostle Paul did not say “Abstain from actual evil only.” He said abstain from the very appearance of evil!
When Joseph was confronted by Potiphar’s wife in Genesis 39:12, he didn’t stay behind to negotiate, pray in tongues, or argue theology with her. The Bible records that he dropped his garment in her hands and fled!
When you sense the presence or scent of temptation in a conversation, a private chat room, a business deal, or a solitary setting, do not negotiate—FLEE IMMEDIATELY! Running away from temptation is not cowardice; it is divine wisdom in action.

VI. BIBLE TEXT SUMMARY: JAMES 1:12-16
Apostle James reveals the spiritual dynamics of temptation and endurance. He pronounces a blessing on the believer who steadfastly endures trials, promising that after passing the test, they will receive the crown of life promised to those who love God. He firmly dismisses the notion that God tempts anyone with evil, explaining that temptation arises when an individual is drawn away and enticed by their own internal lusts. When lust is entertained, it conceives and yields sin, and sin, upon reaching maturity, results in death. James concludes with an urgent plea for believers not to be deceived regarding the true origin of sin and temptation.
VII. BIBLE IN ONE YEAR SUMMARY: ISAIAH 53–56
Isaiah 53: The supreme Old Testament prophecy detailing the vicarious suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Messiah is described as a man of sorrows, despised and rejected by men. He bore our griefs, carried our sorrows, and was wounded for our transgressions and bruised for our iniquities. The chastisement of our peace was upon Him, and with His stripes we are healed. God laid on Him the iniquity of us all, making Him a guilt offering, yet promising that He would see His seed, prolong His days, and divide the spoil with the strong because He poured out His soul unto death.
Isaiah 54: God calls barren Zion to sing and enlarge her tent curtains because her children will be more numerous than those of the married woman. The Lord reassures Israel of His everlasting love, declaring that though He hid His face for a brief moment in anger, He will gather her with everlasting mercy. God establishes a covenant of peace as unshakeable as Noah’s flood covenant, promising that no weapon formed against her shall prosper and every tongue that rises against her in judgment shall be condemned.
Isaiah 55: An expansive gospel invitation calling everyone who thirsts to come to the waters and buy wine and milk without money and without price. God urges the wicked to forsake their way and the unrighteous man his thoughts, promising abundant pardon. He highlights the vast difference between human thinking and His divine nature (“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD”), affirming that His spoken Word will never return to Him void but will accomplish everything He sent it to do.
Isaiah 56: God commands His people to keep justice and practice righteousness as His salvation draws near. He promises special blessings to foreigners and eunuchs who keep His Sabbath and hold fast to His covenant, declaring that His house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations. The chapter closes with a sharp rebuke against Israel’s blind watchmen and greedy shepherds who indulge in alcohol, ignore their duties, and leave the flock vulnerable to spiritual beasts.
VIII. HYMN 31: YIELD NOT TO TEMPTATION

For yielding is sin;
Each victory will help you
Some other to win;
Fight manfully onward,
Dark passions subdue;
Look ever to Jesus,
He’ll carry you through.

2. Shun evil companions,
Bad language disdain;
God’s name hold in reverence,
Nor take it in vain;

IX. PROPHETIC DECREE
I decree and declare that on this Thursday, July 30, 2026, the Holy Spirit fills you with supernatural discernment to spot every subtle trap of temptation from afar!
Every secret, unmortified desire of the flesh lingering in your soul is completely consumed by the holy fire of God today!
You receive the grace and courage to flee every appearance of evil without compromise or delay!
I decree that you will not stumble into moral failure, financial corruption, or spiritual ruin!
The traps set by the adversary to derail your destiny, ministry, marriage, and family are permanently dismantled!
You walk in absolute holiness, moral integrity, and unbroken victory, crowned with the glorious favor of Almighty God, in the matchless Name of Jesus Christ! Amen! Hallelujah!
