SECRETS TO LONGEVITY – PART II: THE MILITANT SPIRIT
MESSAGE BY: PASTOR E.A. ADEBOYE
BIBLE READING: EPHESIANS 6:10–17
BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: 1 CHRONICLES 20–23
HYMN: 12 – ONWARD CHRISTIAN SOLDIERS
MEMORISE: “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” — (JAMES 4:7)
I. THE BALANCE OF DESTINY: KNOWING THE BATTLE
Yesterday, we explored the first secret to longevity—the wisdom of strategic withdrawal and knowing when to hide. We saw that Elijah stayed alive and relevant because he knew when to retreat to the Brook Cherith. However, if all you ever do is hide, you will never possess your possessions. Longevity is not just about avoiding danger; it is about overcoming the “thief” who comes specifically to cut your life short.
To stay on the path God has set for you until you are 80, 90, or 100 years old, you must master the second secret: Knowing when to fight. In the journey of destiny, there are seasons where retreating is an act of wisdom, but there are other seasons where retreating is an act of spiritual suicide. When you are confronted by the devil, you do not run, you do not hide, and you do not negotiate. You stand and you fight.
II. THE NATURE OF THE ADVERSARY
Many believers fail to last long because they misunderstand the character of the enemy. The devil is not a “gentleman” who respects boundaries. According to John 10:10, his mission is three-fold: to steal your joy, to kill your body, and to destroy your legacy.
1. The Deception of “Coexistence”
Some people think they can enter into a “non-aggression pact” with darkness. They think that by maintaining certain “family traditions” or making quiet sacrifices to ancestral deities, the devil will leave them alone. This is a fatal mistake. The devil is the father of lies (John 8:44). He never keeps a deal. Every “handshake” with the devil is a trap designed to enslave you. You cannot partner with him for protection; you can only resist him for victory.
2. The Persistence of the Wicked
The devil does not play fair. If he sees a crack in your marriage, he won’t stop until the house is divided. If he sees a weakness in your health, he will press until it becomes a terminal condition. Longevity requires a “holy aggression” that says, “This far and no further!”
III. THE ARCHITECTURE OF THE ARMOUR
In Ephesians 6:10–17, the Holy Spirit outlines the believer’s combat gear. There is a “Helmet of Salvation” for the mind, a “Breastplate of Righteousness” for the heart, and a “Shield of Faith” to stop the arrows of the enemy.
The Missing Piece:
If you look closely at the description of the Roman-style armour the Apostle Paul was describing, you will notice something profound: There is no piece of armour to protect your back. God did not provide a “Backplate of Fear.” This design is a prophetic instruction. It means that as long as you are facing the enemy, you are protected. The moment you turn your back to run away in fear, you expose your vital organs to the enemy’s attack. To run from the devil is to invite a strike from behind. Therefore, the secret to staying alive is to stay facing the foe.
IV. BATTLES ON MULTIPLE FRONTS (2026 CONTEXT)
In this year 2026, the wrestle is not against flesh and blood, but the battlefields have expanded. To last long, you must fight for your territory in these areas:
1. Fighting for the Home
If you observe strange arguments, coldness, or shadows in your marriage, do not assume it is “just a phase.” A family meeting is a physical tool, but the roots are often spiritual. 2 Corinthians 10:3-4 reminds us that our weapons are “mighty through God.” You must go into your prayer closet and send the devil packing with the Sword of the Spirit. Fight for your peace!
2. Fighting for the Ministry and Career
If strange obstacles are appearing in the work God gave you, or if your business is being targeted by inexplicable “bad luck,” do not fold your arms. Get up and fight! The “rulers of darkness” specialize in stagnating the progress of the righteous. Longevity in business and ministry belongs to those who refuse to let the devil steal their harvest.
V. COMPREHENSIVE Q&A: THE STRATEGY OF RESISTANCE
Q1: How do I ‘fight’ if I am physically weak or sick?
Answer: The fight is not with your muscles; it is with your mouth and your faith. The “Sword of the Spirit” is the Word of God spoken in faith. Even from a sickbed, you can resist the spirit of infirmity by decreeing, “I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord” (Psalm 118:17).
Q2: James 4:7 says to ‘Submit to God’ first. Why is this important?
Answer: You cannot resist the devil if you are not submitted to God. Submission is your “legal standing.” When you are fully under God’s authority, you carry God’s authority. The devil doesn’t flee because of you; he flees because of the One you represent.
Q3: How do I know when to ‘Hide’ (Secret 1) and when to ‘Fight’ (Secret 2)?
Answer: Hide from the “pressure of men” and the “unnecessary strife of tongues,” but fight the “attacks of the devil.” When the enemy comes to steal your life or your rights, that is the time for war.
VI. THE 2026 PROPHETIC CHALLENGE: NO RETREAT
The world in May 2026 is full of spiritual wickedness in high places. But you are a soldier of the Cross.
1: Stand Your Ground: Refuse to be intimidated by “ugly heads” the devil raises in your family or career.
2: Use the Sword: Find a specific scripture that addresses your problem and “swing” it through prayer and confession.
3: Forward March: Like the hymn says, we are “Marching as to war.” Soldiers don’t retire from the front lines until the victory is won.
VII. REFLECTION & ACTION POINT
THOUGHT TO PONDER:
Is there an area of my life where I have turned my back and started running? Am I trying to “negotiate” with a liar, or am I resisting him with the Word?
ACTION POINT:
1: Identify the Foe: Pinpoint one persistent problem in your life that you have been “tolerating.” Label it as a work of the devil.
2: Mount the Resistance: Tonight, spend time in aggressive prayer. Do not ask God to “please help”; command the devil to “flee” in the Name of Jesus, based on James 4:7.
3: Check Your Armour: Ensure you are walking in truth and righteousness today. Submission to God is your greatest defense.
PRAYER:
Father, I thank You for making me a soldier in Your army. I thank You for the weapons of our warfare that are not carnal. Lord, I receive the grace to stand my ground. I refuse to turn my back on the enemy. Today, I resist every work of the devil in my marriage, my health, my finances, and my ministry. I wield the Sword of the Spirit—the Word of God—and I decree that the thief is caught and must flee! I shall last long, I shall fulfill my days, and I shall see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living, in Jesus’ mighty Name. Amen.
PROPHETIC DECREE:
I decree today that you are an “overcomer”! I command every spirit of fear to depart from you now! You shall no longer be a victim of the devil’s deceits. Because you have chosen to stand and fight, I decree that the gates of hell shall not prevail against you! Your marriage is secured! Your business is protected! Your body is vitalized! I decree that you will not end your race prematurely; you will march onward to total victory, in the mighty Name of Jesus!
