Revelation 22:1-6: 1. And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb. 2. In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. 3. And there shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and His servants shall serve Him. 4. They shall see His face, and His name shall be on their foreheads. 5. There shall be no night there: They need no lamp nor light of the sun, for the Lord God gives them light. And they shall reign forever and ever. 6. Then he said to me, “These words are faithful and true.”

INTRODUCTION: THE FINAL SCENE OF GOD’S PLAN

The Book of Revelation closes with a magnificent, breathtaking vision of the ultimate destiny of the righteous: the New Heaven, the New Earth, and the Holy City, New Jerusalem. This final scene is not merely a beautiful backdrop; it is the ultimate fulfillment of God’s redemptive plan, the glorious reversal of everything that went wrong in the Garden of Eden. It is the destination where the power of Christ’s finished work is fully realized in physical and eternal reality.

Our text today, Revelation 22:1-6, details this perfection, focusing on two triumphant declarations: No More Curse and No More Sickness. These statements are not just poetic promises; they are theological realities that confirm the utter supremacy of the Blood of Jesus. When Adam and Eve sinned by eating the forbidden fruit, they ushered in the curse—a judicial decree that brought death, pain, toil, and separation from the source of life. God drove them out and placed a flaming sword to guard the Tree of Life, ensuring that man, now under the dominion of sin, could not live forever in his sinful state.

But now, through the profound work of Jesus Christ, the issue of sin has been irrevocably dealt with. He gave us forgiveness of sin through His blood, and the gates of glory are wide open. In the New Jerusalem, there will be no sin, no sickness, and emphatically, “there shall be no more curse” (Revelation 22:3).

This vision serves as our ultimate hope and our present mandate. Every believer must live in the light of this assured destiny, knowing that the struggles of today are temporary, but the joy of the New Jerusalem is eternal.

I. THE ABOLITION OF THE CURSE (REVELATION 22:3)

The promise, “there shall be no more curse,” is one of the most powerful statements in the entire Bible. It signifies the complete eradication of every consequence that resulted from Adam’s fall. To understand its magnitude, we must review what the curse entailed.

A. The Curse in Genesis (The Triple Dominion)

The Genesis curse, detailed in Chapter 3, brought three primary dominions of destruction into the world:

The Curse on the Earth (Toil): “Cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground…” (Genesis 3:17-19). This introduced toil, struggle, lack of fulfillment, and physical death.

The Curse on Woman (Pain and Submission): “I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee” (Genesis 3:16). This introduced pain, sorrow, and relational discord.

The Curse on the Serpent (Satan’s Dominion): “Upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life…” (Genesis 3:14). This established the dominion of the enemy and the separation between God and man.

The curse means that everything in the physical realm—from relationships to labor to health—operates with built-in decay, resistance, and eventual failure. This is the accursed reality we live in today.

B. Christ, Our Curse-Bearer

The only reason the future promise of “no more curse” is faithful and true is because Jesus became the curse for us in the past. “Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree” (Galatians 3:13).

When Jesus hung on the cross, He was not just suffering physically; He was judicially absorbing every single consequence of the Genesis curse and the curses brought by the breaking of God’s law. He took the toil, the pain, the separation, and the ultimate death so that we could be set free.

Because He broke the power of the curse at the root, in the New Jerusalem, every shadow of it is removed. Ancestral curses, Adamic curses, or even curses brought by personal sin and misbehavior will never exist again because the ultimate cause—sin—will be absent, and the ultimate cure—Christ’s sacrifice—will be fully actualized.

The fact that the “throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it” (Rev 22:3) guarantees the removal of the curse, because where God’s immediate, unveiled presence resides, no accursed thing can remain.

II. THE RESTORATION OF LIFE AND HEALTH (NO MORE SICKNESS)

The second powerful implication of the New Jerusalem is the absolute end of sickness, disease, and physical infirmity. This is vividly portrayed through the restoration of the River of Life and the Tree of Life.

A. The Pure River of the Water of Life (Eternal Sustenance)

“And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb.” (Revelation 22:1)

Water, throughout scripture, represents the life-giving, cleansing, and sustaining power of the Holy Spirit. This river, flowing directly from the Throne, signifies the unhindered, pure, and eternal flow of God’s own life and power throughout the city.

In our current world, we constantly deal with polluted sources, scarcity, and decay. In the New Jerusalem, the source of life is inexhaustible and perfectly pure. This pure flow ensures that spiritual, mental, and physical life is maintained at its absolute zenith, completely eliminating the root cause of sickness, which is corruption and decay.

B. The Tree of Life: Leaves for Healing (Eternal Health)

“In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.” (Revelation 22:2)

The Tree of Life, guarded by the flaming sword in Genesis, is now fully accessible. This is the ultimate sign of restoration. The presence of the Tree, yielding its fruit every month, signifies eternal, perpetual life and sustenance for the inhabitants.

