REVERSING HOPELESSNESS – THE DIVINE LIFTER OF THE HEAD

MESSAGE BY: PASTOR E.A. ADEBOYE

BIBLE READING: JOHN 5:2–9 (KJV)

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: 2 KINGS 6–8

HYMN: 21 – MY HOPE IS BUILT ON NOTHING LESS

MEMORISE: “But thou, O LORD, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head.” — (PSALM 3:3)

I. THE ANATOMY OF HOPELESSNESS

As we begin this new week on Monday, April 20th, 2026, the Holy Spirit brings us a word of deep restoration: The Reversal of Hopelessness. Hopelessness is a spiritual and emotional state where a person believes that their situation is final, irreversible, and beyond even the reach of God. It is the “long-term case” syndrome—the feeling that because a problem has lasted for decades, it has become part of one’s identity.

In our Bible reading, we see the man at the Pool of Bethesda. He didn’t just have an infirmity; he had it for thirty-eight years. That is nearly four decades of watching others succeed while he remained stagnant. By the time Jesus approached him, his hope was not just deferred; it was dead. When Jesus asked, “Wilt thou be made whole?”, the man didn’t say “Yes!” Instead, he offered a list of reasons why he couldn’t be healed: “Sir, I have no man…”

Hopelessness always focuses on “I have no man,” but Mercy focuses on “I am the Son of God.” The man was looking for a human assistant to help him into the water, but he was standing before the One who created the water. Jesus bypassed his excuses, bypassed the pool, and commanded a reversal: “Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.”

II. THE PROTOCOL OF THE DIVINE ENCOUNTER

When God wants to take someone the world has labeled as “finished” and turn them into a living testimony, He arranges a Divine Encounter. This is a supernatural intersection where God’s sovereignty meets man’s extremity.

1. The Broken Car and the Broken Womb

Several years ago, I was traveling toward Ilesha when I spotted a car broken down on the roadside. It had an RCCG sticker, and I recognized the woman standing there. She was pregnant, but her face was the picture of despair.

When I asked about the car, she dismissed it. “Sir, I have a bigger problem.” For six days, the baby in her womb had been completely still. The medical verdict was final: the baby was dead, and an evacuation (D&C) was scheduled. This was a hopeless situation by every human standard. But I spoke a simple word of decree: “Baby, come back to life, in Jesus’ name.”

2. From Evacuation to Celebration

The reversal was instant. The baby leaped. Years later, while visiting a parish in Europe, I saw a young man playing the drums with vigor and skill. That drummer was the very baby the doctors wanted to evacuate!

What is the lesson? Your situation is only hopeless if God is not involved. If the “Lifter of your head” steps onto the scene, death must give way to life, and silence must give way to a testimony.

III. WHY GOD REVERSES HOPELESSNESS

Why does God choose the most “impotent folk” to showcase His power?

For His Glory: When a 38-year-old problem vanishes in a second, no doctor or “man” can take the credit. It points everyone to the “Solid Rock.”

To Silence the Accuser: Satan uses hopelessness to make you stay on your “bed” (your place of limitation). When you take up your bed and walk, you carry the evidence of your victory over the enemy.

To Demonstrate His Sovereignty: He is the “Lifter up of mine head.” When your head is bowed in shame, God doesn’t just sympathize; He physically and spiritually lifts you up.

IV. COMPREHENSIVE Q&A: NAVIGATING THE “BETHESDA” MOMENTS

Q1: I have been praying for a long time and nothing has changed. Am I in a hopeless situation?

Answer: The man at Bethesda waited 38 years. The delay was not a denial; it was a setup for a greater “Sabbath” miracle. Hopelessness is a choice to stop believing. As long as you are still breathing, and as long as the Word of God remains true, there is hope (Ecclesiastes 9:4).

Q2: What if ‘I have no man’ to help me in my career or business?

Answer: That is exactly where God wants you! When you have “no man,” you are the prime candidate for a “Divine Encounter.” Stop looking at the sheep market and start looking at the Shepherd. If Jesus is on your side, one “Rise and walk” command is worth more than a thousand human connections.

Q3: How do I handle a medical report that says my case is final?

Answer: Respect the doctors, but remember they only practice medicine; God is Life. Like the woman in the testimony, take that report to the “Solid Rock.” Your hope is built on His blood and righteousness, not on clinical statistics.

V. THE 2026 PROPHETIC VISION: THE SHIELD AND THE GLORY

As we navigate the complexities of 2026, many are feeling the weight of global uncertainty. The “waters” of the world are troubled, and everyone is pushing to get ahead. But the Lord says to you today: “I am your Shield.”

  • You don’t need to struggle to be “first” into the pool.

  • You don’t need a human “man” to push you.

  • The Lifter of your head is here to reverse the 38-year cycles of stagnation.

VI. REFLECTION & ACTION POINT

THOUGHT TO PONDER:

Am I like the man at the pool, making excuses based on my lack of human help, or am I ready to hear the voice of Jesus over my infirmity?

ACTION POINT:

Identify that one area where you have said, “It’s too late,” or “I have no help.”

Renounce the Excuses: Stop saying “I have no man.”

Invite the Lifter: Spend 15 minutes in worship today, specifically using Psalm 3:3.

Act on the Word: Do something that demonstrates your hope has returned. If you felt you couldn’t apply for that job or start that project, do it today as an act of “taking up your bed.”

PRAYER POINT:

Father, I thank You because You are the Shield and the Lifter of my head. I bring every hopeless situation in my body, my family, and my finances before You. Lord, reverse the irreversible! Let every ‘dead baby’ in my dreams or my womb come back to life. I refuse to stay on the bed of stagnation any longer. I rise, I take up my bed, and I walk into my season of testimony, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

PROPHETIC DECREE:

I decree today that your 38-year-old cycle of “almost there but never there” is broken! I command the “insects” of hopelessness to be burnt by the fire of the Holy Ghost. That which the world has scheduled for “evacuation” in your life is being rescheduled for “celebration”! Before this week is over, the One who makes rivers in the desert will give you a miracle that will make you the “drummer” of God’s praise in the congregation of the saints, in Jesus’ Name!
