THE TRUE GOD AND ETERNAL LIFE: BEYOND PHYSICAL SIGHT
MESSAGE BY: PASTOR CHRIS OYAKHILOME
BIBLE READING: 1 JOHN 5:20
1-YEAR PLAN: LUKE 10:1–24; JOSHUA 20–22
2-YEAR PLAN: ROMANS 7:1–11; PSALM 107
MEMORISE: “And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.” — (1 JOHN 5:20)
I. THE PARADOX OF THE PHYSICAL REVELATION
As we step into this first Saturday of April 2026, the Holy Spirit is guiding us into a profound realization concerning the nature of Christ. There is a common romanticized notion among many believers today: the idea that if they had lived two thousand years ago and walked the dusty streets of Galilee, they would have instantly fallen at the feet of Jesus, recognizing Him as the King of Glory.
But scriptural history tells a very different, and much more sobering, story. Recognition of deity is not a function of physical eyesight; it is a function of spiritual insight.
1. The Veil of Humanity
When Jesus walked the earth, He didn’t have a halo hovering over His head. He didn’t walk six inches off the ground, nor did He possess a physical “glow” that distinguished Him from the average carpenter of His day. Isaiah 53:2 prophesied this clearly: “…when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.” He was so physically unremarkable that when the temple guards came to arrest Him in Gethsemane, Judas had to identify Him with a kiss. If His divinity had been physically obvious, no such sign would have been necessary. He was one hundred percent God, yet He was “tabernacled” in a body that looked just like yours.
II. THE TRAGEDY OF UNRECOGNIZED GLORY
The Bible records a series of heartbreaking rejections by those who were physically closest to the Light.
His Own Nation: John 1:11 says, “He came unto his own, and his own received him not.” The religious elite—the Pharisees and Scribes who studied the prophecies daily—dismissed Him as a sinner and questioned His origin. They were looking for a political conqueror, but they missed the God of Glory standing in their midst.
The Healed but Reviled: In John 9, we see the man born blind who received his sight. Despite the undeniable miracle, the religious leaders ridiculed the man for his faith. They chose their tradition over the Truth standing right in front of them.
His Own Family: Perhaps most shocking of all is that His own siblings did not believe in Him (John 7:5) until after His resurrection and ascension. Imagine growing up in the same house as “Eternal Life” and failing to recognize who He was. At the foot of the cross, where was His family? Aside from His mother, they were absent. They saw the “brother,” but they missed the “Messiah.”
III. SPIRITUAL UNDERSTANDING: THE NEW BIRTH KEY
Why did some see a carpenter while others saw the Son of the Living God? Our opening verse in 1 John 5:20 gives us the answer: “the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true.”
This “understanding” is not an intellectual grasp of facts; it is the epignosis—the full, precise, and experiential knowledge of God. This only comes through the New Birth.
The Love Factor: We recognize and love Him today because the love of God has been shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost (Romans 5:5).
The Spirit Factor: You cannot call Jesus “Lord” except by the Holy Spirit.
Today, we don’t need to see Him physically to know He is real. We behold Him in the Word. When you look into the Scriptures, you aren’t reading a biography; you are looking into a mirror that reveals the Person of Christ and your identity in Him.
IV. ETERNAL LIFE IN A HUMAN BODY
Jesus was the “Great Mystery of Godliness” (1 Timothy 3:16). He was God manifest in the flesh. When He spoke, it was Eternal Life speaking. When He touched the leper, it was Eternal Life transferring vitality.
The world’s opinion of Jesus didn’t change the reality of who He was then, and the world’s skepticism today cannot change who He is now. He is the Great God of Glory, the Lord God Almighty, the God of Heaven and Earth.
John 17:3 tells us: “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.” To know Him is to possess the very life that makes God who He is. You are not just a “follower” of a religion; you are a partaker of the Divine Nature.
V. COMPREHENSIVE Q&A: DEEPENING YOUR RECOGNITION
Q1: If Jesus looks like a regular man, how will I recognize Him at His second coming?
Answer: The “appearing” of Jesus described in Titus 2:13 is the “glorious appearing.” He is no longer in His humiliated state; He is in His glorified state. However, the most important thing is that your spirit already knows Him. When He appears, the “Life” in you will respond to the “Life” in Him.
Q2: How can I help people who are ‘blind’ to who Jesus is?
Answer: You must realize that their unbelief is often a result of the “god of this world” blinding their minds (2 Corinthians 4:4). Your primary tool is intercession—praying that the “understanding” mentioned in 1 John 5:20 be granted to them—and then living as a witness of that life.
Q3: Does having ‘Eternal Life’ mean I will live forever physically?
Answer: Eternal Life (Zoe) is the quality of God’s life. It makes you superior to death and decay. While our physical bodies await final glorification, the Zoe in your spirit right now makes you an inhabitant of the “Death-Free Zone.”
VI. REFLECTION & PROPHETIC PRAYER
THOUGHT TO PONDER:
Am I seeking to see Jesus with my physical circumstances, or am I beholding His glory through the Word? The world says “seeing is believing,” but in the Kingdom, “believing is seeing.”
PROPHETIC DECREE FOR APRIL 4, 2026:
I decree that the eyes of your understanding are enlightened today! You shall see the Lord Jesus in a dimension you have never known before. I decree that because you are “in Him that is true,” every lie of the enemy concerning your identity, your health, and your future is dissolved. You are a carrier of Eternal Life! Decadence and corruption have no place in you. Walk today in the boldness of one who knows the True God!
PRAYER:
Dear Father, thank You for unveiling the person of the Lord Jesus to my heart—who He is—the great God, and eternal life. I behold Him in the Word and by the Spirit, acknowledging His Lordship, His deity, and His love. I am in Him that is true, even in His Son Jesus Christ. His life and nature are in me, working in every fiber of my being. I proclaim Him boldly to my world, and I thank You that many believe and receive this life through my witness, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