Crucially, the text says: “The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.” While the inhabitants of the New Jerusalem will have glorified bodies and will not need to be healed from sickness, the phrase carries deep symbolic meaning:

It is a constant reminder of the redemption achieved: It shows that the solution to disease and decay (which plagued the former earth) is eternally present in God’s provision.

It affirms health as the final state: It confirms that the ultimate, final state of the redeemed is one of perfect, uninterrupted health.

It points to the healing power of the Gospel: The leaves symbolize the life-giving nature of Christ’s provision which brings healing to the whole creation.

In the New Jerusalem, no sickness, no pain, no sorrow, and no death can exist because the source of Eternal Life is literally flowing through the city, and the sustenance for that life is eternally available. We will eat freely from the Tree of Life and live forever with God.

III. THE GLORY OF GOD’S PRESENCE: NO MORE DARKNESS

The perfection of the Holy City is not just defined by what is absent (curse, sickness, sorrow) but by what is overwhelmingly present: the Glory of God.

A. Seeing His Face and Bearing His Name (Rev 22:4)

“They shall see His face, and His name shall be on their foreheads.”

To see His face is the ultimate intimacy, the removal of the veil that separates the finite from the infinite. This is the deepest desire of the redeemed heart—unhindered communion with God. This guarantees perfect joy and perfect freedom, for in His presence is fullness of joy (Psalm 16:11).

To have His Name on their foreheads signifies ownership, authority, and identity. We will be permanently identified as His—no longer carrying the mark of the world or the spirit of rebellion. This guarantees security and eternal purpose as servants who “shall serve Him” (Rev 22:3). This service will not be toil under the curse, but glorious, joyful, purposeful function in the presence of the King.

B. The Eternal Day (Rev 22:5)

“There shall be no night there: They need no lamp nor light of the sun, for the Lord God gives them light. And they shall reign forever and ever.”

The abolition of night is the abolition of all things associated with darkness: fear, uncertainty, hidden works of evil, loneliness, and the need for rest due to weariness.

The New Jerusalem needs no lamp or light of the sun because the Lord God Himself is the illumination. The Glory that resided in the Holy of Holies will saturate the entire City. This immediate, permanent presence of God guarantees:

No Sorrow: Sorrow hides in the dark. In God’s light, there is perpetual comfort.
No Pain: Pain often intensifies at night. In God’s eternal day, all sensation is aligned with perfect well-being.
No Exhaustion: Since the energy source is God Himself, the need for sleep and rest due to physical burnout is eliminated.

And because of this eternal light and eternal life, we will not just reside there; we “shall reign forever and ever.” We move from being victims of the curse to being eternal co-rulers with Christ.

IV. THE CERTAINTY OF THE PROMISE: A CALL TO PREPARATION

The angel delivering this message to John concluded with a powerful affirmation: “These words are faithful and true.” (Revelation 22:6)

This is not a myth, a legend, or a possibility; it is a guaranteed reality secured by the blood of the Lamb. Every prophecy concerning this eternal City is absolutely true and “must shortly take place”—it is the next major event on God’s prophetic timetable.

A. The Imperative of Holiness

The profound certainty of this glorious future imposes an absolute mandate on our present lives: the imperative of holiness and purity.

If nothing accursed can enter that city, and if sin is forever barred, then we must dedicate ourselves daily to living free from sin’s dominion. The promise is for those who overcome, those who endure, and those who maintain their garment of righteousness. We cannot afford to compromise our faith or pollute our lives with the temporary, fleeting pleasures of this world.

B. Do Your Best to Enter God’s Kingdom

The final call is simple, yet profound: Beloved, do your best to enter God’s kingdom.

This means:

Prioritize the Eternal: Let the reality of the New Jerusalem dictate your choices today. Do not sell your eternal birthright for the temporal pottage of materialism, lust, or convenience.

Labor in Faith: Work tirelessly for the spread of the Gospel, knowing that every soul you reach will share in this glorious, curse-free, sickness-free destiny.

Walk in Righteousness: Live a life of devotion, obedience, and fervent prayer, allowing the Holy Spirit to conform you to the image of Christ, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life to this eternal City.

We have been redeemed from the curse and death through Jesus Christ. The promise of no more curse, no more sickness, no more night, and no more sorrow is our inheritance. Let us live in the light of that hope, demonstrating the reality of our future glory here on earth, even now, until we step into that eternal, luminous City where we shall see His face forever.

PRAYER

Dear Lord, thank You for the certain hope of the New Jerusalem, a city where the curse is abolished, and sickness is unknown. I receive the strength and grace today to live a life worthy of this glorious destiny. Help me to walk in purity, self-control, and unwavering faith. I confess that I will not compromise my eternal inheritance for any temporary pleasure or material gain. Give me the passion to preach the Gospel and lead many to the Kingdom, that they too may share in the perfect freedom of that Holy City. Grant me the strength to live for you and to enter the New Jerusalem, Amen.
