MIGHTY WORKS

MESSAGE BY: Pastor E. A. Adeboye

MEMORISE: “Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.” — Mark 9:23

I. THE TRAGEDY OF FAMILIARITY: CAPTURING THE ENVIRONMENT OF UNBELIEF

The character and nature of the Almighty God are fundamentally intertwined with supernatural power. The prophet Jeremiah highlights this beautifully in Jeremiah 32:19, declaring that the Lord is “great in counsel, and mighty in work.” God does not merely perform miracles occasionally; He loves doing mighty works. It is His divine pleasure to alter natural laws, suspend protocols, and manifest His majestic power on behalf of His creation.

Yet, our Bible reading today presents an incredibly tragic paradox in the ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ. When He returned to His own hometown, the very place where the people should have celebrated and received Him with absolute faith, His power was structurally restricted.

The text records a shocking spiritual blockage in Mark 6:5: “And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them.”

Consider the weight of that statement. It does not say Jesus would not do any mighty works; it explicitly states that He could not. The sovereign, boundless, healing virtue of the Son of God was effectively neutralized in that environment.

The cause of this paralysis was not a lack of power on Christ’s part, but rather the heavy, suffocating atmosphere of human familiarity and unbelief. The townspeople looked at Him through carnal lenses, saying, “Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary?” They reduced the Lord of Glory to a local laborer. Familiarity bred contempt, and contempt generated a massive barrier of doubt.

Unbelief is a aggressive spiritual force that shuts down the windows of heaven. It acts like a rubber barrier that prevents the lightning of God’s power from striking your situation. If you allow doubt, skepticism, or intellectual pride to take root in your mind, you automatically disqualify yourself from experiencing the supernatural dimensions of God.

II. THE MANDATE OF HORIZONTAL PARTNERSHIP: SUBSCRIBING TO GREATER WORKS

God does not wish to operate in total isolation. While He possesses the absolute sovereignty to act alone, His established kingdom protocol is to seek out human sons and daughters who will actively partner with Him.

God is searching the earth today for men and women through whom He can show Himself strong. In fact, Jesus raised the bar of expectation to a staggering height in John 14:12, promising that those who believe in Him would not only do the works He did, but would perform “greater works than these; because I go unto my Father.”

This is a formal invitation to become a co-laborer with divinity. However, to step into the eligibility bracket for these greater works, the primary currency required is not academic intellect, financial wealth, or ecclesiastical ranking—the mandatory requirement is uncompromised faith.

You do not need to graduate from a theological seminary, obtain an advanced degree, or be ordained into a highly esteemed position before you can be used by God to shake your generation. The disciples who turned the ancient world upside down were largely unlearned fishermen, yet they possessed a simple, explosive faith in the resurrected Christ.

III. THE SIGNS OF THE COMMISSION: POWER TO THE BELIEVER

As the Lord Jesus prepared to ascend into heaven, He handed over the legal framework of His authority to the Church. He commissioned His followers to carry the gospel to every nation, specifying the exact supernatural credentials that would accompany their ministry:

“And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.” — Mark 16:17-18

Notice that Jesus did not say these signs would only follow Apostles, Prophets, or Bishops. He explicitly stated that they would follow “them that believe.”

The single qualifying variable that bridges the gap between human limitation and divine manifestation is your faith. When you embrace the name of Jesus with unyielding conviction, your hands become extensions of His hands, your voice becomes an echo of His voice, and your command causes the kingdom of darkness to tremble.

IV. REFOCUSING THE SPIRITUAL BARS: GROWING YOUR FAITH CAPACITY

Child of God, the Lord wants to utilize your life as His strategic battle-axe to systematically dismantle the works of darkness in your family, your community, and your career (Jeremiah 51:20). But you must actively clear out the debris of doubt from your heart.

If you realize that you have allowed rationalism, negative medical reports, or past disappointments to cheat you out of the mighty works God has prepared for you, you must run to the throne of grace and cry out for His mercy today.

To permanently insulate your heart against the infection of unbelief, you must systematically drench your mind in the Word of God. As Romans 10:17 dictates, “Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” You must constantly listen to testimonies of God’s power, study the scriptures daily, and intentionally distance yourself from cynical conversations, toxic media, and anything that dampens your spiritual fire.

Jesus Christ remains exactly the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). What He did through the early apostles, He is ready and willing to do in your life today. Only believe, shake off your lethargy, step out into the field, and let the Master work through you!

V. PRAYER POINT

Dear Father, I ask that You forgive me for every area where I have allowed doubt and familiarity to limit Your power in my life. I pray that You arise in Your majesty and perform mighty works in me and through me, in the victorious Name of Jesus. Amen.

VI. BIBLE TEXT SUMMARY: MARK 6:1-6

Jesus returns to His hometown of Nazareth accompanied by His disciples. On the Sabbath, He begins teaching in the local synagogue, leaving many of the listeners astonished by His profound wisdom and the reports of His mighty miracles. However, the people quickly succumb to familiarity, pointing out His secular trade as a carpenter and naming His mother and siblings. Becoming offended by Him, they refuse to believe. Consequently, Jesus remarks that a prophet is not without honor except in his own country and household. Because of their deep-seated unbelief, He is unable to perform any major miracles there, apart from laying His hands on a few sick individuals and healing them, leaving Him marveled at their lack of faith.

VII. BIBLE IN ONE YEAR SUMMARY: ECCLESIASTES 9-12

Ecclesiastes 9: Solomon observes that the same ultimate destiny of death awaits both the righteous and the wicked, concluding that life should be enjoyed joyfully while it lasts. He points out that the race is not always to the swift nor the battle to the strong, and shares a parable of a poor, wise man who delivered a besieged city yet was quickly forgotten by its citizens.

Ecclesiastes 10: This section provides a collection of wise proverbs, noting that a little folly outweighs great wisdom and honor. Solomon warns against political incompetence in high leadership, emphasizes the value of hard work over laziness, and remarks that while money may answer all worldly things, wisdom is profitable to direct.

Ecclesiastes 11: The Preacher encourages bold investment and generosity, telling readers to “cast your bread upon the waters” for it will return after many days. He urges individuals to take faith-filled risks rather than constantly watching the clouds, and reminds the youth to rejoice in their vigor while keeping in mind that God will bring every action into judgment.

Ecclesiastes 12: Solomon delivers a powerful poetic description of aging and physical decline, urging humanity to “Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth.” He concludes his entire philosophical quest with a final, non-negotiable summation: “Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.”

VIII. HYMN 4: TO THE WORK! TO THE WORK! WE ARE SERVANTS OF GOD

1. To the work! to the work! we are servants of God,

Let us follow the path that our Master has trod;

With the balm of His counsel our strength to renew,

Let us do with our might what our hands find to do.

Toiling on, toiling on,

Toiling on, toiling on:

Let us hope, let us watch,

And labour till the Master comes.

2. To the work! to the work! let the hungry be fed;

To the fountain of life let the weary be led;

In the cross and its banner our glory shall be,

While we herald the tidings, “Salvation is free!”

3. To the work! to the work! there is labour for all;

For the kingdom of darkness and error shall fall;

And the name of Jehovah exalted shall be,

In the loud-swelling chorus, “Salvation is free!”

4. To the work! to the work! in the strength of the Lord,

And a robe and a crown shall our labour reward;

When the home of the faithful our dwelling shall be,

And we shout with the ransomed, “Salvation is free!”
