THE PERIL OF PRIDE: THE RISK OF IGNORING GOD’S COUNSEL

I. THE ANATOMY OF DIVINE WARNING

As we gather on this Saturday, April 25, 2026, the Holy Spirit confronts us with a sobering reality: God never strikes without warning. In His infinite mercy, the Almighty always provides a window of escape before the gavel of judgment falls. This is the central theme of Isaiah’s prophecy against Moab.

Moab, the descendants of Lot, were a people who had shared a history with the people of God, yet they had drifted into a state of defiant self-sufficiency. In Isaiah 16, we see a form of counsel from a God who, as Ezekiel 18:32 affirms, “has no pleasure in the death of him that dieth.” Divine counsel is not an infringement on our freedom; it is a lifeline thrown to a drowning man. When God speaks, it is to avert the destruction that our own choices have set in motion.

II. THE MOABITE TRAGEDY: PRIDE BEFORE THE FALL

Matthew Henry, in his classic exposition, highlights that God gave Moab a specific “to-do list” to save their nation. They were told to show kindness to God’s people, to execute righteous judgment, and to provide a “shadow” or refuge for the outcasts.

1. The Shadow in the Noonday

The Key Verse instructs: “make your shadow like the night in the middle of the day.” This is a poetic way of saying that in the heat of someone else’s crisis, you should be their cooling relief. God was telling Moab that their safety lay in their mercy. He was giving them an opportunity to “break off their sins by righteousness,” much like Daniel counselled Nebuchadnezzar (Daniel 4:27).

2. The Garden that Became a Grave

Moab was a land of incredible fertility. In Genesis 13:10, the plains of Jordan were likened to the “garden of the Lord.” They had vineyards, winepresses, and abundance. However, they became proud and self-assured. They rejected the warning, thinking their prosperity was a shield. But because they ignored the counsel, the verdict was swift: “In three years… the glory of Moab shall be despised” (Isaiah 16:14).

The very land that was their pride became the site of their downfall. When we ignore God’s counsel, we transform our blessings into the very instruments of our discipline.

III. THE THREE MONUMENTS OF FOLLY

Scripture provides a “hall of shame” for those who thought they were wiser than God’s counsel.

Nebuchadnezzar: He was warned by Daniel to show mercy to the poor to lengthen his tranquility. He waited twelve months, looked at his palace, and said, “Is not this great Babylon that I have built?” Within the hour, he was eating grass like an animal.

The Rich Fool: In Luke 12:16–21, Jesus tells of a man whose land brought forth plentifully. His counsel to himself was: “Soul, take thine ease.” But God’s counsel was different. God called him a “fool” because he hoarded what was meant to be shared. He died that very night, leaving his barns to others.

Moab: They were warned to protect the outcasts of Israel, but they chose betrayal instead. They valued their political standing more than God’s principles.

In all three cases, the pattern is the same: God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble (James 4:6).

IV. THE RISK OF THE “SELF-HELP” MENTALITY

In 2026, the risk of ignoring God’s counsel is perhaps higher than ever. We live in a DIY (Do It Yourself) culture. We have AI to answer our questions, financial advisors to secure our futures, and social media to validate our egos. It is easy to feel “self-assured.”

However, true wisdom—the kind that “profits”—is heeding the voice of God. Divine counsel often instructs us to do the opposite of our natural instincts:

Q1: How do I distinguish God’s counsel from my own thoughts or public opinion?

Answer: God’s counsel will always align with the “Spirit of the Night Shadow”—it will involve mercy, justice, and humility. If the “counsel” you are following encourages pride, selfishness, or the betrayal of the weak, it is not from God. As the Bereans did, always verify the “voice” against the written Word.

Q2: What if I have already ignored God’s counsel and I’m feeling the consequences?

Answer: It is never too late to humble yourself. Even Ahab, one of the most wicked kings, found a reprieve when he humbled himself after a warning. God’s aim is not your destruction, but your restoration. Repent today, and like the Rich Fool, start “laying up treasures in heaven” instead of on earth.

Q3: Does God give counsel through people, or only through the Bible?

Answer: He uses both. Isaiah was a man; Daniel was a man. God often sends “messengers” to our lives. The risk is that we often despise the messenger because we don’t like the message. If a godly peer, pastor, or even a child brings a word that aligns with Scripture, treat it as Divine Counsel.

VI. THE 2026 PROPHETIC CHALLENGE: THE THREE-YEAR WINDOW

The prophecy against Moab had a timeline: “Within three years.” There is often a “buffer zone” between the rejection of counsel and the arrival of the consequence. This is God’s mercy giving you time to change.

  • Don’t mistake God’s patience for God’s approval.

  • Don’t assume that because “nothing has happened yet,” you are safe.

Use the “middle of the day” to make your shadow. Look around you today—who is the “outcast” God is asking you to hide? What “judgment” is He asking you to execute in your business or family?

VII. REFLECTION & PROPHETIC ALIGNMENT

THOUGHT TO PONDER:

How often have I ignored a “check” in my spirit or a direct warning from the Word, only to suffer the “Moabite consequence” later? What is God saying to me right now that I am pretending not to hear?

ACTION POINT:

1: Identify the Counsel: Write down one thing you know God has been asking you to do (e.g., forgive someone, change a business practice, spend more time in prayer).

2: Execute Judgment: Make the decision to act on that counsel today. Do not wait for “three years” to pass.

3: Be a Shadow: Reach out to someone who is currently in the “heat” of a crisis and offer them refuge, whether financial, emotional, or spiritual.

PRAYER:

O Lord, I thank You that You do not delight in my destruction. I repent for every time I have been proud and self-assured, thinking I knew better than Your Word. I receive grace and wisdom today never to depart from Your counsel. Open my ears to hear Your warnings and my heart to obey Your instructions. Let me not be like the rich fool, but help me to lay up treasures in heaven. I choose the path of humility today, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

PROPHETIC DECREE:

I decree today that the spirit of Moab—the spirit of pride and self-delusion—is broken over your life! I decree that your “garden” shall not become a desert because you have chosen to heed the Lord. I command your ears to be spiritually sensitive to the “checks” of the Holy Spirit. You shall not fall into the traps the enemy has set, because you are guided by the Counsel of the Most High. This week, as you provide a “shadow” for others, the Almighty shall be your Shade upon your right hand, in the mighty Name of Jesus!
