THE FIRST AND GREAT COMMANDMENT: THE VERTICAL FOUNDATION OF FAITH

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: 2 CORINTHIANS 1–4

FIRE SCRIPTURE: MATTHEW 22:34–40

MEMORY VERSE: “On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.” (MATTHEW 22:40)

I. THE DIVINE CONSTITUTION: DEFINING THE COMMANDMENT

As we enter the first day of March 2026, we find ourselves at the center of a theological crossroad. In a world that often views “commandments” as restrictive shackles or outdated religious relics, the Word of God presents them as divine guardrails. Commandments are not mere suggestions; they are the architectural blueprints for a successful human life. They guide our interactions, set the boundaries for our spiritual health, and define the terms of our intimacy with the Creator.

When a lawyer among the Pharisees asked Jesus, “Master, which is the great commandment in the law?”, he was looking for a technical debate. But Jesus provided a spiritual revolution. He pointed to Deuteronomy 6:5 and declared that loving God is the “First and Great” commandment.

Why is this commandment “Great”?

Priority of Origin: God is Love. He is the source. You cannot truly possess the “fruit” of love if you are not connected to the “Root.”

The Unique Status of Humanity: Among all creations—from the galaxies to the biological wonders of the earth—God singled out humanity to receive a unique, undying love. In response, He requires a unique, undying devotion.

The Compass for Life: Loving God isn’t an emotion; it is a direction. It provides the “True North” for every decision you will make in this new month of March.

II. THE TOTALITY OF DEVOTION: HEART, SOUL, AND MIND

Jesus did not say to love God “frequently” or “moderately.” He used three specific faculties to describe the Totality of Surrender.

1. Loving with the HEART (The Seat of Affection):

This is the emotional and volitional center. To love God with the heart means He is your supreme treasure. It means when the world offers competing “lovers”—wealth, fame, or self-indulgence—your heart remains anchored in Him.

2. Loving with the SOUL (The Seat of Existence):

The soul refers to your very life-breath and personality. To love God with the soul means your identity is found in Him. In the pressures of 2026, where the world tries to define you by your career or social status, the soul that loves God finds its definition in being a child of the King.

3. Loving with the MIND (The Seat of Intellect):

God expects us to engage our brains in our worship. Loving God with the mind means filtering your thoughts through His Word, studying the Scriptures intentionally, and exalting His wisdom above the “humanistic” philosophies of the present age.

The Result of Supreme Love:

When these three are aligned, obedience becomes natural rather than forced. You will live righteously in this present evil world not because you have to, but because you want to. You cannot love the Master and simultaneously love what grieves Him.

III. THE HORIZONTAL REFLECTION: LOVING YOUR NEIGHBOR

Jesus followed the “First” commandment with a “Second” that is like it: “Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.”

The Law of Kingdom Gravity:

Jesus stated that on these two commandments “hang” all the law and the prophets. Imagine the entire Bible as a heavy door; Love for God and Love for Man are the two hinges. If the hinges break, the door falls.

The Proof of Life: Loving your neighbor is the evidence that the “seed of love” deposited in you at salvation is actually growing.

The Mirror of the Vertical: You cannot claim to love a God you haven’t seen if you hate the brother you see every day (1 John 4:20).

The Self-Love Standard: God uses your natural instinct for self-preservation and care as the benchmark for how you should treat others.

IV. COMPREHENSIVE Q&A: NAVIGATING THE COMMANDMENT IN 2026

Q1: How can I “command” myself to love? Isn’t love a feeling?

Answer: In the biblical sense, love is a choice and a commitment. It is the deliberate act of exalting God’s will above your own. Feelings often follow obedience, but they should not lead it.

Q2: What prevents us from loving God supremely today?

Answer: The primary competitor is Idolatry—anything that takes the “percentage” of love that belongs to God. In 2026, idols are rarely statues; they are often screens, schedules, and “self-actualization” goals that push God to the periphery.

Q3: Is it possible to love others without first loving God?

Answer: You can be “kind” or “philanthropic,” but you cannot manifest Agape (divine love) without the Divine Source. Human love is conditional; God’s love in us is unconditional. We love because He first loved us.

V. REFLECTION & PRAYER SUITE

QUOTE: Place Him above everything else.

CHALLENGE: If your love was a bank account, what percentage of your “deposits” (time, thoughts, and money) belongs to God? Is He getting the “leftovers” or the “first fruits”?

PROPHETIC WORD FOR MARCH:

I decree that in this month of March, your heart shall become a furnace of divine love! Every “coldness” and “spiritual lukewarmness” is burned away now in Jesus’ name! You shall walk in such intimacy with the Father that your presence will bring peace to your neighbors and terror to the kingdom of darkness!

PRAYER POINTS:

The Vertical Alignment (Morning):

1: Enthroning Christ: Lord, I crown You as the King of my heart today. Take Your place above my career, my family, and my ambitions.

2: Cleansing the Temple: Father, surrender my heart to Your cleansing power. Wash away every “idol” and “impure affection” that competes with You.

3: Mind Renewal: Lord, help me to love You with my mind. Grant me the discipline to study Your Word and think Your thoughts in this new month.

The Horizontal Alignment (Evening):

4: Seed of Love: Father, let the seed of love You planted in me at salvation blossom. Help me to see my neighbors through Your eyes.

5: Grace to Forgive: Lord, give me the strength to love even the “unlovable” neighbors, reflecting Your grace toward me.

6: Deliberate Obedience: I receive the grace to be a “Doer” of the Word and not a “Hearer” only. Let my life be a living testimony of the First Commandment.

7: March Victory: I declare that because I love God supremely, I am more than a conqueror in all the challenges of this month! Amen.

FINAL THOUGHT: When God is in His rightful place, everything else in your life will eventually find its rightful place.
