DIVINE INTERRUPTIONS: WHEN GOD OPENS THE ASS’ MOUTH

I. THE PERIL OF SPIRITUAL BLINDNESS IN 2026
As we cross the midway point of March 2026, we find ourselves in a world characterized by high-speed ambitions and the relentless pursuit of material gain. In our modern, tech-driven society, it is dangerously easy to become “spiritually deaf”—so focused on our personal goals and financial “prophetic” expansion that we lose the ability to see the Angel of the Lord standing in our path with a drawn sword.
The story of Balaam in Numbers 22 is not merely a Sunday School tale about a talking animal; it is a sobering warning to every believer, leader, and professional living in 2026. It is a study of what happens when a man’s vision is clouded by Mammon—the spirit of material greed. When your heart is set on a “Moabite paycheck,” even the most blatant spiritual warnings can go unnoticed.
II. THE BALAAM SYNDROME: MATERIAL GAIN VS. DIVINE GUIDANCE
Balaam was a man who knew God’s voice. In the earlier verses of this chapter, God had clearly told him, “Thou shalt not go with them; thou shalt not curse the people: for they are blessed” (Numbers 22:12).
However, King Balak of Moab offered more honor and more wealth. Balaam’s tragedy was that he tried to “negotiate” with God’s clear instruction because he was fascinated by the material offer.
The Danger of the “Double Heart”: Jesus warned us in Matthew 6:24 that no man can serve two masters. You cannot serve God and Mammon.
The Modern Application: In 2026, “Balaamism” manifests as the temptation to pad invoices, inflate contracts, or compromise your Christian ethics for a promotion or a business deal. When material gain becomes your “sole purpose,” you effectively make money your god.
God is a jealous God. He will not share your heart with a bank balance. Balaam thought he was in control as he saddled his donkey, but his spiritual eyes were shut tight by the glitter of Moabite gold.
III. THE ANATOMY OF A DIVINE INTERVENTION
The narrative in Numbers 22:23–27 describes three stages of God’s attempts to stop a man bent on his own destruction:
The Field (The Wide Warning): The donkey saw the Angel and turned into the field. Balaam smote her. Often, God’s first warning is a gentle diversion—an unexpected delay or a missed opportunity that was actually meant to save us.
The Vineyard Path (The Pressured Warning): The Angel stood in a narrow path between two walls. The donkey thrust itself against the wall, crushing Balaam’s foot. God was getting closer, making the path narrower. Pain is often God’s megaphone to rouse a deaf world.
The Narrow Place (The Total Standstill): Finally, the Angel stood in a place so narrow there was no way to turn right or left. The donkey simply sat down.
Balaam’s reaction to these interventions was Anger. When we are out of God’s will, we become frustrated by the very things God is using to protect us. We “smite the donkey”—we complain about our jobs, our transportation, or our circumstances—not realizing that those very delays are preventing us from walking into a drawn sword.
IV. WHEN THE SILENT SPEAK: GOD’S EXTREME MEASURES
The climax of this account is found in verse 28: “And the Lord opened the mouth of the ass.” It is a profound irony: the “Prophet” was blind, but the beast of burden could see. The “Prophet” was silent toward God’s true will, so God made the “dumb animal” speak with a human voice.
Why must God go to such lengths? Because of the hardness of the human heart. God is not willing that any should perish (2 Peter 3:9). He would rather make a donkey speak than see a man walk into eternal destruction.
The Sensitivity Check: If God has to use “extreme means” to get your attention—a crisis, a financial crash, or a literal miracle—it suggests that your daily sensitivity to the Holy Spirit has withered.
V. COMPREHENSIVE Q&A: CALIBRATING YOUR SPIRITUAL HEARING
Q1: How can I tell if a delay in my life is a ‘Balaam’s Donkey’ (God stopping me) or just a demonic hindrance?
Answer: Look at the “Angel with the sword.” If your path is leading you to compromise your integrity, inflate figures, or go where God explicitly told you not to go, then the delay is Divine Mercy. A demonic hindrance usually attacks you when you are on the path of obedience. Balaam was on the path of disobedience.
Q2: I work in a high-pressure corporate environment in Nigeria. How do I avoid ‘padding invoices’ when everyone else is doing it?
Answer: Remember that you serve a jealous God who fights your battles. Hebrews 11:6 reminds us that without faith, it is impossible to please Him. Trusting God for your provision means believing He can sustain you without the “extra” money from an inflated invoice. If you cannot be trusted with earthly mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches?
Q3: What does it mean when the donkey says, ‘Was I ever wont to do so unto thee?’
Answer: The donkey was pointing out its consistent nature. God often uses the “consistency” of our environment to show us when something is wrong. When your usual peace is gone, or your usual patterns are disrupted, don’t get angry. Stop and ask, “Lord, are You trying to show me an Angel in the way?”
VI. REFLECTION & PROPHETIC PRAYER
KEY PRINCIPLE: God’s “No” is often a “Save.” Never smite the delay that is keeping you from a drawn sword.
PRAYER POINTS:
Sensitivity of Heart: O Lord, give me a listening and an obedient heart. Remove every scale of greed and material pursuit that has blinded my spiritual eyes.
Repentance for Stubbornness: Father, I repent for the times I have ‘smitten the ass’—complaining about Your divine interruptions. I thank You for the delays that saved my life.
Integrity in the Marketplace: Lord, I receive the grace to be a faithful witness in my workplace. I refuse to inflate invoices or pad figures. I trust You as my source and my provider.
Marketplace Dominion: Like Joshua, I choose to trust God in the battles of my life. I declare that Moab shall not prevail over my destiny because my trust is firm in the Living God.
CLOSING DECREE:
In this year 2026, you shall not be blind! You shall not wait for a donkey to speak before you hear the King of Kings. Every “narrow place” you encounter this week shall be a place of divine revelation and not of destruction. Your ears are open to the promptings of the Holy Spirit, in Jesus’ Name! Amen.
