THE PURITY & PURPOSE SERIES: 2026

TEXT: COLOSSIANS 3:5–7

MEMORY VERSE: “Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry.” (COLOSSIANS 3:5, KJV)

I. RECLAIMING THE MARTYR: THE REAL ST. VALENTINE

To understand the tragedy of modern Valentine’s Day celebrations, we must look back at the man behind the name. Valentine was not a promoter of lust; he was a courageous clergyman in the Roman Empire. During a time of intense persecution, he risked his life to minister to Christians and secretly marry soldiers who were forbidden from wedlock. He stood for the sanctity of the Christian home and the endurance of faith under pressure.

He was eventually martyred and buried on February 14th. For eight centuries, he was remembered for his Sacrifice and Service. It is a profound irony that a man who died for the sake of holy matrimony and Christian integrity is now the “patron saint” of a day characterized by “Eros,” “Inordinate Affection,” and “Fornication.”

The Modern Distortion: In 2026, the world has kidnapped Valentine. The “exchanging of gifts” has become a transaction for the “taking of dignity.” What the world calls “love” on this day is often a thin veil for concupiscence—a strong desire for carnal pleasure that ignores the soul of the other person.

II. THE THREE LOVES: A TRIANGULAR ANALYSIS

As a Christian youth, you must be “love-literate.” You must understand that not all “love” is created equal. The Greek language provides a clear roadmap for us:

Sturge (Storge): This is the natural, instinctive love shared among family members. It is the bond between parents and children. It is protective and foundational.

Eros: This is the love driven by sexual attraction and physical desire. While God created Eros to be enjoyed within the sacred boundary of marriage, outside of marriage, it becomes “Defilement.” It is impulsive, often selfish, and, if not governed by the Spirit, it leads to the “Uncleanness” mentioned in Colossians 3:5.

Agape: This is the “God-kind of Love.” It is unselfish, sacrificial, and unconditional. It does not look for what it can get; it looks for what it can give. This is the love that sent Jesus to the Cross. It is the only love that is truly “satisfying.”

The Trap: The world tries to convince you that “Eros” is the only love that matters on February 14th. They offer you “perishable gifts” to win over your “perishable flesh,” but they leave your spirit hollow.

III. THE CALL TO MORTIFICATION: COLOSSIANS 3:5

The Apostle Paul uses a very strong word: Mortify. This means to “put to death.”

• You cannot “negotiate” with lust.
• You cannot “reason” with inordinate affection.
• You must kill it.

To “mortify your members” on Valentine’s Day means to purposefully shut down the avenues of temptation. It means turning off the movies that stir up “evil concupiscence.” It means saying “No” to the party where you know the atmosphere will be sexually charged. It means recognizing that Covetousness (wanting what someone else has or wanting a pleasure that isn’t yours) is actually a form of Idolatry. When you put “Valentine’s Day pleasure” above God’s command, you have made a god out of your own desires.

IV. COMPREHENSIVE Q&A: NAVIGATING THE PRESSURE

Q1: Is it wrong for a Christian youth to give or receive a gift on Valentine’s Day?

Answer: A gift in itself is neutral. However, you must evaluate the Intent and the Atmosphere. If a gift is a “hook” meant to lead you into a compromise of your purity, it is a “poisoned apple.” If you are a youth, your primary focus should be on “Agape” towards all, rather than “Eros” towards one.

Q2: I feel lonely when I see my peers celebrating. How do I handle the ‘FOMO’ (Fear of Missing Out)?

Answer: Remember that what you see on social media is a “Whitewashed Tomb.” Many of those “celebrations” end in regret, heartbreak, and spiritual deadness. You aren’t missing out on love; you are being preserved for a Covenant. Use your “loneliness” as a signal to spend more time with the One who loves you perfectly—Jesus.

Q3: How can I ‘boldly show Christ’s love’ on a day like today without being ‘weird’?

Answer: You don’t have to be weird; you just have to be Different. Instead of a secret admirer card, write a “Thank You” note to your parents (Sturge). Instead of a date, go on a “Missions Outing” with your youth group. Lend a hand to the needy. When people ask why you aren’t “celebrating” like the world, use it as an opportunity to explain the “Real St. Valentine” and the “Real Agape Love.”

V. THE YOUTH DEFENSE STRATEGY FOR FEBRUARY 14TH

Change the Narrative: Don’t let the world define the day for you. Decide that February 14th is “Agape Day.”

Preach the Gospel: There is no greater “Love Letter” than the Gospel. Use the day to invite your friends to life-changing Christian programs.

The ‘No-Compromise’ Decree: Resolve in your heart that your dignity is not for sale. A box of chocolates or a designer watch is not worth your “Uncleanness” before God.

Be a Shining Example: Let your light shine by your modesty, your speech, and your purity. Show the world that you can be young, happy, and holy at the same time.

VI. REFLECTION & PRAYER SUITE

CHALLENGE: Are you boldly showing Christ’s love to others, or are you hiding in the shadows of the world’s eros-driven culture?

PRAYER POINTS:

The Mortification Grace: Father, I receive the grace to “mortify my members” today. I kill every seed of lust, inordinate affection, and uncleanness in my heart. I refuse to be a slave to my hormones, in Jesus’ Name!

The Agape Overflow: Lord, fill my heart with Your “Agape” love. Let me see people as You see them—not as objects for my pleasure, but as souls in need of Your grace, in Jesus’ Name!

The Courage to be Different: Father, give me the boldness to stand out today. Let my life be a “Counter-Culture” to the world’s lust. Help me to preach Your love and be a shining example of Christ to my peers, in Jesus’ Name!

The Hedge of Protection: Lord, protect every Christian girl and boy from the predators and the “gullible traps” of this day. Shield their dignity and keep them for Your glory, in Jesus’ Name!

QUOTE: Avoid eros-driven Valentine celebrations. True love is found at the Foot of the Cross, not in the back of a dark room.

FINAL THOUGHT: You are a royal priesthood and a holy nation. Don’t trade your crown for a Valentine’s “trinket” that will perish.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, thank You for the reminder of what true love is. Help me to show Your true love to the world today. Let my life reflect the sacrifice of St. Valentine and the purity of Christ. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
