Today’s Open Heavens reflection delves into the profound truth of our heavenly identity as believers. It reminds us that we are not merely earthly creatures, but partakers of the divine nature, citizens of heaven, and ambassadors of the Kingdom of God.

The Earthly vs. The Heavenly: A Defining Contrast

Subject to the consequences of sin: Without Christ, they remain under the penalty of sin, separated from God and destined for eternal judgment. This doesn’t negate their inherent value or dignity, but highlights their spiritual need for redemption. The Heavenly:

Citizens of the Kingdom of God: They have been transferred from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of God’s dear Son (Colossians 1:13). They are now citizens of heaven, with a heavenly perspective and a divine inheritance. But our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,” (Philippians 3:20)

Living a Heavenly Life: More Than Just Thinking About Heaven

Operating by His principles: This involves applying God’s wisdom and truth to every area of our lives. It means conducting ourselves with integrity, honesty, and compassion, treating others with respect and dignity, and striving for excellence in all that we do. Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.'” (Hebrews 13:5)

Thinking His thoughts: This involves cultivating a mindset that is focused on God’s perspective and priorities. It means renewing our minds with the truth of God’s Word, meditating on His promises, and allowing His Spirit to transform our thinking.

Bearing the Image of Christ: A Radical Transformation

Partakers of the Divine Nature: Through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, we receive a measure of God’s own character. We begin to exhibit qualities such as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. But as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, ‘You shall be holy, for I am holy.'” (1 Peter 1:15-16)

Embracing a New Identity: We embrace a new identity as children of God, heirs of God, and joint heirs with Christ. This new identity empowers us to live a life of purpose, significance, and victory. Renew our minds: Cultivate a mindset that is aligned with God’s Word and His will. Fill our minds with godly thoughts, listen to uplifting music, and surround ourselves with positive influences.

Engage in Kingdom work: Use our gifts and talents to serve God and others. Participate in acts of service, share the Gospel with others, and be a light to the world. As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” (1 Peter 4:10)

Cultivate a life of prayer: Maintain consistent communication with God through prayer. Seek His guidance, express our gratitude, and intercede for the needs of others.

Pray without ceasing.” (1 Thessalonians 5:17)

Embrace a life of worship: Express our love and adoration for God through worship, both in corporate settings and in our personal devotions. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with gratitude in your hearts to God.” (Colossians 3:16)

Overcoming Obstacles to Heavenly-Mindedness

The influence of sin: Sin within us can manifest as pride, lust, anger, greed, and other negative emotions. These can hinder our ability to live a life that is pleasing to God.

Discouragement and discouragement: We may face setbacks, disappointments, and challenges that can discourage us and cause us to doubt God’s goodness and faithfulness.

Strategies for Overcoming These Challenges:

Diligently guard your heart: Be mindful of the influences that are shaping your thoughts and actions. Fill your mind with God’s Word, listen to uplifting music, and surround yourself with positive influences. Guard your heart above all else, for from it flow the springs of life.” (Proverbs 4:23)

Embrace the discipline of spiritual disciplines: Practice regular prayer, Bible study, and fasting. These disciplines will strengthen your relationship with God and help you resist temptation.

Seek accountability and support: Connect with other believers who can offer encouragement, support, and accountability. Share your struggles and victories with them, and pray for one another. Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.” (1 Thessalonians 5:11)

Persevere in faith: Do not give up when you face challenges. Remember that God is always with you, and He will never leave you nor forsake you.
