RBT PASSAGE: LEVITICUS 24-25 (The Law of the Showbread)
BEYOND PHYSICAL SUSTENANCE
MEMORY VERSE: “Then Jesus declared, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.'” (John 6:35, NIV)
TEXT: JOHN 6:28-40
I. THE SPIRITUAL CONTEXT: THE SHOWBREAD AND THE REALITY
In today’s Bible reading from Leviticus 24, we see the instruction for the “Bread of the Presence” (Showbread). Twelve loaves were to be set before the Lord continually. This was a “shadow” of the truth we find in John 6. While the priests in the Old Testament ate the physical showbread within the Tabernacle, Jesus comes as the “Living Showbread” who comes out of the Tabernacle to give life to the entire world.
The Jews in John 6 were looking for a “Repeat Performance.” They had seen the multiplication of physical loaves and wanted a king who would provide social security and free healthcare. They were “Stomach-Driven.” Jesus, however, was “Soul-Driven.” He wanted to move them from the Commodity (the bread) to the Creator (the Bread-Maker).
II. THE ANATOMY OF THE BREAD OF LIFE
What does it actually mean when Jesus calls Himself “The Bread?
Necessity, Not Luxury: Bread is a staple, not a dessert. You can live without cake, but in the ancient world, you couldn’t survive without bread. Jesus is saying He is not an “optional extra” for your life; He is your survival.
The Process of Preparation: To become bread, wheat must be planted, must “die” in the earth, must be harvested, threshed, and finally pass through the fire. This beautifully illustrates Christ’s journey: His incarnation (planting), His death, and the “fire” of God’s judgment He endured on the cross to become “edible” for our salvation.
The Daily Requirement: You don’t eat once for a lifetime. Bread is a daily need. “Give us this day our daily bread” refers not just to the physical loaf, but to the daily communion with the Person of Jesus.
III. QUESTION AND ANSWER SECTION (Q&A)
To deepen our understanding, let us address the questions often raised by this discourse:
Q1: Why did the Jews ask for a ‘Sign’ (v. 30) right after Jesus had just fed 5,000 people?
Answer: Human greed is never satisfied by miracles. They wanted a “Continuous Sign” like the Manna. They were looking for a political Messiah who would provide economic ease. They weren’t looking for a Savior from sin; they were looking for a Savior from poverty.
Q2: What is the ‘Work of God‘ mentioned in Verse 29?
Answer: The Jews asked for “Works” (plural)—a list of rules. Jesus corrected them with “Work” (singular). The only work that matters for salvation is Believing. Every other good work (charity, kindness, service) must flow from this belief, not as a means to it.
Q3: What does it mean to ‘Never Hunger’ (v. 35)? Believers still get hungry!
Answer: Jesus is speaking of the Ontological Hunger—the deep, existential void in the human heart that tries to fill itself with money, sex, power, or fame. Once you possess Christ, that “Hole in the Heart” is filled. You no longer “hunger” for a reason to exist; you have found Life itself.
Q4: Will Jesus ever reject someone who has lived a very bad life?
Answer: Verse 37 is the “Golden Promise” of the New Testament: “Whoever comes to me I will never drive away.” There is no sin too great for the Bread of Life to cover. His “Shelf-life” never expires, and His grace is never rationed.
IV. CASE STUDY: THE KINDNESS OF THE EXTRA SANDWICH
Consider the story of the little boy mentioned in the introduction. He didn’t just give bread; he gave Love wrapped in Bread.
- The Physical Need: The friend was hungry. The boy met the immediate need.
- The Spiritual Pointer: The boy’s action was a reflection of his mother’s teaching (“No one should stay hungry”).
In 2026, we are the “Little Boys” and “Little Girls” of the Kingdom. We must pack “Extra Sandwiches” for our colleagues and neighbors—meeting their physical needs through charity—while pointing them to the “Mother/Father” (God) who provides the Eternal Bread.
V. EXPANDED PRAYER AND INTERCESSION SUITE
A. Personal Petitions: Hunger for the Divine
Appetite Correction: Father, I repent for chasing “junk food”—the vanities and temporary pleasures of 2026. Today, I receive a fresh appetite for the Bread of Life. Let my soul pant for Your Word more than for my daily food!
Belief as Work: Lord, help my unbelief. I receive the grace to do the “Work of God” today by trusting You completely with my finances, my health, and my family.
Resurrection Confidence: Father, thank You for the promise that You will raise me up on the last day. Deliver me from the fear of death and the anxiety of the future, for I am hidden in the Bread of Life.
B. Intercessory Requests: Feeding the World
4. For the Spiritually Malnourished: Father, we pray for those who are wealthy in “physical bread” but starving in their souls. Open their eyes to see that money cannot buy the satisfaction found in Christ.
5. For the Physically Hungry: Lord, we remember those who literally have no bread today. Use us as “Sandwich-Bearers.” Provide for the needy and let our charity lead them to Your Cross.
6. For the Church: Father, let the Church stop selling “stones” to the people. Let our pulpits be filled with the “True Bread” of the Word, not just motivational speeches or social theories.
C. Prophetic Declarations
7. Termination of Thirst: I decree that every “dry season” in my soul is over! Because I have come to the Bread of Life, my spiritual thirst is quenched forever.
8. The Security Decree: I am “Given” by the Father to the Son. Therefore, I shall not be lost! I shall not be driven away! I am preserved for the Last Day!
VI. INSIGHT FOR THE WEEK
Physical bread goes through the digestive system and is gone; Spiritual bread enters the spirit and becomes a part of your eternal DNA. Which one are you spending more money on?
THOUGHT TO PONDER: A man who eats only physical bread is a “living corpse” waiting to die. A man who eats the Bread of Life is a “dying body” waiting to live forever.
