WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM GOD TODAY? – THE POWER OF THE SPECIFIC REQUEST

I. THE SOVEREIGNTY OF THE HUMAN WILL

As we gather on this first Sunday of May 2026, the Holy Spirit is directing our hearts toward a profound and often overlooked principle of the miraculous: The necessity of the human will. In our memorise, we see that even the Almighty God, in His infinite power and sovereignty, respects the boundaries of the human choice. He sets the options—life or death, blessing or cursing—but He leaves the final selection to us. He even goes as far as to “coach” us on the right answer, saying, “therefore choose life,” but He will not force that choice upon you.

In the spiritual realm, God is a Gentleman. He does not violate the “Free Will” He gave to man at creation. This is why many people walk the earth in bondage, poverty, or sickness, not because God is unable to deliver them, but because they have not yet made a definitive, specific choice to be free.

II. THE QUESTION AT BETHESDA: “WILT THOU BE MADE WHOLE?”

In John 5:1–14, we find Jesus at the pool of Bethesda. The atmosphere was one of collective misery—a “great multitude” of blind, halt, and withered folk. Amidst this crowd sat a man who had been in a state of infirmity for thirty-eight years. Thirty-eight years is a lifetime of stagnation. It is long enough for a man to lose his identity and become “the sick man by the pool.

When Jesus approached him, the question He asked seemed almost insulting at first glance: “Wilt thou be made whole?” (v. 6). To the human mind, the answer should have been obvious. Why else would he be at the pool? But Jesus, the Son of God, knew something we often miss. He knew that some people become “comfortable” in their discomfort. They become habituated to their problems until the problem becomes a crutch, an excuse, or even a source of attention.

Jesus was checking the man’s intent. He was asking, “Are you ready for the responsibility of being well? Are you ready to stop being a beggar and start being a worker? Do you truly want to change your state?”

III. THE BLIND MAN’S PRECISION

We see this principle repeated in the case of Bartimaeus in Luke 18:40–41. Here was a man shouting through a crowd, obviously blind, wearing the garment of a beggar. Yet, when he was finally brought face-to-face with the Master, Jesus asked: “What wilt thou that I shall do unto thee?” Jesus did not assume Bartimaeus wanted sight. He could have wanted money, or a better coat, or just a meal. Bartimaeus had to define his miracle. He had to say, “Lord, that I may receive my sight.” Precision in prayer is the key that unlocks the door of the supernatural. God does not reward “vague” requests; He rewards “faith-filled” specifics.

IV. THE SURPRISING TRUTH ABOUT SECONDARY GAIN

There was a time when we were praying for a certain woman who was severely ill. We prayed with fervency and fasting, yet there was no change. Knowing that our God is the Great Physician, I was puzzled and took the matter to Him in the secret place. I asked, “Father, why is there no breakthrough?”

The Lord’s response was shocking: “Have you asked her if she wants to be healed?” I thought it was a strange question, but I obeyed. I sat with the woman and asked, “Sister, do you truly want to get well?” To my utter amazement, she said, “No.” When I asked why, she explained: “When I was healthy, my husband was never home. He would go straight from work to the club every night. Since I became sick, he has become a changed man. He comes straight home to take care of me. He is attentive and loving. If I get well, he will go back to the club. I would rather be sick and have my husband’s presence than be healthy and alone.”

This woman was using her infirmity as a “hook” to keep her marriage together. She had chosen a curse to achieve a blessing. Beloved, God will not override such a decision. If you are holding onto your problem because of the “secondary gains” it brings you—be it pity, government benefits, or the attention of loved ones—you might never see the hand of God at work.

V. COMPREHENSIVE Q&A: NAVIGATING YOUR REQUESTS IN 2026

Q1: How do I know if I have become ‘comfortable’ with my problem?

Answer: Ask yourself: “What would my life look like if this problem disappeared today? Am I afraid of the new responsibilities health or wealth would bring?” If you find yourself making excuses for why things “can’t” change, you have become comfortable in the porch of Bethesda.

Q2: Does God care about ‘small’ or ‘material’ requests?

Answer: In 2026, many are facing modern challenges—technological, financial, and relational. God is the God of all flesh. Whether it is a healing of the body, a breakthrough in your career, or the salvation of a child, He asks the same question: “What do you want Me to do for you?” Nothing is too small or too big for His attention.

Q3: What if I have asked specifically but haven’t received it yet?

Answer: Check your heart. Is there sin hindering the flow? In John 5:14, Jesus told the man, “sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.” Ensure that your life is in alignment with God’s Word. Also, ensure your request aligns with His will. If you have done these, then persist. Bartimaeus didn’t stop shouting until Jesus stood still.

VI. THE 2026 PROPHETIC CHALLENGE: THE ALTAR OF SPECIFICS

The world in May 2026 is full of noise and distractions. People are praying general prayers: “Lord, bless me,” or “Lord, help us.” But today, the Master is standing still for you. He is asking you to look Him in the eye and state your case.

• If you want a job, don’t just ask for “work”—describe the position.

• If you want healing, don’t just ask for “strength”—call out the name of the infirmity.

• If you want salvation for your house, call out the names of your seed.

God has set before you Life and Death. Freedom and Bondage. Prosperity and Poverty. The menu of Heaven is open, and the Great Physician is present. What is your choice?

VII. REFLECTION & ACTION POINT

THOUGHT TO PONDER:

If Jesus walked into my room right now and asked, “What shall I do for you?”, would I have a clear, specific answer, or would I start listing all the reasons why my “water hasn’t been troubled”?

ACTION POINT:

Be Bold: Write down three specific things you want from God this month. Not generalities, but specifics.

Examine Motives: Check if you are holding onto any “secondary gains” from your current struggles. Repent if necessary.

The Specific Cry: Spend 15 minutes today calling on the name of Jesus, specifically presenting those three requests. Don’t let Him go until He answers.

PRAYER:

Father, I thank You because You are the God who answers by fire. I thank You because You respect my will and value my choice. Today, I choose life. I choose health. I choose prosperity and spiritual vitality. Lord, specifically, I ask for [mention your specific need]. I refuse to be comfortable with my infirmity. I refuse to use my problems as a crutch. I rise today, I take up my bed, and I walk into my season of testimony, in the mighty Name of Jesus. Amen.

PROPHETIC DECREE:

I decree today that the era of “38 years” of stagnation in your life is officially over! Because you have made a choice for life, the Great Physician is visiting your “porch” now! I command every spirit of comfort with failure to be cast out! Receive clarity of mind! Receive a specific breakthrough for your specific request! By the time this month of May is over, you shall no longer be “the one waiting for the water”—you shall be the one testifying of the Master! In Jesus’ mighty Name, it is settled!
