GRACE FOR LIVING DEVOTIONAL: APRIL 2026 DEEP-DIVE

VICTORY OVER DEATH: THE SPOILS OF CALVARY

MESSAGE BY: FOURSQUARE GOSPEL CHURCH IN NIGERIA

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: JUDGES 20–21; LUKE 11:1–28

FIRE SCRIPTURE: COLOSSIANS 2:9–15

KEY VERSE: “And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.” — (COLOSSIANS 2:15)

I. THE CLINICAL TERMINATION OF TYRANNY

As we settle into this Monday, April 6, 2026, the Holy Spirit is leading us from the celebration of the Resurrection into the legal implications of that victory. In our Fire Scripture, Apostle Paul uses powerful, almost military language to describe what transpired in the spirit realm during the passion of Christ.

He speaks of “spoiling” principalities. In ancient warfare, to “spoil” meant to strip a defeated king of his armor, his weapons, and his dignity. When Jesus went to the cross, He didn’t just survive; He performed a clinical de-weaponization of every demonic hierarchy.

1. The Head of All Power (Verse 10)

Paul reminds us that in Christ dwells the fullness of the Godhead bodily. Because you are “in Him,” you are complete. You are not a victim trying to get a victory; you are a victor enforcing a “Done Deal.” Christ is the head of all principality and power. If He is the Head, and you are His Body, then those powers are beneath your feet.

II. THE ARCHIVE OF DEBT: BLOTTED AND NAILED

One of the most profound verses in the New Testament is Colossians 2:14: “Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us…”

1. The Divine Eraser

Before Calvary, there was a “handwriting”—a spiritual record of every debt, every sin, and every legal claim the devil had against you. It was a document of condemnation. But Jesus took that document and:

Blotted it out: He soaked it in His blood until the ink of your sins was no longer legible.

Took it out of the way: He removed it from the heavenly courtroom.

Nailed it to His cross: In ancient times, when a debt was paid, the receipt was often nailed to a post for all to see. Your “Debt of Death” was nailed to the wood of the cross. The devil cannot sue you for a debt that has been legally cancelled and publicly displayed as “Paid in Full.”

III. THE END OF THE AGONY: VICTORY OVER DEATH

The fear of death is the “Mother of all Fears.” It is a universal experience that has kept humanity in bondage for millennia.

1. The Original Intent vs. The Fall

Adam was created for eternity. Death was never part of the original blueprint; it was an “intruder” brought in by disobedience. For centuries, the devil held the “power of death” as a weapon of terror.

2. The Deliverance (Hebrews 2:14–15)

Jesus entered the domain of death to destroy the one who had the power of death. He didn’t just negotiate with the devil; He disarmed him.

  • He took the “sting” out of death.

  • He turned the “King of Terrors” into a “Shadow of a Valley.”

  • He delivered those who, through fear of death, were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

If the “Agony of Death” has been terminated, why do many Christians still tremble at the thought of it? To fear death is to suggest that the “handwriting” wasn’t fully blotted out.

IV. THE PUBLIC SPECTACLE: TRIUMPHING OPENLY

Verse 15 says He made a “shew of them openly.” In a Roman “Triumph,” a victorious general would march through the streets of Rome, parading his defeated enemies in chains behind his chariot.

Jesus did this spiritually. He led a triumphal procession through the heavens, showing every demon, every principality, and every power that they had been defeated. They were stripped of their authority to hold the believer in guilt, shame, or the fear of the grave.

V. COMPREHENSIVE Q&A: LIVING IN THE TRIUMPH

Q1: If principalities were ‘spoiled,’ why do we still face spiritual warfare?

Answer: The devil is like a “disarmed” criminal who still tries to use an empty gun to scare you. He has no legal weapons left, only deception. Warfare for the believer in 2026 is not about “winning” a victory; it is about “standing” in the victory Christ already won. You resist him with the truth that he is already spoiled.

Q2: How does being ‘buried in baptism’ (Verse 12) relate to victory over death?

Answer: Baptism is your formal identification with the death and resurrection of Christ. It is a spiritual “funeral” for your old, sin-ruled life and a “birthday” for your new, resurrected life. When you understand you have already “died” with Christ, physical death loses its power to scare you.

Q3: Can I lose this victory through my mistakes?

Answer: Your victory is tied to the Finished Work, not your “Perfect Performance.” As long as you remain “in Him” (Verse 10), you are complete. When you make a mistake, you return to the Cross where that mistake was already “nailed,” receive forgiveness, and keep walking in triumph.

VI. REFLECTION & PROPHETIC PRAYER

THOUGHT TO PONDER:

If the “handwriting of ordinances” against me is gone, why am I still listening to the whispers of “guilt” and “shame”?

PROPHETIC DECREE FOR APRIL 6, 2026:

I decree today that every “unpaid debt” the enemy is claiming over your life is cancelled by the Blood of the Lamb! I decree that the spirit of the fear of death is evicted from your heart! In this month of April, you shall walk as one who is Complete in Him. Every principality assigned to hinder your joy is made a public spectacle today! You are rising above adversity, you are overcoming every challenge, and you are doing great exploits because the victory is yours, in Jesus’ Name!

PRAYER:

Thank You, Lord Jesus, for giving me total victory by Your death on the Cross. Thank You for blotting out every record of my failures and nailing them to the tree. I refuse to live in fear, guilt, or shame. I acknowledge that I am complete in You, the Head of all power. Today, I walk in the reality of Your triumph. Quicken me by Your Spirit and let Your victory be evident in my health, my finances, and my family. Amen.
