THE ETHICS OF THE KINGDOM: 2026 SERIES
SHOWING MERCY TO YOUR HATERS: THE ELISHA STRATEGY

KEY VERSE: “And he answered, Thou shalt not smite them: wouldest thou smite those whom thou hast taken captive with thy sword and with thy bow? Set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink, and go to their master.” — (2 KINGS 6:22)
I. THE UNASKED GUEST: UNDERSTANDING THE ANATOMY OF HATRED
As we navigate this first Saturday of March 2026, we must address one of the most difficult pills for the believer to swallow: The Reality of Enemies. There is an old saying that in life, we choose our friends, but our enemies choose us. You can be the most peaceful, loving, and supportive person, yet find yourself the target of someone’s venom.
Many believers waste precious spiritual energy wondering, “Why do they hate me? What did I do wrong?” Often, the answer is “Nothing.”
Envy: They hate the grace you carry.
Ignorance: They hate the God you represent.
The “Dead Dog” Principle: Remember, no one kicks a dead dog. If you are being targeted, it is often a sign that you are alive, moving, and doing something right. Hatred is frequently the world’s involuntary tribute to your progress.
II. THE SAMARIA AMBUSH: WHEN GOD DELIVERS THE ENEMY
In our reading from 2 Kings 6, we find the Syrian king frustrated. Every time he planned a secret raid against Israel, the Prophet Elisha—hearing from God in his “bedroom”—divulged the plans to the King of Israel. Incensed, the Syrian king sent a massive army to surround Elisha in Dothan.
When Elisha’s servant saw the horses and chariots, he panicked. But Elisha’s perspective was different. He prayed, and the Syrian army was struck with supernatural blindness. In an ironic twist of fate, the very people who came to capture the prophet ended up being led by him, hand-in-hand, straight into the heart of their enemy’s capital, Samaria.
The Moment of Choice:
When their eyes were opened, they found themselves surrounded by the elite guard of Israel. King Joram was ecstatic. He asked Elisha twice, “Shall I smite them? Shall I smite them?” This is the human reaction—when we finally get the upper hand over those who tried to destroy us, we want to “smite.” We want them to feel the pain they intended for us.
III. THE BREAD AND WATER MANDATE: RADICAL MERCY
Elisha’s response was a masterclass in Kingdom ethics. He forbade the King from killing them. Instead, he gave a command that seemed strategically insane: “Set bread and water before them.”
Why Mercy is a Superior Strategy:
It Confuses the Enemy: The Syrians expected a sword; they received a sandwich. This creates a psychological and spiritual shock that disrupts the cycle of violence.
It Validates the Living God: When you show mercy, you prove that you are not driven by the same spirit of malice as the world. You show that your God is the source of your security, so you don’t need to kill to stay safe.
The Result of Restoration: The Bible says the bands of Syria came no more into the land of Israel for a long time. Mercy achieved what a massacre could not. It brought a season of peace because the enemy recognized that God was with Israel.
IV. COMPREHENSIVE Q&A: NAVIGATING MERCY IN 2026
Q1: Is showing mercy a sign of weakness?
Answer: Absolutely not. It takes zero strength to react in anger; that is a reflex. It takes immense spiritual “muscle” to restrain your hand when you have the power to take revenge. Mercy is the highest expression of spiritual authority.
Q2: Does “feeding my hater” mean I should let them stay in my inner circle?
Answer: Elisha fed them and then “let them go.” Mercy does not require you to remain a victim of their presence. You can forgive them, wish them well, and even meet a physical need, while still maintaining healthy boundaries. You are called to be a light, not a doormat.
Q3: What if they don’t change after I show them mercy?
Answer: Your obedience is to God, not to the potential reaction of the hater. Whether they change or not, you have changed. By refusing to repay evil with evil, you ensure that the enemy’s poison does not enter your own spirit.
V. REFLECTION & PRAYER SUITE
MEDITATION: How often have you reached for your “sword” (your tongue, your social media, your influence) to strike back? What would happen if you reached for “bread and water” instead?
PROPHETIC WORD FOR TODAY:
I decree that in this month of March, the Lord will grant you a “Samaria Victory”! Your enemies shall be delivered into your hands, not for their destruction, but for the display of God’s glory through you. You shall not become like those who hate you. The peace of God, which passes all understanding, shall keep your heart and mind!
PRAYER POINTS:
The Grace for Restraint: Merciful Father, I ask for the grace to stay my hand and my tongue. Help me to resist the urge to ‘smite’ those who have caused me pain.
Spiritual Vision: Lord, like Elisha, open my eyes to see that those who are with me are more than those who are with them. Help me to operate from a position of security, not fear.
The Gift of Forgiveness: Father, I release [Name] today. I set bread and water before them in my heart. I forgive the hurt and I let them go into Your hands.
Territorial Peace: Lord, let my acts of mercy bring a ‘cessation of raids’ in my life. Let the presence of God in me be so evident that my enemies recognize Your hand and turn away.
Focus on the Path: Heavenly Father, keep me on the narrow path of salvation. Help me to worry less about why I am hated and more about whether I am reflecting Your love.
