GRACE FOR LIVING DEVOTIONAL: A THEOLOGICAL EXPLORATION

COMPELLING SIGNS AND WONDERS – THE DIVINE ARGUMENT

MESSAGE BY: FOURSQUARE GOSPEL CHURCH IN NIGERIA

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: 2 SAMUEL 17–18; LUKE 21:1–19

FIRE SCRIPTURE: JOHN 12:9–16

KEY VERSE: “Because on account of him many of the Jews went away and believed in Jesus.” — (JOHN 12:11)

I. THE LANGUAGE OF THE OMNIPOTENT

As we dwell in the presence of the Lord on this Sunday, April 26, 2026, the Holy Spirit is teaching us about the strategic necessity of Compelling Signs and Wonders. In a world dominated by empirical data, intellectual skepticism, and spiritual apathy, signs and wonders serve as God’s “loudspeaker.” They are gestures through which He communicates His omnipotent power and undeniable presence to a distracted generation.

A “compelling” sign is not just an interesting event; it is an intervention that leaves the observer with no logical exit other than belief. It is the divine “breaking through” the veil of unbelief, shattering the arguments of the hard-hearted, and bringing about a state of acknowledgment and submission to the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

II. THE LAZARUS EFFECT: WHEN SILENCE IS NO LONGER AN OPTION

Our Bible reading in John 12 occurs in the aftermath of the resurrection of Lazarus. This was not a “hidden” miracle; it was a public disruption of the laws of nature.

1. The Magnetism of the Miracle

Verse 9 tells us that the crowds came not just for Jesus, but to see Lazarus. Lazarus had become a living trophy of God’s power. He was the “evidence” that demanded a verdict. When God performs a compelling wonder in your life, you become a “spectacle” of His glory. People will travel from afar—not to hear your eloquent speech—but to see the “Lazarus” that God has raised in your finances, your health, or your family.

2. The Panic of the Enemy

The reaction of the chief priests was telling: they consulted to put Lazarus to death as well (John 12:10). Why? Because a compelling sign is dangerous to the kingdom of darkness. It bypasses the mind and speaks directly to the soul. The enemy is not afraid of your religious labels; he is terrified of the evidence of God’s power in your life.

3. The Result: Mass Conversion

The Key Verse reveals the ultimate goal of these wonders: “Because on account of him many of the Jews went away and believed in Jesus.” Lazarus didn’t have to preach a sermon; his mere existence was a sermon. Compelling signs end the debate. They make the “impossible” so visible that the “stubborn” have no choice but to bow.

III. THE MIGHTY HAND IN SCRIPTURAL HISTORY

Throughout the Bible, God has used compelling signs to deal with “Pharaoh-like” resistance.

Exodus: The Stretched Hand: God told Moses in Exodus 3:19, “I am sure that the king of Egypt will not let you go, no, not by a mighty hand.” There are some situations—and some people—that will never yield to polite persuasion. They require the “hand of wonders” to strike until the gates are forced open.

Damascus: The Arrest of an Enemy: Saul of Tarsus was an intellectual giant and a religious zealot who hated the Church. He wasn’t convinced by the preaching of the early Christians; he was apprehended by a light from heaven that struck him blind (Acts 9). A compelling wonder turned the Church’s greatest persecutor into its greatest Apostle.

John 4:48: Jesus Himself acknowledged the human condition when He said, “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will by no means believe.” This isn’t a rebuke of faith; it is an acknowledgement that for some, the miracle is the doorway to the message.

IV. THE 2026 MANDATE: STEPPING UP THE FERVENT CRY

In our lives, families, and neighborhoods today, there are still “Jewry” and “Pharaohs” who doubt and refuse the Gospel. The intellectual pride of the 21st century often acts as a wall against the Word of God.

1. Evangelism with Power

We must move beyond “dry” evangelism. The early Church prayed for signs and wonders to accompany the Word (Acts 4:30). As believers in 2026, we need to step up our evangelistic activities and combine them with fervent, “fire-calling” prayers. We need to ask God for the kind of miracles that will compel our unsaved relatives and skeptical colleagues to acknowledge that Jesus is Lord.

2. Being the Instrument

Are you ready to be an instrument of revival? To be a “Lazarus” in your neighborhood? A compelling wonder is not just for the benefit of the believer; it is a tool for the harvest. When God heals the “incurable” in your family, he is using you to reach everyone who knew about the sickness.

V. COMPREHENSIVE Q&A: NAVIGATING THE SUPERNATURAL

Q1: Is it ‘wrong’ to want signs and wonders?

Answer: Not if the motive is the glory of Christ and the salvation of souls. We don’t seek signs as “entertainment,” but as “evidence.” The Jews in John 12 believed because they saw the evidence. We should desire God’s power to be manifest so that men might be saved.

Q2: How do I ‘call down’ God’s power in my family?

Answer: Through the “Damascus Road” type of prayer. Pray that God will “apprehend” the stubborn members of your family. Ask Him for a sign that they cannot explain away. Combine your prayer with the “goodwill” service we discussed yesterday.

Q3: What if I feel ‘ordinary’? Can God use me for a ‘compelling’ wonder?

Answer: Lazarus was “dead”—you can’t get more ordinary or helpless than that! The power is not in the vessel; it is in the One who speaks to the vessel. Your job is simply to be available and “glorified” in Him as mentioned in verse 16.

VI. REFLECTION & PROPHETIC ALIGNMENT

THOUGHT TO PONDER:

Is there someone in my life who is so “hard-hearted” that only a miracle can reach them? Am I willing to pray specifically for a compelling sign to break their unbelief?

ACTION POINT:

1: Identify the ‘Pharaoh’: Name the situation or person that has refused to bow to Christ.

2: The Lazarus Cry: Spend 15 minutes today asking God to manifest a sign in that specific area. Ask for the “incredible” to happen.

3: Prepare for the Crowd: When God answers, be ready to point everyone back to Jesus, just as Lazarus’s life pointed to the Master.

PRAYER:

O Lord, the God of Lazarus and the God of the Damascus Road, I thank You for Your omnipotent power. I ask today for compelling signs and wonders in my life, my family, and my Church. Lord, stretch forth Your hand to heal and to perform wonders that will break the veil of unbelief in my neighborhood. Send down Your revival fire today! Let my life become a living epistle and a sign that compels men to cry out ‘Hosanna!’ to the King of Israel. Apprehend the stubborn and save the lost through Your mighty hand, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

PROPHETIC DECREE:

I decree today that you are becoming a “Living Sign” in your generation! Every “grave” the enemy has placed you in is opening now by the voice of the Son of God! I command the spirit of unbelief in your household to be shattered by a sudden, compelling wonder. Before this month of April ends, people shall come to you to “see what the Lord has done,” and because of your testimony, many shall go away and believe in Jesus. You are a carrier of the “Compelling Presence,” and your life shall bring acknowledgment to the King, in the mighty Name of Jesus!
