The Preeminence, Power, and Purpose of Jesus Christ

MESSAGE:WORSHIP GOD THE SON 

The Christian faith is a story of three persons in one Godhead, and at the very heart of this faith is God the Son: Jesus Christ. He is not merely a historical figure, a wise prophet, or a religious teacher. He is the eternal, divine, and co-equal Son of God, who took on human flesh to save humanity. Our worship is not complete until it is fully directed toward Him.

As the Bible beautifully states in Philippians 2:9, God has given Jesus “a name that is above every other name. At the mention of His name every knee shall bow.” This command to bow and worship is rooted in the unparalleled identity, saving work, and ultimate authority of Jesus Christ.

The Christmas narrative, detailed in Matthew 1:18-2:11, serves as the perfect starting point for understanding why Jesus is worthy of our complete devotion. It reveals His divine conception, His singular purpose, and the immediate, powerful response of worship He elicited from the first people who encountered Him: the Wise Men. They traveled great distances, saw the young child, “fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.” This act sets the precedent for all believers.

A. Who is Jesus? The Eternal God-Man

To truly worship Jesus, we must first grasp the depth of His identity. He is not a created being; He is God Himself.

One with the Father (John 10:30): Jesus is God the Son, one in essence with the Father. He is eternal and existed with God the Father from the very beginning of time and before it (eternity). John 1:1 declares, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” The Word is Jesus Christ.

The Creator (Colossians 1:16-17): He is the agent of all creation. Through Him, “all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth... All things were created through Him and for Him.” This alone qualifies Him for worship—He is the source of all that exists.

The Savior and Redeemer (Matthew 1:21): Jesus Christ was sent to take away the sin of the world. His name, JESUS, means “He shall save His people from their sins.” He is the only sinless one, the only one qualified to give His blood to wash our sins away. He completed this work, rose again on the third day, and ascended back to Heaven, securing our eternal redemption.

B. How Jesus Proved His Power on Earth

Jesus’s life on earth was a continuous demonstration of His divinity, proving that He held all authority, both human and divine. His works were concrete evidence that He was indeed God in the flesh.

Power Over Nature (Matthew 8:27, Luke 8:25): He calmed storms and walked on water. The wind and the waves obey Him because He is their Creator and Master.

Power Over Death (John 11:38-44): He raised the dead, including Lazarus, demonstrating that He is the source and master of life itself.

Power to Forgive Sin (Matthew 9:6): Only God can forgive sin. When Jesus healed the paralytic and told him, “Son, your sins are forgiven,” He made a direct claim to divinity, a claim He validated by healing the man.

Foreknowledge and Sovereignty (John 6:64, John 18:4): He knew the hearts and intentions of men and accurately predicted His own suffering, death, and resurrection, demonstrating that He was in sovereign control of His own destiny.

All Authority (Matthew 28:18): After His resurrection, He affirmed, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.” This declaration is the basis for our Great Commission and our ultimate hope.

C. The Names of Jesus: A Vocabulary of Worship

The various names and titles given to Jesus reveal different aspects of His character and power, each one demanding worship.

D. Your Response to God the Son

Jesus Christ is the answer to man’s greatest need: how to deal with sin. He is the only one qualified to save you from sin. Therefore, our response to Him must be complete and total.

1. Accept Him as Your Savior from Sin:
   • Acknowledge Sin: Accept that you are a sinner (Romans 3:23).
   • Believe His Work: Believe Jesus died for your sin, was buried, and rose again.
   • Call on Him: Call on Him to save you from your sin, for “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13).
2. Love Him with All Your Heart: Let your love for Him be the driving force in your life, surpassing all other loves.
3. Worship, Praise, and Thank Him Always: Worship is not an event; it is a lifestyle of continuous praise and gratitude for who He is and what He has done.
4. Obey His Words: True devotion is demonstrated through obedience. If you love Him, you will keep His commandments.
5. Tell Others About Him and Serve Him: The knowledge of the Savior is too wonderful to keep to yourself. We are commissioned to share His story and serve His purposes on earth.

Conclusion and Challenge

To know Jesus today is to accept salvation, obey Him, serve Him, and be eternally blessed (Philippians 3:10). The wise men presented their treasures to Him. What treasure are you presenting?

CHALLENGE: If you have Jesus as your Savior already, let your life be a continuous offering: Worship Him, Obey His word, tell others about Him, and serve Him.
