PART I: THE VANITY OF GODLESS PROSPERITY
KEY VERSE: “For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow” (Ecclesiastes 1:18).
TEXT: ECCLESIASTES 1:12-18
1. THE ANATOMY OF THE NINE-STORY LEAP
The world was shocked by the story of a wealthy industrialist who leapt to his death from a ninth-story window in Chicago. His suicide note was a chilling indictment of the “American Dream” without God: “I am worth ten million dollars as men judge things, but I am so poor in spirit that I cannot live any longer.” In 2026, we see this tragedy repeated in high-rise apartments and Silicon Valley offices. Why? Because material wealth acts as a “Horizontal Solution” to a “Vertical Problem.” You cannot fill a God-shaped hole in the spirit with a dollar-shaped plug in the bank.
2. THE LACUNA OF HUMAN WISDOM
King Solomon, the wisest man to ever live, provides the “Ecclesiastical Warning.” He pursued knowledge, architecture, and pleasure to their absolute limits, only to conclude: “Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.” * The Increasing Sorrow: As we increase in godless knowledge, we often increase in our awareness of the world’s brokenness without having a Savior to fix it.
The Mirage of Independence: Modern man assumes that AI, medical breakthroughs, and amassing wealth make him independent. But a breath of air is all that stands between a billionaire and judgment. To be wealthy in the world but “poor towards God” is the ultimate definition of failure.
PART II: DON’T WAIT UNTIL IT IS TOO LATE
MEMORISE: “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.” (Revelation 3:20)
BIBLE READING: LUKE 18:18-25
1. THE TRAGEDY OF THE SORROWFUL RULER
In Luke 18, we meet the “Rich Young Ruler.” He had everything: youth, power, and wealth. Yet, he was restless. He asked, “What shall I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus identifies the Idol in the Heart. For this man, his riches were his “Master.” When Jesus asked him to exchange his temporal treasure for eternal treasure, he walked away sorrowful.
The Lesson for 2026: Mercy is a gift, but it is not forced. The ruler chose his “Needle’s Eye” (the narrow gate of pride and wealth) and found it impossible to pass through because he refused to drop his baggage.
2. THE “LATER” DECEPTION: A WARNING
Pastor Adeboye shares the story of a wealthy man in Western Nigeria who rejected salvation, claiming, “I have spent most of my life with the devil and would like to end it with him.” He died weeks later.
Procrastination is the devil’s most effective tool. He doesn’t tell you “Don’t get saved”; he says “Don’t get saved today.”
Breath is the Boundary: As long as you are breathing, mercy is available. The moment the breath stops, the door of mercy becomes the gate of judgment.
The Mercy Choice: Lamentations 3:22-23 says His mercies are new every morning, but they are not eternal for those who reject the Son.
III. COMPREHENSIVE Q&A: NAVIGATING WEALTH AND ETERNITY
Q1: Is it a sin to be wealthy or to pursue knowledge?
Answer (1 Timothy 6:10, 17): It is not wealth that is the root of evil, but the love of money. Knowledge is good, but “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” If your pursuit of a PhD or a promotion causes you to neglect your soul, you are “increasing sorrow.
Q2: How do I know if my wealth has become an idol?
Answer (Matthew 6:21): Where your treasure is, there your heart will be. If you cannot give to the poor or sacrifice for the Kingdom without “sorrow” (like the rich ruler), your money owns you.
Q3: Is it ever truly ‘too late’ while a person is alive?
Answer (Isaiah 55:6): Technically, no. But practically, the heart can become “seared” (1 Timothy 4:2). The longer you say “No” to the Holy Spirit, the harder it becomes to say “Yes.” Seeking God “while He may be found” implies there is a time when He may not be found by a hardened heart.
IV. THE RESTORATION SUITE: PRAYERS & ACTIVATION
A. Personal Petitions: Deliverance from Vanity
The Soul-Prosperity Decree (3 John 1:2): Father, I refuse to be a “Rich Fool.” Let my soul prosper even as my business or career prospers. I refuse to let my achievements become my god, in Jesus’ Name!
The Anti-Procrastination Cry (Hebrews 3:15): Lord, if I have been delaying my total surrender to You, I break that chain today. I open the door of my heart NOW. I will not wait until it is too late, in Jesus’ Name!
The Void-Filling Grace (John 4:14): Lord, fill the inner lacuna of my life with Your living water. Deliver me from the “Chicago Industrialist” syndrome. Let Your peace be my anchor in times of difficulty, in Jesus’ Name!
B. Intercessory Requests: For the Lost
4. The Hard-Heart Breaking Decree (Ezekiel 36:26): Father, take away the heart of stone from my wealthy friends and family members. Give them a heart of flesh that responds to Your knock today, in Jesus’ Name!
5. For the Deceived (2 Corinthians 4:4): Lord, remove the blinders from those who think they have “all the time in the world.” Show them the urgency of eternity, in Jesus’ Name!
C. Prophetic Declarations
6. The Kingdom First Decree (Matthew 6:33): I declare that I am seeking first the Kingdom of God! Every other thing I need is being added to me! I am a “Kingdom Financier,” not a “Worldly Pursuer.”
7. The Amazing Grace Testimony: I was lost, but now I am found! The grace that saved a wretch like me is my shield and portion as long as life endures!
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Worldly accomplishments without Christ, in the end, prove worthless. Don’t trade a billion years for a few decades of luxury.
PRAYER: Lord, I thank You for Your mercy that is new this morning. I open the door of my heart to You. Take my life, my wealth, and my wisdom, and use them for Your glory. Deliver me from the sorrow of a Christless existence. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
