RBT PASSAGE: NUMBERS 1-2
TEXT: MATTHEW 23:1–12
“The greatest among you will be your servant. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” (Matthew 23:11–12, NIV)
I. THE PHARISAIC COMPLEX: RELIGION WITHOUT REALITY
As we move through the first week of February 2026, the Holy Spirit is shining a diagnostic light on our motives. In Matthew 23, Jesus provides a forensic critique of the religious leaders of His day—the scribes and Pharisees. He acknowledges their Position (“they sit in Moses’ seat”) but condemns their Practice (“they do not practice what they preach”).
The Burden-Bondage (Matthew 23:4): These leaders were experts at “Legalistic Architecture.” They constructed heavy, cumbersome religious loads for others to carry but lacked the “Muscle of Mercy” to help them. In 2026, we must ask: Are we leading people to the “Light Yoke” of Christ, or are we burying them under the “Heavy Load” of human traditions?
The Theatre of Phylacteries (Matthew 23:5): Everything they did was “for show.” They widened their phylacteries (small boxes containing scripture) and lengthened their tassels to broadcast their “super-spirituality.” This is the Social Media Trap of the 1st Century—valuing “Digital Optics” over “Secret Obedience.
The Title-Thirst (Matthew 23:6-7): They craved the “Place of Honor” and the “Marketplace Greetings.” They were addicted to the prefix before their names. Jesus warns us that when the title becomes more important than the task, the leader has become a “Signpost” that points to himself rather than to the Savior.
II. THE ANATOMY OF TRUE LEADERSHIP: POINTING TO THE MASTER
To lead others to Jesus, we must first “get out of the way.” Jesus outlines three radical shifts for the Kingdom leader:
From Rabbi to Brother (v. 8): We must move from a hierarchy of “Teachers” to a community of “Brothers.” In the Kingdom, there is only one Teacher; the rest of us are fellow students.
From Father to Son (v. 9): By forbidding the title “Father” in a spiritual sense, Jesus is protecting the unique Fatherhood of God. We are not the “Source” of life for people; we are merely “Midwives” helping them encounter the True Father.
From Instructor to Instrument (v. 10): The Messiah is the only Instructor. Our role is not to give our “opinions” but to echo His “commands.”
III. COMPREHENSIVE Q&A: AUTHENTICITY VS. HYPOCRISY
Q1: If Jesus said ‘do everything they tell you’ (v. 3), does that mean we follow bad leaders?
Answer (Acts 5:29): We respect the “Office” but reject the “Example” if it contradicts the Word. We obey the truth they speak because it belongs to God, but we avoid the hypocrisy they live because it belongs to the flesh. Scriptural Proof: 1 Corinthians 11:1 – “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.”
Q2: How do I know if I am seeking recognition or glorifying God?
Answer (John 7:18): “Whoever speaks on their own does so to get glory for themselves, but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is a man of truth.” If you find yourself frustrated when you aren’t “thanked” or “recognized,” your motive is likely self-glory.
Q3: Does ‘Servant Leadership’ mean I let people walk all over me?
Answer (Mark 10:45): No. Jesus was the greatest servant, yet He was also the greatest Leader. Servanthood is about Utility, not Weakness. It is using your strength to lift others up, rather than using your position to keep them down.
IV. THE FIVE PILLARS OF HUMBLE INFLUENCE
Consistency (The Hidden Life): What you are in the “Closet” must match what you are in the “Courtyard.”
Empathy (The Finger-Lifting Grace): Never give a command you aren’t willing to help someone execute.
Deflection (The Signpost Strategy): Every time someone praises you, immediately “pass the trophy” to Jesus.
Accessibility (The Brotherly Spirit): Be reachable. Greatness is not measured by how many people serve you, but by how many you are accessible to serve.
Submission (The One-Teacher Rule): Be a perpetual learner under the Messiah.
V. EXPANDED INTERCESSORY & PROPHETIC SUITE
A. Personal Petitions: The Death of the Pharisee
The Mask-Removal Decree (Psalm 139:23-24): Father, search me and know my heart. Strip away every mask of hypocrisy. Deliver me from “Religious Showmanship.” Let my life be a transparent window through which others see Jesus, in Jesus’ Name!
The Servant-Heart Impartation (Philippians 2:5-7): Lord, let the mind of Christ be in me! I reject the “Rabbi Spirit.” I receive the “Towel of Service.” Help me to find joy in the lowest seat, in Jesus’ Name!
The Title-Detox (John 3:30): Father, I decrease that You may increase. Deliver me from the addiction to titles and the thirst for human applause. Let Your “Well Done” be the only recognition I crave, in Jesus’ Name!
B. Intercessory Requests: For Church Leadership
1. For the Pulpit (1 Peter 5:2-3): Lord, we pray for the leaders of the 2026 Church. Deliver us from being “lords over those entrusted to us.” Restore the heart of a shepherd to our bishops, pastors, and instructors, in Jesus’ Name!
2. For the ‘Heavy-Laden’ (Matthew 11:28): Father, we pray for those who have been “spiritually abused” by legalistic loads. Lead them away from the Pharisees and into the rest of the Messiah. Heal their view of You, in Jesus’ Name!
3. For Authentic Witnesses (Acts 1:8): Lord, raise up a generation of witnesses whose “Practice” matches their “Preach.” Let the world believe because they see the “Servant Messiah” in us, in Jesus’ Name!
C. Prophetic Declarations
4. The Exaltation of the Humble (James 4:10): I decree that as I humble myself under the mighty hand of God, He is lifting me up! My influence is growing, not for my name, but for His Fame!
5. The Signpost Anointing (John 12:32): Because I am “lifting up” Jesus, I am drawing all men to Him! I am a successful signpost! My life is leading many to the Kingdom!
INSIGHT: A leader who is full of himself leaves no room for the Holy Spirit to work. (Proverbs 16:18)
QUESTION FOR DEEP REFLECTION: If your titles and positions were taken away tomorrow, would people still see Jesus in your character?
PRAYER: Lord, keep me from hypocrisy. Help me to live with humility, serving others sincerely and reflecting Your grace in all I do. Let my life be a bridge, not a barrier, to Your Cross. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
