BIBLE READING: 1 SAMUEL 17:4-11, 16, 32, 42, 45-50
“Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.” (1 Samuel 17:45)
I. THE ASYMMETRIC WARFARE: FOOTMEN VS. GOLIATHS
As we enter the final week of January 2026, the Holy Spirit is raising a company of “Footmen”—believers who may not have the stature of kings or the pedigree of generals, but who are destined to bring down the Goliaths of this age. In military terms, a footman is an infantryman; he is on the ground, often overlooked, and seemingly vulnerable.
The battle in 1 Samuel 17 was not just between two men; it was a clash of Ordnance Systems. Goliath represented the peak of human military technology: he had a brass helmet, a coat of mail weighing five thousand shekels, and a spear like a weaver’s beam. He was a “High-Asset” warrior. David, conversely, was a “Low-Asset” footman. But David understood a secret that the entire army of Israel had forgotten: Victory is not a result of superior hardware, but of superior Alignment.
II. THE CHOICE OF ARMOR: REJECTING THE SAUL-SYSTEM
One of the greatest dangers for a “Footman” in 2026 is the temptation to wear “Saul’s Armor.” When David volunteered to fight, Saul tried to put his own tunic and bronze helmet on him.
- The Saul-System: Represents carnal methods, human intellectualism, social capital, and “how things have always been done.”
- The David-Response: David tried them but said, “I cannot go with these, for I have not proved them.” (v. 39).
To bring down your giant this year—whether it is a giant of debt, a giant of terminal illness, or a giant of ancestral stagnation—you must have the courage to take off the armor of “man’s opinion.” If you fight with fleshly weapons, you are limited to fleshly results. David chose to be God’s delegate rather than Saul’s delegate. He went back to the “Proved” weapons: a sling, five smooth stones, and a heart in tune with the Heavens.
III. THE TECHNOLOGY OF THE NAME
David’s primary weapon was not the sling; it was The Name. “Thou comest to me with a sword… but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts.” (v. 45).
In the spiritual realm, “The Name” is not just a title; it is a Jurisdictional Authority. 1. The Name as a Tower: Proverbs 18:10 tells us that the Name of the Lord is a strong tower. For a footman, the Name is his “Fortification.”
2. The Name as an Invitation: When David invoked the Name, he moved the battle from a “One-on-One” to a “God-vs-Goliath” encounter. He made the battle the Lord’s.
3. The Invisible Force: While the Philistines were shouting in anticipation of a slaughter, they could not see the “Invisible Force of Heaven” backing the boy with the stones. When a footman uses the Name, he is backed by the entire artillery of Zion.
IV. THE FIVE SMOOTH STONES OF 2026
David picked five smooth stones from the brook. In 2026, these stones represent the “Mighty Weapons” of 2 Corinthians 10:4:
- The Stone of the Word: “It is written.”
- The Stone of Blood: The finished work of Christ.
- The Stone of Testimony: Remembering the lion and the bear.
- The Stone of Praise: High praises that bind kings in chains.
- The Stone of Persistent Prayer: The spiritual impact that shatters strongholds.
Footmen bring down giants because they don’t miss. Why? Because the Holy Spirit guides the stone. David’s stone didn’t just hit Goliath; it “sunk into his forehead” (v. 49). This was a supernatural penetration. When God is in your “small” efforts, they produce “giant” results.
V. CONCLUSION: THE DEFEAT OF THE DEFANT
Goliath made one fatal mistake: he “defied” the armies of the Living God. Anything in your life that defies the Word of God is a candidate for a “Footman’s Strike.
Do not trade the Name of the Lord for man’s armor. Do not look at your height; look at your Help. David didn’t need a sword to kill the giant; he used the giant’s own sword to finish the job. This year, the very thing the enemy intended to use to destroy you will be the instrument of his own decapitation. Stand tall, Footman. The battle is the Lord’s!
