REVERSING OPPORTUNITIES

I. THE MYTH OF THE PERMANENTLY LOST CHANCE

As we begin this second week of April 2026, the Holy Spirit is deconstructing a popular worldly proverb: “Opportunity knocks but once,” or its variation, “A lost opportunity can never be regained.” While this may be a law in the secular world of economics and human timing, it is not a law in the Kingdom of God.

In the realm of the spirit, time is not a straight line that disappears; it is a resource under the feet of the Almighty. When God decides to intervene, He can reach into your yesterday and pull a “lost” chance into your today. According to Deuteronomy 30:3, God specializes in turning captivity and “gathering” what was scattered. This includes scattered dreams and misplaced opportunities.

II. THE FEDERAL SCHOLARSHIP TESTIMONY: DIVINE COINCIDENCE

I remember a personal experience from the 1960s. At that time, I was serving as a games master at Okeigbo/Ifetedo Grammar School. During a sports competition in Akure, I struck up a conversation with the games master of the host school. It was a casual chat, one of many a young man might have in the course of his career.

Fast forward a year: I was at the University of Lagos pursuing my Master’s degree in Mathematics. I had applied to the Federal Government for a scholarship, but after twelve months of silence, I concluded that my application had been rejected. I struggled and continued paying the fees from my own meager resources.

One day, while walking across the UNILAG campus, I “happened” to run into that same games master from Akure. He was no longer at the school; he was now working with the Federal Ministry of Education. When I mentioned my failed scholarship application, he was shocked. He told me that I was the only person who had applied for a postgraduate scholarship in Mathematics that year, and the board had unanimously decided to grant it to me! The “interview” I was waiting for would have been a mere formality, but the notification had somehow been lost.

To the glory of God, two weeks after that “chance” meeting, I received a letter granting me a full scholarship. Not only that, but it was backdated to the very first day of my Master’s programme. God didn’t just give me the opportunity; He reversed the clock so I wouldn’t lose a kobo. I decree today: every good opportunity you thought was gone forever is being backdated and restored to you in Jesus’ name!

III. THE RESTORATION OF PETER: REVERSING SPIRITUAL FAILURE

In our Bible reading today (John 21:15-19), we see the ultimate “reversal.” Peter had committed what many would consider the unforgivable sin for a disciple: he denied his Lord three times at the moment of greatest need.

1. The Grief of the Pigsty

Peter was so heartbroken by his failure that he attempted to resign from his calling. He said, “I go a fishing” (John 21:3). He wasn’t just going for a hobby; he was returning to his old life because he felt he had blown his opportunity to be a fisher of men.

2. The Three-Fold Reinstatement

Notice how Jesus reversed the denial. Peter denied Him three times by a fire of coals; Jesus restored him three times by a fire of coals on the beach. To every “I don’t know Him,” Jesus offered a “Feed my sheep.

When God reverses an opportunity, He also reverses the nature of the person. The Peter who once trembled before a servant girl became the Peter who stood before the Sanhedrin in Acts 4 and declared that he would never stop preaching. When God gives you a second chance, He also gives you the “boldness” you lacked the first time.

IV. WHY OPPORTUNITIES LEAK: THE NECESSITY OF MERCY

Why do we lose opportunities in the first place?

• Carelessness: Like the five foolish virgins who weren’t ready when the groom arrived.

• Fear: Like the ten spies who saw giants and lost their chance to enter the Promised Land.

• Sin: Like Samson, who lost his eyes and his strength due to compromise.

However, the common denominator for restoration is Mercy. The “Amazing Grace” we sing about in our hymn today is the “sweet sound” that bridges the gap between our failure and God’s faithfulness. If you have lost a valuable opportunity—be it a marriage, a business deal, or a spiritual mantle—the first step is not to “try harder,” but to ask for Mercy.

V. COMPREHENSIVE Q&A: NAVIGATING THE SECOND CHANCE

Q1: Is there any opportunity that is ‘too old’ to be reversed?

Answer: No. In Joel 2:25, God promises to restore the years—not just the days—that the locusts have eaten. Whether the opportunity was lost last week or twenty years ago, the God of the Reversal can create a “new” door that leads to the same “old” destination.

Q2: Does ‘Reversing an Opportunity’ mean I will get exactly the same thing back?

Answer: Sometimes God gives you the exact thing (like my scholarship), and sometimes He gives you something better that fulfills the same purpose. Peter lost the opportunity to walk with Jesus in the flesh, but he gained the opportunity to walk with the Holy Spirit in power.

Q3: What if I lost an opportunity because of someone else’s malice?

Answer: Even better! When men try to block your sun, God uses their “blocking” as a shadow to hide you until it is time for your manifestation. The games master in my story was the “key” God used to bypass the administrative silence. God will use a human “coincidence” to correct a human “malice.”

VI. THE 2026 PROPHETIC PERSPECTIVE

As we navigate 2026, many are lamenting over lost years due to global shifts and personal setbacks. But I hear the Lord saying, “I am the Master of the Second Chance.” Do not write yourself off. Do not settle for “fishing” in the ponds of your past when God has “oceans” of influence for your future. This is the month of recovered mantles and restored mandates.

VII. REFLECTION & PROPHETIC ALIGNMENT

THOUGHT TO PONDER:

If Peter could be restored after a public denial, and a games master could “happen” to find a lost scholarship, why am I still mourning over my yesterday?

PROPHETIC DECREE FOR APRIL 13, 2026:

I decree today that the “Wind of Remembrance” is blowing in your direction! Every file containing your name that has been buried under “administrative silence” or “human forgetfulness” is being moved to the top of the pile right now! I command a “Divine Meeting” on your behalf this week—you will bump into the person who holds the key to your restoration! Every spiritual opportunity you lost through fear or sin is hereby restored as you cry out for mercy. Your “backdated” blessings are being released in Jesus’ Name!

PRAYER:

Father, I thank You because You are the God of the second chance. Lord, I ask for Your mercy today. Forgive my past carelessness and fear. Father, please arise and reverse every good opportunity I have lost. Let my “games master” locate me. Let my “beach-side restoration” happen. Turn my captivity and gather my scattered blessings today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
