BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: MATTHEW 27:45-66; LEVITICUS 1-3

MEMORY VERSE: “But he shall acknowledge the son of the hated for the firstborn, by giving him a double portion of all that he hath: for he is the beginning of his strength; the right of the firstborn is his.” (DEUTERONOMY 21:17)

I. THE MATHEMATICS OF THE INHERITANCE

In the legal and spiritual framework of the Old Testament, the “Double Portion” was not a vague concept of “more,” but a specific, calculated law of inheritance. Many people today operate under a misunderstanding, thinking that a “double portion” means receiving twice the volume of everything a father possesses. If a father had six sons, a double portion would not mean he needed to have twelve portions’ worth of wealth.

The Calculation of Heirship:

According to the Jurisprudence of Israel, if a man had six sons, the inheritance was divided into n+1 parts (where n is the number of sons). In this case, the estate would be divided into seven equal portions. Each son would receive one portion, but the firstborn—the one recognized as the “beginning of the father’s strength”—would receive two of those portions (the one assigned to him plus the extra seventh portion).

This “extra” portion was the Right of the Firstborn. It was a mark of leadership, a symbol of heirship, and the legal recognition that this son was now the head of the family, authorized to carry the father’s name, authority, and responsibility.

II. THE TRANSFER OF THE BIRTHRIGHT: REUBEN TO JOSEPH

The principle of the double portion is further illuminated in the history of the Patriarchs. Reuben was Jacob’s firstborn and was entitled to this legal double portion. However, due to his transgression (Genesis 35:22, 1 Chronicles 5:1), he lost his birthright.

The Bible records that the inheritance was transferred to Joseph. How was this “Double Portion” manifested in Joseph? It was manifested through his two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh. When Jacob blessed them, he adopted them as his own, effectively giving Joseph two tribes in Israel instead of one. This is why, in the census of the tribes of Israel, Joseph is represented twice. This wasn’t about “double power”; it was about status and territory as the recognized heir.

III. ELISHA’S REQUEST: THE PROPHETIC SUCCESSION

When we read the account of Elisha and Elijah in 2 Kings 2:9, many assume Elisha was asking for “twice as much power” as Elijah. This creates a theological problem: How do you measure the “volume” of anointing? Is there a “double” Holy Spirit? No.

Elisha was a student in the school of the prophets. When he said, “I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me,” he was using the legal language of Deuteronomy 21:17. He was asking to be recognized as Elijah’s Firstborn Son and Legal Successor. He was asking for the office, the authority, and the leadership position that Elijah held.

The Proof of the Mantle:

When the mantle fell and Elisha struck the Jordan, the miracle was a sign that the Spirit of Elijah (the prophetic office and authority) now rested on Elisha. The “sons of the prophets” didn’t say Elisha had “double power”; they said, “The spirit of Elijah doth rest on Elisha” (2 Kings 2:15). He had inherited the same authority to continue the work.

IV. THE NEW CREATION AND THE FULLNESS OF THE SPIRIT

This brings us to a vital truth for the New Creation. In the New Testament, we do not need to pray for a “double portion” of the Holy Spirit. Why? Because you cannot have the Holy Spirit “in portions.

Spirit Without Measure (John 3:34): The Bible says God gives not the Spirit by measure. When you received the Holy Spirit, you didn’t receive a “portion” or a “fraction” of Him. You received the Person of the Holy Spirit in His fullness.

The Fullness of God (Ephesians 3:19): We are called to be filled with all the fullness of God. You have the same Holy Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead dwelling in you. You have the same Spirit that was upon Jesus.

Grace for Grace (John 1:16): Out of His fullness, we have all received grace upon grace.

The “Double Portion” for us is our recognition as Heirs of God and Joint-Heirs with Christ. We have inherited the name of Jesus, the authority of Jesus, and the Spirit of Jesus. You don’t need “more” of the Spirit; you need more understanding of the Spirit you already have!

V. COMPREHENSIVE Q&A: WALKING IN THE HEIRSHIP

Q1: If I have the fullness of the Spirit, why do I sometimes feel “powerless”?

Answer: Power in the Kingdom is not a “feeling”; it is an Authority. A policeman doesn’t need to “feel” strong to stop a truck; he simply uses his authority. You feel powerless because of a lack of knowledge (Hosea 4:6). As you meditate on your inheritance in Christ, you begin to function in the power that is already resident in you.

Q2: Should we stop using the term ‘Double Portion’ in our prayers?

Answer: We should use biblical terminology with biblical understanding. If you are praying for “double portion” because you think God is holding back half of His Spirit, that is unbelief. If you are acknowledging your status as a firstborn son in Christ, inheriting the authority of the Father, then you are aligned with truth.

Q3: How do I practically exercise this ‘Firstborn’ authority?

Answer: By your words. Elisha spoke to the Jordan. You speak to your circumstances. You function in the wisdom and truth of the Word, knowing that you are the heir recognized by Heaven to carry on the Father’s work on earth.

VI. CONFESSION & FURTHER STUDY

PRAYER / CONFESSION:

Dear Father, thank You for granting me understanding through Your Word. I am not a beggar; I am an heir! I acknowledge my position as a firstborn in the Kingdom of Light. I walk in the knowledge of my inheritance in Christ, exercising authority and dominion over circumstances. I have received of His fullness, and I function today in the highest level of wisdom and truth. The Spirit that rests upon me is the Spirit of Victory, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
