WHEN HE IS IN THE BOAT – THE GUARANTEE OF A SAFE LANDING

MESSAGE BY: PASTOR E.A. ADEBOYE

BIBLE READING: MARK 4:35–41 (KJV)

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: 1 CHRONICLES 1–2

HYMN: 29 – WHEN PEACE LIKE A RIVER ATTENDETH MY WAY

MEMORISE: “And he said unto him, If thy presence go not with me, carry us not up hence.” — (EXODUS 33:15)

I. THE CRITICAL REQUISITE: THE DIVINE PRESENCE

As we navigate the waters of this year 2026, the Holy Spirit is drawing our attention to the single most important factor in any human endeavor: The Presence of God. Moses, the great leader of Israel, understood this secret perfectly. When God offered to send an angel instead of going Himself, Moses flatly refused. He declared in our memorise, “If thy presence go not with me, carry us not up hence.” Moses knew that progress without Presence is a dangerous delusion. It is better to stay in the wilderness with God than to enter the Promised Land alone. The “Boat of Life” can be a turbulent place, but the identity of your Passenger determines the security of your journey.

II. THE ABONNEMA TESTIMONY: FAITH IN THE BEARER OF THE PRESENCE

Many years ago, I had a crusade scheduled in Abonnema, Rivers State. At that time, reaching that destination required a significant journey by sea. Just before we were set to depart, tragic news reached us—a boat had capsized on that very route, and many lives were lost. In the natural, this would be enough to cancel the trip. But when you are on a mission for the King, the news of the world cannot deter the word of the Lord.

I called a meeting of the workers at our National Headquarters in Ebute Metta to ask for volunteers. One brother raised his hand and asked a very specific question: “Sir, can I be in your boat?” When I agreed, he was visibly relieved. He said he knew that whatever boat I traveled in could not sink.

Now, listen carefully: that man wasn’t putting his faith in me as a “superman.” He was putting his faith in the Presence I carry. He knew that I am a man under authority, walking with the Almighty. If a mere mortal can inspire such confidence because of the God he serves, how much more should you trust the Lord Jesus Christ Himself when He is in your boat?

III. THE ANATOMY OF THE STORM: MARK 4:35-41

In our Bible reading, we see the disciples facing a “great storm of wind.” This was not a minor squall; the waves were beating into the ship until it was full.

1. The Paradox of the Sleeping Master

While the professional fishermen were panicking, Jesus was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow. How could He sleep during a hurricane? Because the Creator of the wind does not fear the wind. His peace was not dependent on the weather, but on His identity.

2. The Cry of Fear vs. The Word of Power

The disciples woke Him with a question of doubt: “Master, carest thou not that we perish?” How often do we ask God that same question in 2026? When the inflation rises or the health report is bad, we wonder if He cares.

Jesus didn’t argue with them. He stood up and spoke to the elements. “Peace, be still.” Immediately, the chaos yielded to a “great calm.” The storm didn’t stop because the wind got tired; it stopped because it recognized the voice of its Owner.

IV. THE GUARANTEE FOR THE CHILD OF GOD

If you are born again, Jesus is not just “watching” your boat from the shore; He is in the boat with you. Matthew 28:20 is His unbreakable contract with you: “I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.”

In Your Career: If Jesus is in your professional boat, the “storms” of corporate politics or economic downturns cannot sink your promotion.

In Your Marriage: When the waves of misunderstanding beat against your home, involve the One who is in the boat. He can still the most turbulent domestic waters.

In Your Health: Even if the ship seems “full of water,” as long as the Great Physician is on board, you will reach the “other side.”

The storm may be real, but the Presence is more real. No weapon fashioned against you will prosper because the Fashioner of all things is sitting right beside you.

V. COMPREHENSIVE Q&A: NAVIGATING LIFE’S WATERS

Q1: Why does Jesus allow the storm to happen at all if He is in the boat?

Answer: Storms are not always a sign of God’s absence; often, they are the stage for God’s manifestation. The disciples would never have known Jesus as the “Commander of the Elements” if they had traveled on a calm sea. The storm was allowed so that their faith could be upgraded.

Q2: What should I do when I feel like Jesus is ‘asleep’ in my situation?

Answer: Jesus being “asleep” is a test of your faith. He wants to see if you will use the Word He has already spoken to you. Notice He said in verse 35, “Let us pass over unto the other side.” That was a decree! If He says you are going to the other side, you cannot sink in the middle. Don’t wake Him with “fear”; wake Him with “expectation.”

Q3: Can Jesus be in the boat of someone who is not born again?

Answer: Jesus is the Creator of everyone, but He is only the “Captain” of those who surrender to Him. If you haven’t given your life to Him, you are sailing solo. You are responsible for your own storms. Why struggle alone when the Controller of the Universe is willing to take the helm?

VI. THE 2026 PROPHETIC CHALLENGE: SECURING THE HELM

The year 2026 has its own unique “waves.” There are global uncertainties and personal challenges that look like “ships full of water.” But the word of the Lord to you today is: Check your Passenger list. * Have you involved Him in your business decisions?

  • Have you acknowledged Him in your travel plans?

  • Do you consult Him before you sign that contract?

If He is in the boat, you have a 100% guarantee of arrival. The storm might toss the boat, it might even drench you, but it cannot sink you.

VII. REFLECTION & PROPHETIC ALIGNMENT

THOUGHT TO PONDER:

If I truly believe Jesus is in my boat, why am I still having sleepless nights over the “weather” of my life?

ACTION POINT:

1: Invite Him Anew: Specifically name the “boat” you are in right now (your project, your family, your health) and say, “Lord Jesus, I acknowledge Your presence here.

2: Trust the Decree: Find a promise in the Word regarding your situation and hold onto it. If He said “pass over,” you will pass over.

3:Surrender Control: If you have been trying to steer the boat by your own strength, take your hands off the wheel and let Him lead.

PRAYER:

Lord Jesus, I thank You because I am not sailing through life alone. Thank You for being in my boat. I rebuke the spirit of fear and anxiety today. No matter how great the storm or how high the waves, I rest in the assurance that You are with me. Speak ‘Peace, be still’ to every area of my life that is currently in turmoil. I trust You to carry me safely to the other side. Thank You for being my Captain and my Deliverer, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

PROPHETIC DECREE:

I decree today that your boat shall not sink! I command every storm of 2026 that is raging against your destiny to be stilled now by the power in the Name of Jesus! I decree that because the Presence of the Almighty goes with you, you shall find favor and safety where others find disaster. You shall not be a casualty of the sea of life. Every “wind” intended to blow you off course is hereby silenced! You are arriving at your “Other Side” with testimony and great joy, in the mighty Name of Jesus!
