I. THE ARCHITECTURE OF GROWTH: WHY MENTORSHIP MATTERS

As we step into this Sunday, March 29th, 2026, we must address one of the most critical “success factors” for any teenager or young adult: The company you keep and the voices you follow. In the natural world, iron cannot sharpen itself; it requires the friction of another piece of iron to become effective. In the same way, you cannot fulfill your divine destiny in isolation. Godly mentors are the “sharpening stones” of life. They are experienced individuals who have walked the paths you are currently stepping onto, and they carry the wisdom, faith, and foresight to help you become the best version of yourself.

Mentorship is a strategic relationship designed to:

Shorten your learning curve: Why spend ten years making the same mistakes someone else already made?

Challenge your comfort zone: A good mentor pushes you to grow spiritually and intellectually.

Refine your character: They see the “rough edges” in your personality and help you smooth them out.

II. THE JETHRO PRINCIPLE: WISDOM IN DELEGATION

Our Bible reading in Exodus 18:24–25 provides a classic example of mentorship in action. Moses was the man of the hour—the great deliverer of Israel. Yet, even Moses had a “blind spot.” He was trying to judge every single dispute in Israel by himself, which led to physical exhaustion and inefficiency.

1. The Voice of Experience

Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, observed the situation and didn’t just criticize; he provided a solution. He mentored Moses on the art of Delegation. He advised Moses to choose able men—men of truth and fearers of God—to share the burden.

2. The Power of Humility

The miracle of this story isn’t just Jethro’s advice; it is Moses’ humility. Despite being the one who spoke to God face-to-face, Moses “hearkened to the voice of his father-in-law.” He didn’t let his title or his miracles stop him from receiving a practical solution. Because Moses listened to his mentor, the entire leadership structure of Israel was strengthened.

III. THE ANATOMY OF A GODLY MENTOR

How do you know who is fit to “sharpen” you? In 2026, the internet is full of “influencers,” but a mentor is different from an influencer.

Spiritual Alignment: A godly mentor will never lead you away from the Word of God. Their primary goal is to keep you aligned with God’s purpose.

Corrective Love: A real mentor is not a “Yes-Man.” They will correct you when you make a mistake, but they will do it in love, not for condemnation.

Exemplary Lifestyle: You should be able to look at their marriage, their finances, and their walk with God and say, “I want that kind of result.”

Practical Solutions: Like Jethro, they don’t just give spiritual theories; they give you practical guidance on how to navigate the challenges of your stage in life.

IV. COMPREHENSIVE Q&A: NAVIGATING MENTORSHIP AS A TEEN

Q1: What if I don’t have anyone around me who looks like a ‘Jethro’?

Answer: Start by looking at your local church leaders, your God-fearing teachers, or even your parents. However, if you truly feel isolated, Prayer is your first tool. Prayerfully ask God to lead you to a mentor. God is interested in your success and will connect you with the right person at the right time.

Q2: Can I have a mentor I’ve never met (like an author or a preacher)?

Answer: Yes! These are called “Mentors from Afar.” You can be mentored by Pastor E.A. Adeboye by studying his books and devotionals daily. However, it is also very important to have a “Local Mentor”—someone you can actually talk to, who can hold you accountable and pray with you in person.

Q3: What do I do if a mentor asks me to do something I’m uncomfortable with?

Answer: Mentorship must always be “fit in the Lord.” If a mentor asks you to lie, cheat, or compromise your Christian values, they have ceased to be a “Godly Mentor.” In that case, you must prioritize God’s Word over their advice.

V. A MESSAGE TO THE TEENAGER OF 2026

My dear child, you are at a stage where your choices will determine the height of your destiny. Do not walk alone. Having a godly mentor will help you navigate the pressures of peer influence and social media. When you fail, they will inspire you to get back up. When you succeed, they will keep you humble.

I decree today that the “Jethro” for your next level shall appear! In this year 2026, you will not wander in confusion. I command every wrong influence and “blunting” relationship to be removed from your life. I receive for you the spirit of humility to listen and the spirit of discernment to choose wisely. You shall fulfill your destiny in record time, in Jesus’ Name!

For Divine Connection: Father, please connect me with the godly mentors You have ordained to help me fulfill my destiny.

For a Teachable Heart: Lord, take away pride from me. Help me to listen to wise counsel just as Moses listened to Jethro.

For Discernment: Father, help me to see beyond the surface. Let me not be deceived by those who look good but have no spiritual substance.

For Growth: Lord, use the people in my life to sharpen me. Let my countenance and my character shine brighter because of the company I keep.
